These particularities distinguish funiculars from other types of cable railways.

The line connects the Marina Grande on the coast with the Piazza Umberto in the center of the island.
It is 670 meters (2200 feet) long and includes a 68 m ( 223 feet) tunnel and a 50m (160 ft) viaduct ,
climbing a vertical distance of 139m (456 feet)..

Onboard the Island of Capri Funicular Railway, Island of Capri, Campania Region, Italy
The funicular railway takes visitors to the centre of Capri in just 5 minutes, via a panoramic route which cuts through the island's lemon groves and terraced vegetable gardens.
Departures are every 15 minutes or more frequently still when demand is particularly high.
In the rush hour passengers are likely to have to queue before boarding.
Small dogs are allowed in the funicular car, but must be muzzled and kept on a lead. Tickets can be purchased at the funicular railway ticket office in the center of Capri or in Marina Grande, to the left of the port, where the ticket offices for the various hydrofoil and ferry companies are located.

Capri: Live from the Monte Solaro Chair Lift!
The chair lift up to Monte Solaro from Anacapri is an exciting and exhilarating ride - provided the weather is good! There are great views on the way up (and down) and tremendous panoramas of the Faraglioni Rocks and over to the mainland from the restaurant at the top. Ride with Tony and Helen on the descent from the summit...
Well, it's a bit bumpy, but the view's good, and it's certainly airy enough! It's actually very relaxing, sitting here with your feet dangling. It's quite a change, after wandering about so much over the last few days.
Let's see how Helen's doing. (Zooms into a close-up of Helen, who descends out of frame)
The first part going down is quite steep, but then it really evens out. It takes about thirty minutes to come up, and fifteen minutes to come down. I'm not quite clear why there's this difference, maybe I just misread it.
(Pan Pipes sound mysteriously; the chair bumps a little as it runs over the pylon support wheels)
It's a bit lumpy over the pylons, isn't it?
Well, here we are onto the flat bit, as you can see; when you look ahead there, see the streams of people?
Now, as that's the exciting bit over, we'll just - fade to black...

Capri and the chairlift ride
A short boat trip from Sorrento, in Italy, brings you to the small island of Capri. After docking at the marina you can take the funicular railway up to the main town area and enjoy walking through the narrow streets and passageways. A short bus trip from there will take you to Piazza Vittoria, where you can embark on the famous 'Seggiovia di Monte Solaro', or chairlift to the summit of Mount Solaro. At the summit is a large viewing area with restaurant and spectacular views.

Anacapri is truly a majestic part of the island and the views are breathtaking.
Taking a funicular is a great way to get the best of those views.
There are many boat cruises that will take you to the grottos that are brilliant in colour.
In August there are many tourists, so get there early, or stay overnight so you can avoid the crowds.

Monte Solaro Chairlift - Capri Island, Italy
This is the Monte Solaro chairlift (seggiovia) in Anacapri, on the island of Capri in Italy. Monte Solaro is the highest point on the Island of Capri and from the top you get a superb view of the gulf of Naples with Mount Vesuvius in the distance. You also get a great view of the island’s famous ‘Il Faraglioni’ rock formation. The chairlift costs 10 euro for a return trip and is worth every penny. Hope you enjoy the ride !

Capri is a small Italian island in the Bay of Naples, about 5 kilometers from the mainland.
We visited on a day trip in April, arriving via a fast jet ferry from Sorrento and avoiding the peak summer season, when the island can be overrun with tourists.
Capri is also easy to reach by ferry from Naples.
We arrived at Capri’s main port, Marina Grande, which is on the north coast.
From here you can take boat trips, for example to the Blue Grotto, which is a flooded sea-cave, or you can take a boat to the south coast to see the Faraglioni Rocks.
However, with limited time we decided to make for Capri town, then on to to Anacapri and Monte Solaro.
To get from Marina Grande up to Capri town we took the funicular railway which connects the harbour to the Piazzetta, the town’s main square.
Capri’s two main centres, Capri town and its uphill rival Anacapri, are almost entirely given over to tourism and prices can be high.
Capri is a world-famous beauty spot and it’s also a summer favourite of holidaying VIPs.
The Piazzetta is full of fashionable bars and it’s well worth stopping for an espresso. You might even see one of those VIPs!
The square is dominated by a free-standing clock tower.

