8 Tips for Landscape Photography in Iceland | Best Travel tips for Iceland
Iceland is a dream destination for most landscape photographers. Together with Andrew Dawes, I share our best tips for improving your landscape photography experience in Iceland, to help you get the most out of your next photography trip.
Check out Andrew's Channel -
We did a video together about taking Drones to Iceland -
1. Know where you are going - It's important to maximise your time while you are there. To do that I recommend a map called International Photographer of Iceland.
2. Work out what the weather is doing - One of the biggest elements that will impact how successful your trip is will be the weather. I used an app called Vedur for iOS.
3. Build flexibility in your plan - Hire a motorhome so you’re not restricted to check in and check out times that could mess with your landscape photography plans.
4. Optimise your shooting time - During summer the days are long and the nights are short and don’t get completely dark. The best time to shoot with the best light was between 10:30pm and 2:00am during which time included the sunset and sunrise.
5. Consider your Lenses - Think about the sorts of landscapes you want to capture. I took my 17-35mm, 24-70mm and 70-200mm lenses. If I could only take 2 lenses, I probably leave the 17-35mm lens home.
6. Avoid crowds - Generally, you’ll encounter fewer people in Iceland during winter, however, the weather is more extreme. During summer when the weather is likely to be more pleasant, many locations can be packed with tourists. Scout your locations out during the day but return at night. Find locations that are off the main ring road.
7. Be prepared for bad weather - During winter the weather in Iceland can get fairly intense, so make sure you’re prepared. Even in summer, it can get very cold, and it important if you are going to spend hours at night shooting that you are warm dry and comfortable, so sure you have gloves, beanies and plenty of layers.
8. Get into the high country with a 4WD - While there are lots of locations in easy reach of the main ring road around Iceland, they will be popular. To make the most of your visit, consider getting access to a 4WD (even for part of your time there) so you can access some of the spectacular and unique locations the high country has to offer.

Best Hotdog in Iceland | Reykjavik | Photo Tour Day 1
The best hotdog in Iceland can be found in Iceland. And, to be sure I ate more than 1.
Check my travel photography from Iceland out on Instagram @brendanvanson
It's day 1 of our photo tour in Iceland, and we are just getting to know everyone and getting started. The trip starts in Reykjavik today, but it's really just a day to meet everyone and get organized. The real photo tour activities start tomorrow as we head up the coast towards Kirkjufellsfoss.
In the vlog, we also tried the best hotdog in Iceland as we wandered around the city.
Reykjavik is one of the coolest cities. I think it's so underrated. So often, people come to Iceland and just leave this city so quickly.
ICELAND Travel and Photography Guide
In this travel and photography guide video, I will show you where and what to see in Iceland. I do so by showing my way to approach different locations in Iceland. I take them one by one in geographical order clockwise around the island. I will stress that this is NOT how you're supposed to do it. This is simply how I would approach Iceland. You are still the sole creator of your tour to Iceland and you have to design your tour with what you want to accomplish in mind.

Landscape Photography in Iceland | Unique Compositions in a Photographer's Dream Location
In this landscape photography vlog, I fulfilled a dream and travel to one of the most photographed countries in the world. Ever since I started my landscape photography journey, I wanted to go visit Iceland to witness first hand the epic landscapes and waterfalls this country has to offer.
I leave the beautiful landscapes of the UK behind, and fly to Reykjavík where I pick up my rental motorhome that will be my accomodation for the week, more about that later. I drive north to Snæfellsjökull, and spend the day visiting the Black Church and bird covered coastlines and exploring amazing waterfalls that are just a short walking distance from parks along the main road.
I arrived at, Kirkjufell Mountain and the gorgeous Kirkjufellsfoss. It was around 8:00pm so there were still plenty of photographers around. I explored the place for a couple of hours as well as the nearby town of Grundarfjörður, until the sun started to set and I had the place to myself.
This is a well photographed location and while it was nice to capture my own image of the iconic shot this place is famous for, I wanted to also find other more unique compositions that showcased this stunning scene. I used the waterfall and river as foreground interest with Kirkjufell Mountain in the background. Increasing my f-stop so I can achieve a slow enough shutter speed to capture the movement of the water. That drama in the foreground providing really interest leading the eye into this dynamic scene.
Before I left, I moved into a position where Kirkjufell Mountain was directly behind the lake. With the wind calming down the lake was very still providing a wonderful mirror effect, catching the reflect of the mountain, the sky and the colour in the clouds.

