Captain Fernando Lagoon Boat Tour, Negombo Sri Lanka
Captain Romesh Fernando gave us a wonderful first hand experience of life in the Negombo Lagoon. An experienced fisherman, we learned about the various techniques for harvesting fish along with information on the birds that work these waterways for their survival.
There's a sense of giving back as well. The captain has been instrumental in starting an initiative to clean up the lagoon. Along with coordinating volunteers for garbage reduction, he is manufacturing cloth bags to help replace the ubiquitous plastic ones that end up in the lagoon.
I highly recommend Captain Fernando if you plan on the Negombo Lagoon tour.
Negombo Lagoon with Captain Fernando Negombo Boat Tour
On this special tour we cruised to the south end of the Negombo Lagoon and into this section of the historic Hamilton Canal that links Negombo to the Kelani River at Colombo. The reflections of the surrounding jungle on the glassy water of the canal was amazing. This 4 hour cruise also took us through the narrow channels of the pristine Muthurajawela Marsh Nature Reserve. A relaxing and beautiful way to spend a day in paradise

Dutch Canal Boat Trip Negombo Sri Lanka
Video of Negombo a small port town north of Colombo. In the eighth and ninth century the Arabs came to the harbour of Negombo for the export of spices. In the colonial period Negombo was a centre for the export of cinnamon. The Portuguese built a fortification and converted many inhabitants to Catholicism. The Dutch conquered the town in the middle of the seventeenth century and expelled the Portuguese. They constructed a network of canals to simplify the transport of spices from the hinterland. At the end of the eighteenth century the British took it from them without a struggle. Nowadays few monuments are silent witness of the colonial period.
The Dutch have constructed a canal at Negombo in northern direction along the coast. The canal was constructed in the seventeenth century for the shipping of spices and other commodities. Nowadays the canal is useless for transport because it was silted up. But the water is still useful for the irrigation of the rice fields along the canal. The fields are part of small villages along the canal. The villagers have built bridges for bikers and pedestrians. Many villagers have a small boat for transport by water. The only sounds during a boat trip on the canal are the splashes of the paddles in the water and the singing of the birds in the trees. These sounds of nature come together with nice views of remote country houses and nature areas with palm trees and banana trees.
