The old saying It's better to be lucky than good applies with this story. Reporter Sarah Cody and I drove up to Gloucester, Mass to spend an afternoon on a whale watching boat. We had done a similar story 6 years ago out of Boston and it was frustrating, because all we saw were a couple of Minke whales and they are not the most majestic mammals in the water.
The naturalist on the boat was fantastic and I was able to mic him up and he gave great information in nice short sound bites that I was able to sprinkle in throughout the piece. After an hour we saw our first whale, a humpback, and it was great. It gave us a couple of bursts of air thru its blowhole and beautiful shots of it's tail. While this was going on, I was able to listen in on a conversation between the Captain and the naturalist and was able to record great reaction of their discovery. A pod of North Atlantic dolphins were in site, and we quickly sped over. Theses whales were amazing as they surrounded the boat, and used the wake to perform amazing tricks.
We finished our trip with another humpback whale, knowing we had enough video and still images for a lengthy news story for not only our television station, but also the newspaper.
The editing of the story was enjoyable and we decided to use Bruce Hornsby as a music bed. Not a personal favorite of mine, but the piano and the feel allowed for our video to breathe.

Whale Watching June 20, 2014
We took a trip up to Gloucester (or Glasta as the locals say) to go on a whale watching tour. The tour took us about 20 miles east of Cape Ann, Mass. to the Stellwagen Bank. Once we arrived at the bank the Humpback Whales were everywhere! We saw at least 20 different whales according to our tour guides. We also saw nearly every single type of surface behavior these whales exhibit including bubble netting, dragging, pectoral slapping, tail slapping, breaching, and many others.

Lyrics:
Well I'm on the Downeaster Alexa
And I'm cruising through Block Island Sound
I have charted a course to the Vineyard
But tonight I am Nantucket bound
We took on diesel back in Montauk yesterday
And left this morning from the bell in Gardiner's Bay
Like all the locals here I've had to sell my home
Too proud to leave I've worked my fingers to the bone
So I could own my Downeaster Alexa
And I go where the ocean is deep
There are giants out there in the canyons
And a good captain can't fall asleep

March 23, 2015 New England Fishing Report with Toby Lapinski
The April issue of The Fisherman Magazine is due out this week and our annual spring fishing kick-off issue is sure to get you [pumped for the open-water season! We tackle such favorite spring fishing topics as winter flounder tricks, a look at the top spring trout baits and lures, bucktailing for fluke, where to find the first run of fresh striped bass in each region and much, much more.
The ongoing baitfish spotlight series from Mike Laptew also continues this month and we take a look at the foursome of silversides, grass shrimp, mumichogs and green crabs. As always, this print feature includes a special subscriber-only video companion available at TheFisherman.com.
Lastly I would like to pass along word of an event that I am deeply involved in that is set to take place on Tuesday night, March 24. Back on February 25 we lost good friend and fisherman, Anton “Tony” Stetzko. Tony is the co-holder of the Massachusetts state record striped bass, a 73-pound fish landed off Nauset Beach back in 1981. Tony left behind his young son, Anton III, and we are hosting a fundraising event in Madison, CT to raise funds for a college fund for Anton. Complete details of the event can be found on the Events Calendar of TheFisherman.com. This event is open to the public and I hope to see you all there.
Connecticut
• The big news is of the slow-to-get-going holdover striped bass action in the lower tidal rivers across the state. Even though there was one last sign of winter last week when 3 – 4 inches of snow fell across the state, anglers have been finding more and more active striped bass on the warmer days and nights. Blackfish and winter flounder seasons open on April 1 and anglers have been eagerly gearing up for these spring favorites as well.
Rhode Island
• It was another week of the cod boats being forced to stay back at the dock last week as the weather simply would not allow for anyone to head out to Block Island and the surrounding waters. Most of the shops we spoke to this week were busy preparing for opening day of trout season on the 11th as well as stocking the shelves with new gear for the upcoming open-water season.
Massachusetts
• Ice fishing is still the big word in Massachusetts on the mainland as well as on the Cape. While open water is starting to pop up on the larger lakes on the Cape, some of the smaller spots still have upwards of 9 inches of solid ice on them. There was a noticeable increase in salty talk in this week’s reports with a buzz of spring stripers and inter flounder hot on the lips of eager anglers. Still no reports of either species being landed just yet, but it won’t be long before we are back in the swing of things!

Captains Courageous by Rudyard Kipling
Real men don't take guff from snotty kids. Neither does Disko Troop, skipper of the We're Here, a fishing schooner out of Gloucester, Massachusetts, when his crew fishes Harvey Cheyne out of the Atlantic. There's no place on the Grand Banks for bystanders, so Harvey is press-ganged into service as a replacement for a man lost overboard and drowned. Harvey is heir to a vast fortune, but his rescuers believe none of what he tells them of his background. Disko won't take the boat to port until it is full of fish, so Harvey must settle in for a season at sea. Hard, dangerous work and performing it alongside a grab-bag of characters in close quarters is a life-changing experience.