Bad Weather Photography in Iceland | Iceland Photography Tour Day 6
Bad weather photography was the name of the photo vlog today in Iceland.
Check out my Iceland photography on IG at @brendanvanson.
Bad weather hit us hard last night here in Iceland and it stuck around until the morning. Unfortunately, we were hammered by heavy winds and rain. So, we took a bit of a late start leaving this morning.
Truth is, bad weather photography in Iceland, and basically anywhere, can actually be really cool. Angry clouds, and soft light can actually make for some of the best photography ops there are. So, we headed to a glacier lagoon in Iceland to try to get some shots. And, thankfully, the bad weather kind of let off... for a bit.
Photography in Iceland is funny. One minute it's sunny, and the next minute you're getting crushed by rain and wind. And the glacier, things seems great for a bit - the sun was out, and there was a nice bit of light. Then, out of nowhere, the winds picked up and hit us hard. At one point, they were howling so hard off the glacier that little bits of Ice were being tossed at me.
Half of our Iceland photography workshop group decided to push through the bad weather anyways. We headed to the famous glacier lagoon in Iceland, but again were just pummeled by bad weather. So, we changed plans and headed to Svartifoss.
Svartifoss is a really cool waterfall in Iceland. There are these beautiful rock formations around the waterfall, and it makes for a really good photo location.
The Photography tour group was really happy with the location, and even though the light wasn't perfect, we had fun.
Tomorrow, our photo tour in Iceland continues again as we make another attempt at the Glacier Lagoon.
We're coming up on our last photography vlog episodes from here in Iceland.
Iceland Photography | The Best Camera Gear
Having an awesome camera with all of the gear to go with it has never been so important as it is for your trip to Iceland.
In Iceland, the weather is unpredictable and lighting changes drastically depending on what time of year you are visiting. It’s important to be as prepared as possible.
I always think it’s better to be over prepared when it comes to camera gear. There are so many opportunities to take beautiful photos, make sure you’re prepared for all situations!

So Many Photographers in Iceland! | Kirkjufellsfoss | Photo Tour Day 2
There are so many photographers in Iceland! Day 2 of our photography tour takes us to Kirjufellsfoss.
See my Iceland Photography on Instagram at @brendanvanson.
Kirkjufellsfoss was our photo destination goal on day 2 of our photography tour here in Iceland. But, along the way we wanted to stop at a couple locations along the Icelandic coast. We first stopped at a really cool seascape with a archway. It made for a couple really cool photos. Then, we pushed forward.
Our next photo location in Iceland was another seascape with a beautiful view out to some sea stacks in a national park. Again, the view was amazing. Unfortunately, I managed to drop my brand new filter holder off the cliff. It was likely instantly watching $140 tumble out of my hands and down into the sea.
We got to Kirkjufellsfoss just before sunset, and I was amazed by how many photographers there were.
I mean, there are so many photographers in Iceland to begin with, but this was next level. I was blown away. There must have been about 100 photographers there. Insane. It didn't help that there was an Italian photo tour there along with my photography workshop, but those are the breaks.
Photography in Iceland is one of the most sought after things, so I get it.
Kirkjufellsfoss is also one of the most iconic views of Iceland, so I'm not surprised.
The northern lights also came out in Iceland tonight. It wasn't the most impressive show I've ever seen. But, it was beautiful.
This is the 3rd of my Iceland vlogs. To see more of my Iceland vlogs, check out the playlist.
Tomorrow, we'll be shooting more photography in Iceland as we head towards the big waterfalls.
Landscape Photography in Iceland | Timing the Exposure for a Seascape Image at Vik, Black Beach
In this landscape photography vlog, I drive east of Reykjavik to Vik the South most town of Iceland. I head down to the famous Black Sand Beach and explore the drama coastline for a composition that utilises the contrast of the white breaking waves and the dark black rocks as a leading line
The line of the cliffs served as another line for the viewer that directed their eye to the main focus of the image, the epic rocks off the coast.
The sky was cloudy and the mist started the rollin off the cliffs, this was create a wonderful mood to the image that wanted to capture. I used a 0.9 ND Grad filter to darken down the sky with let men lift the foreground to capture the detail on the black beach.
The photography at Vik was amazing, but I also enjoyed flying the drone over the breaking waves to captures a unique perspective of the landscape.

Iconic Photography Locations in Iceland
There are so many photography locations in Iceland. These are some of the most iconic spots for landscape photography.