Capri is well known for its maiolica tiles.
Here they can be seen forming a map of the island.
We boarded a crowded bus to Anacapri and explored the island’s second town.
Walking along Via Giuseppe Orlandi, we saw the Casa Rossa, a brightly coloured house built in the late 1800s by an American colonel. It’s now a museum.
Continuing along this road, we reached Piazza San Nicola and the Church of San Michele, built in Italian baroque style at the turn of the 18th century.
Built on an octagonal Greek cross plan, the church is famous for its maiolica floor decoration depicting the expulsion of Adam and Eve. It was completed in 1761.
For an impressive view of the entire floor, you can climb the spiral staircase to the organ loft and look out over the church from above.
More maiolica tiles can be seen nearby, decorating the benches in Piazza Armando Diaz.
The Monte Solaro chairlift is also in Anacapri, and it reaches the top of the 589 meters high mountain within minutes.
From the summit there are picturesque views over the island and across the Bay of Naples and the Gulf of Salerno.
There’s also a great view of the Faraglioni Rocks from here.
These three spurs of rock rise from the sea within meters of the coast and are one of the favourite destinations for boat tours of the island’s coast.
We hiked down from the summit back to Anacapri. The path is quite uneven in places but the walk is well worth it for the changing panoramas.
On the way down, you can see a series of small bronze plaques. Each represents a stop on the Via Crucis, or Way of the Cross.
We headed back to Marina Grande and caught the last ferry back to Sorrento, which left late afternoon.
You can see plenty of this beautiful island in a few hours, but don’t expect to fit everything in.

Travel Guide - Capri Italy - Chair Lift to top of Monte Solaro - Isle of Capri
When traveling to southern Italy, one must see is the Island of Capri, a simple 40 minute boat ride from Naples Italy, or Napoli. We hope to show you a quick look at what to expect during your travels. 1. Fly to Naples Italy 2. Take a taxi to the Porto, but negotiate the rate first or make sure the cab driver doesn't hide the meter, Say turn on the meter. 3. Once at the port purchase a ticket from SNAV to Capri. It can be hard to find but look for Capri on the ticket window then the word SNAV. 4. Once in Capri, give your bags to the Porter and tell them what hotel you are at. 5. We recommend La Minerva hotel, small, quite and ridiculously good customer service from Antonia, Luigi, and Marco. 6. Then Go the the arch that says Funiculare... that's the cable car up to the Square. 7. Once in the Capri square, walk out of the Funiculare and up the stairs to the main square and go RIGHT, towards the ticket booth labeled Anacapri. Buy a ticket for the bus which will take you to up to Anacapri... note, if you don't like heights, sit down on the bus and don't look out the Right side of the bus, it's a crazy high cliff and the bus is a bit precarious. 8. Once in Anacapri the bus will drop you at the main area then to get to the Chair lift to the top, look for or ask for the seggiovia... then buy a ticket, only a couple Euro. Then that will take you all the way to the top. FYI, bring a jacket in case you hit clouds on the way up, it can get very chilly! But it's awesome. The view of all of Anacapri and Capri can be seen from up on top of Monte Solaro.

Capri is an Italian island in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the Sorrentine Peninsula, on the south side of the Gulf of Naples, in the Campania region of Southern Italy. It has been a resort since the time of the Roman Republic.
Features of the island are the Marina Piccola (the little harbour), the Belvedere of Tragara, which is a high panoramic promenade lined with villas, the limestone crags called sea stacks that project above the sea (the Faraglioni), Anacapri, the Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra), and the ruins of the Imperial Roman villas.
Capri is part of the region of Campania, Province of Naples. The town of Capri is the main centre of population on the island. It has two harbours, Marina Piccola and Marina Grande (the main port of the island). The separate comune of Anacapri is located high on the hills to the west.
Capri is a tourist destination for both Italians and foreigners. In the 1950s, Capri became a popular destination. In summer, the island is heavily visited by tourists, especially by day trippers from Naples and Sorrento.
Capri is served by ferry or hydrofoil from Naples, Sorrento, Positano or Amalfi as well as by boat services from the ports of the Bay of Naples and the Sorrentine Peninsula. Naples is served by two ports, Mergellina and Molo Beverello. Molo Beverello has a higher frequency of departures and a larger selection of boats than Mergellina.
From Naples, the ferry takes 80 minutes, and the hydrofoil 40 minutes. From Sorrento, the ferry takes about 40 minutes while the hydrofoil takes about 20 minutes.
Boats call at Marina Grande, from where a funicular goes up to Capri town. From Anacapri town, a chair lift takes passengers to the top of the island.
