SWEET AMERIKA, written and directed by award winning Vancouver-based journalist R. Paul Dhillon, stars Bollywood icon Gulshan Grover. The hard-hitting film is produced by Vancouver-based businessman and South Asian arts-impresario Bobby Nagra and Dhillon under their MMM Films banner. It will be distributed in theatres, Canada-wide by CSS Releasing!
VANCOUVER -- Canadian writer/director R. Paul Dhillon's debut feature film SWEET AMERIKA will hit theatres in Canada on September 19, 2008. The film, produced by Bobby Nagra and Dhillon under their MMM Films banner, will be released in theatres Canada-wide by CSS Releasing.
Set in New York City, SWEET AMERIKA is the moving story of Sikh shop owner Balbir Bobby Singh (Gulshan Grover), an American Sikh who is kidnapped and tortured by a hateful and misguided gang who seek reprisals following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The film is inspired by true events such as the murder of an Arizona-based Sikh businessman Balbir Singh Sodhi.
Co-writer/director Dhillon deliberately puts the characters and the action on a slippery slope. There are no real heroes here as the world becomes unhinged following these earth-shaking events.
SWEET AMERIKA is a probing portrait of immigrant life in America that follows Bobby on his journey to find and preserve his piece of the American dream in a world where concepts like freedom and democracy seem to stand on shaky ground.
Still mourning the loss of his wife and son, Bobby finds new hope in Mina (Sian Sladen), a young, vibrant Muslim woman. Although opposed by the Sikh community, Bobby's love for Mina holds the key to reviving his broken spirit.
As Bobby is held captive, the days leading up to his abduction flash before us in a richly woven narrative, full of the joys and sorrows of life in America.
Will Bobby survive the night and escape the extremists that now threaten his existence?
A thoughtful, provocative story filled with memorable characters, SWEET AMERIKA is ultimately an uplifting story that asks us to experience the colorful, and sometimes troubled, fabric of America with open minds and hearts.

CBC NEWS - Two Canadian Fathers Fighting Poland to Return Abducted Canadian Children
International Parental Child Abductions from Canada to Poland seems to be shared by two Canadian fathers, Stephen Watkins and Grzegorz Nowacki. Both fathers are fighting in the Polish Courts to have their Canadian children return to their habitual country of Canada where they were born and raised and where they were illegally kidnapped by their non-custodial mothers. Polish Courts do not seem to respect the Hague Convention Treaty for the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction which both countries are signatories. The two men are working together with other Canadian parents who's children have been abducted to introduce a new Canadian law they named Canada's iCHAPEAU Act . The name iCHAPEAU stands for the International Child Harbouring & Abduction Prevention Enforcement Act Under-Law.

CBC NEWS REPORT TRANSCRIPT:
A Newmarket father is on his way to Poland tonight hoping the trip will end a two and a half year legal battle to bring his sons home. Stephen Watkins spoke to CBC news as he boarded a flight to Warsaw tonight. Matt Llewellyn has the story.
This is the last video that Stephen Watkins took of his two sons before they were taken by their mother. In 2009 the boys did not show up to school.
Police say the mother (actually their maternal grandfather and non-custodial mother) drove them into the U.S. where they boarded a plane to Germany. An arrest warrant came too late.
There are all these children being abducted to this country and something seems to be going wrong with the Polish courts. says Stephen Watkins, Father of abducted sons, Alexander and Christopher Watkins
Watkins is relaying on the Hague Convention, an international piece of law set-up to prevent situation like this... but the problem Watkins says the Polish Courts don't see this as an international mater.
We are dealing with an International Law and this is not a custody matter. says Stephen Watkins
He does however have legal custody of his sons here in Canada, claims back up in letters from the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs.
The only one step I did not take is that I did not refuse my sons to see their mum. says Stephen Watkins
But custody conflicts like this one could be more then just a difference in Poland Court system.
This Mississauga father shares an eerily similar story to Watkins and says these types of abductions are a cultural problem.
When the Child is abducted to Poland, basically like the child is coming home, that's how the society looks at abduction says Grzegorz Nowacki, Father of abducted son, Aleksander Nowacki
Realize you can imagine this is taking quite the toll on Stephen Watkins financially as well as emotionally. Financially he has not work since the boys went missing and its cost him around $250K about a quarter of a million dollars. Now he will be back in Warsaw, Poland on Wednesday where he will be appealing to the Polish Courts to let his sons finally come home to Canada with him. Thank you for SHARING this news report so more people are aware of the injustice the Polish Courts are continuing to pursue which are breaking not only multiple treaties between Canada and Poland but also infringing on the Human Rights and the Rights of the Child as outlined in the UNITED NATIONS rights of the Child (CRC) which both Canada and Poland are signatories.
Thank You!
