Brunello Di Montalcino 2010 La Lecciaia
Each of the last several vintages have been outstanding and because of the remarkable value, quickly became far and away favorites with Wine Express customers. This latest release from the the superb 2010 vintage is another winner. It received 91 points from the Wine Advocate, 92 points from James Suckling and 94 from Antonio Galloni who said La Lecciaia's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is beautifully layered in the glass, with gorgeous intrigue, depth and personality all on full display. There is a sense of translucent finesse in the 2010 that is impossible to miss. Sweet red cherry, stone fruit, mint and wild flowers all grace the exquisite finish. What a pretty wine this is.

He was one of the wine producers
He started working on the vineyards when he was 6.
He died this year...2 months ago
at the age of 96
I don't know how many people can have the privelage to say their life has been based off of 90 years of experience in the same place
and that's why I say I had a great professor in my life.
He bought this property in 1955
After the end of the sharecropping...he was a sharecropper as usual in that time
With little money he was able to buy this small property here in Montosoli
and he didn't buy this property casually
and actually in the 50s, this was one of the most famous places for Montalcino
and we can say we have had wine production in this area since the middle ages
so since the 14th century
so the wine we can say has been produced here for 700 years
My grandfather can say he was the first one here making wine from this cru
2 years ago we celebrated our 50th anniversary
sorry...60th...of our family here in this hill
but our family takes its roots here in Montalcino for centuries and centuries
We are one of the most historical family of wine production in Montalcino
and one of the few still remaining
so me as the grandson of the first member of the association of wine producers
this is not just a job
we can tell the stories of our family through our bottles, though our job
making wine here is much more than a job or doing business
making wine here is a family thing
Montalcino wouldn't have been famous for wine, but he would still produce wine even if it wasn't famous
even without anybody, for sure Banfi, Biondi Santi, and other families and other companies
gave a great help to the Montalcino community
Brunello di Montalcino represents, for many aspects, something like a miracle
because the main economy until the 50s was sharecropping
sharecropping was a middle age economy
we're speaking of 70 years ago, not 700, so this is quite unbelievable
and Brunello di Montalcino was able to let the poor class and the noble class sit at the same table
the same people that were fighting together 20 years before
were sitting at the same table, speaking about the same things
everybody at the same level, so this was the first miracle of Montalcino, the social miracle.
and then the economical miracle, because 50-60 year ago
Montalcino was the poorest village of Tuscany
After WWII, that was a village that was going to die
because the population of Montalcino was less than 2,000
and if it wasn't for my grandfather and the other 25 heroes
in an era when everyone was moving from the country to work in the big cities
so if it wasn't for these 26 heroes, everybody you see here wouldn't have happened probably.
Now probably, Montalcino is probably the richest village of Italy
Now it is cool to say you are a Brunello di Montalcino producer
now big brands buy and bought properties in Montalcino
That's the small difference between some producers and some other producers
our family knew what living in Montalcino was like 70 years ago
That's why I tell you that we don't just produce wine because Brunello is just business
we just do this because it is a sort of deep pride that we want to carry on
and we want to value my grandfather's life
He spent all his life for the Montalcino community
So probably, if now Brunello is with Barolo as the most powerful wine denomination in the world
it is thanks to these people
The success of Montalcino was from these simple people
and everybody must not forget that.

2014 Baricci Brunello Di Montalcino
Baricci is a third generation Winery started in 1968 with their first bottling of Rosso di Montalcino. 1971 was their first vintage of Brunello di Montalcino and since then, they have been recognized as one of the top estate-owned producers in the appellation. Their entire vineyard is only 12 Hectares with 5 of them designated as Brunello. They follow all the traditional wine methods which includes the aging qualifications. They keep their Brunello 3 years in barrel and 8 months in bottle before any kind of commercial release. While they bottle 13,000 to 18,000 bottles per vintage, this is one of the rarest Brunellos imported into US.
The wine itself is full-bodied with black cherry, blackberry and vanilla on the palate. The sharp tannins and high acidity keeps the wine in check and allows it to be food friendly. Pairs best with red meat and fuller fish dishes. Let this wine breathe a little to allow all the aromas to open up and show off how good this wine really is. Don't be afraid to lay a couple bottles down. The best Brunello offers are some of the most age worthy wines in all of Italy!
One of the most common questions get is, What's the difference between Brunello and Sangiovese?
Brunello and Sangiovese are synonyms, they mean the same thing. Brunello though is from Montalcino and is considered the highest standard when it comes to Sangiovese. Brunello di Montalcino must be made of 100% Sangiovese grown and produced within the Montalcino appellation. On top of the quality control of the grapes, the wines themselves must spend a minimum of 2 years in barrel and 4 months in oak. The producers can age them longer if they would like, that is up to their opinion of when the wines are ready. When a wine doesn't meet those requirements, that is when you see labels with Rosso di Montalcino on them, telling you that this is a younger, more approachable style wine from this region.

Marchesi de Frescobaldi - CastelGiocondo 2010 - Brunello Di Montalcino tasted 100% blind by the Best Sommelier of the World, Andreas Larsson.
The colour is showing some age. It is getting lighter. The rim is more orange, but the core is still medium intense ruby-red. Very fine nose. It is also showing some evolution, but there is still a lot of primary fruit in there. Very elegant red fruit such as raspberry, cherry, sweet berries, fine layers of spice, with a hint of tobacco. A slight hint of oak, but very discreet. Again it is starting to develop more complexity so it is all integrating here. Very good density on the palate. It has a lot of weight. It is a quite broad and lush with layers of that beautiful spicy sweet fruit. However the texture is very polished so it is really subtle on the palate now, with plenty of juiciness, good richness of fruit. With a well-preserved acidity and a very long lingering finish. Very fine drinkability today. Still a wine with a lot of extract. Showing preferably with an enormous piece of juicy steak. However, it will continue to develop more complexity and harmony over the coming years.