It's day 4 of our Iceland photography workshop and things have been going really well. We've already photographed some really beautiful locations in the west of the country. Today, we've moved to the south where there are some of the most iconic photography locations in Iceland.
We started off with Seljalandsfosss which is one of my favourite waterfalls in Iceland for landscape photography. There are some classic images made from this location. But, today I worked to find a new image. I think I was pretty successful.
Then, we headed to Skogafoss and the secret waterfall. Again, I think the whole photography workshop group did really well. And, I even managed to push the shutter on a couple Images.
Finally, we headed to Vik beach which is a beautiful place for sunset. Again, it was the perfect photography location in Iceland to end the day.
Tomorrow, there will be another vlog from Iceland!

Travel Photography in Iceland
To see some of the images from this trip and video, check out this article on the blog:
I finally got the chance to shoot some travel photography in Iceland. It seems like every professional travel photographer on the planet has been there in the past couple years, so it was nice to get some images under my belt there too.
I just had a week to photograph Iceland, which isn't nearly enough time. I think I could have spent a solid month there and still not felt like I had properly covered it. Since it was my first time there, I really tried to just hit up the hotspots and try to find some other cool things in between. It was a bit of a scouting trip for the next time I go.
Now, well photography in Iceland is fairly easy in that there is always an amazing image to capture, it's also extremely challenging at times. The weather changes every five minutes, there are rolling storms and lots of wind; so it makes for a bit of an adventure.
Anyways, I hope you enjoyed the video. I've got a couple more photography videos from Iceland coming in the next little while, so stay tuned, and don't forget to subscribe!

My Bucket List Trip: Photographing Iceland
This trip was a year in the making! I traveled to Iceland in hopes of building my landscape photography skills, and it was an incredible experience!
I’ve always wanted to travel to Iceland, and I specifically wanted to get out and capture as many photos and videos as I could as I toured the country.
For this trip specifically, I set out to build up my landscape photography skills. I’m not a professional landscape photographer (faaaarrrr from it, actually), but the challenge of trying to capture Iceland’s natural beauty seemed like a fun one. I honestly don’t think there are any photos or videos that can truly share the scale and scope of Iceland, but we can try.
I spent a lot of time putting this short film together in hopes of sharing with you the insane beauty of Iceland along with the equipment and settings I used to try and capture it.
The camera, lenses, and other gear I used to make this video and take these photos are listed in the affiliate links down below.

Iceland Northern lights 28.10. 2019
The northern lights season is blooming here in the northern part of Iceland. We had an amazing last weekend with fabulous aurora shows. We think this will be a fantastic winter, not only for northern lights tours. The northern part of Iceland is a paradise for all kind of photo and standard tours. Winter photography can be amazing fun with a lot of opportunities.
More Travel Photography in Iceland | Waterfalls and Icelandic Horses
More travel photography in Iceland was the game today on day 5 of our photography workshop here. This vlog involves some reflections, waterfalls, and Icelandic horses.
For Ivan's Iceland photography, check out @Ivanthor on IG. And for my travel photography from around the world, I'm @brendanvanson.
It's Day 5 of our travel photography workshop in Iceland. And, we were up for sunrise to shoot today. In fact, we headed to Kirkjufellsfoss which was the same location as sunset yesterday. However, instead of shooting the waterfall, I headed over with some participants to photograph the reflection of Kirkjufell in the inlet. It came out quite pretty.
Photography in Iceland is always such a pleasure, and this morning was no different. The light wasn't amazing, but the locations were incredible. I got about 4 photos around that location I'm happy with and then we moved on towards the South of Iceland.
Our photography tour in Iceland moved on later in the morning to þingvellir National Park. It's such a cool place. There are waterfalls, canyons, and cool little churches. It was a fun place to shoot some photos.
In the evening we didn't have a photography location for sunset. So, we kind of just winged it, and I'm glad I did.
We found Icelandic horses near a fence at a point and grabbed some shots of them with the light really beautiful in the background. It was a lot of fun. Icelandic horses are just so photogenic. They always make for good photos.
Tomorrow, the photography tour in Iceland continues. We're headed to some of the most iconic photography locations in the country. It should be lots of fun.
So, stay tuned to the photography channel for more.

Iceland South Coast. Landscape Photography Part 2
Part 2 of my trip to Iceland. Visiting Skogafoss and capturing the Aurora at Reykjavik.
Cameras - Sony a7r, Panasonic G7, go pro 3+ silver, Samsung Galaxy s8.
Most of the video footage was captured on my Panasonic G7. The aurora timelapse was 150 images taken on my Sony Zeiss 16-35mm f4 lens then created in Premiere.
Music written and produced by myself.
