New England Living - Nantucket
With the summer fast approaching, people are starting to make their summer vacation or weekend plans. One perennial favorite is a trip to the far away island of Nantucket. Most people remark that their first impression of the island is that it's like taking a trip back in time with all the beautifully restored antique homes and signature cobblestone streets.

When people think of architecture on Nantucket, the name Lyman Perry (lparchitects.com) often comes to mind. This award-winning architect offered us the magnificent home on Nantucket Island that we fully enjoyed touring with viewers. This is quintessential New England living in 2005!
Host Pam Fletcher takes us to the moors of Nantucket for a profile of the Cranberry Harvest Festival and a visit to the Historical Association's (nha.com) annual Harvest Fair. We also feature the Nantucket Lightship Basket Cooperative. In addition, a personal profile of artist/photographer Cary Hazlegrove (hazlegrove.com), whose photo essays beautifully capture the undiscovered side of Nantucket.

Nantucket: A Short Film by Oregon Poet Kim Stafford
In March 2013, the Nantucket Historical Association recently welcomed special guest poet and writer Kim Stafford to Nantucket for a week of outreach and creative writing programs.
Kim Stafford is Director of the Northwest Writers Institute at Lewis and Clark College in Oregon, and co-Director of the Documentary Studies Program at Lewis & Clark College. He is the author of a dozen books of poetry and prose, including The Muse Among Us: Eloquent Listening and Other Pleasures of the Writer's Craft and 100 Tricks Every Boy Can Do: How My Brother Disappeared.
While on the island, Stafford spent two days visiting with students at the Nantucket High School English department, and three days at various public events hosted by the NHA.
This week of poetry and creative writing programs is presented as a collaboration with the Nantucket Atheneum and with the generous support of the William Froelich Foundation. that included outreach in the local schools, an inspirational staff development meeting, a Food for Thought lecture, an evening of music and poetry at Greater Light, and a creative writing workshop. Kim created this film shortly after his arrival to the island that captures what he felt was the essence of the island with an emphasis on place.

Sustainable Future of Nantucket Island
On Thursday, Aug. 11, Nantucket's community leaders from business, government, education and youth heard an inspiring presentation by Will Horyn and Alex Perkins on A Look at the Sustainable Future of Nantucket Island.
Representative Tim Madden opened the event by acknowledging Will and Alex for their participation in the 7th Annual Youth Leadership Summit for Sustainable Development, which was held in June on Martha's Vineyard. While we have a tradition between our islands of rivalry in sports, we have an even longer tradition of working together on issues that matter for our collective future.
Senator John Kerry representative Cheri Rolfes then presented them with citations Will and Alex's passion for the environment has empowered their peers and their entire community to make positive changes in their daily lives. I commend Will and Alex on being inspiring young leaders who are willing to confront -- and to solve -- some of the most difficult and perplexing problems that our world faces.
The Greenhound Building was an ideal location with reminders of ways people can be part of the solution. The purpose of the event was to share highlights of the Youth Leadership Summit for Sustainable Development; to stimulate/initiate increased youth leadership for Students for Sustainability; to engage community involvement and foster a greater awareness of the fragility of the environment; and to reaffirm that change can and needs to be made. ReMain Nantucket sponsored their participation in the Youth Leadership Summit for Sustainable Development.
Will and Alex's insight and thought-provoking recommendations stemmed from where they've been, to where they would like to go -- from the Students for Sustainable Nantucket to a Nantucket Youth Leadership Initiative. They acknowledged innovations on the Island and encouraged more including sustainable business practices. They've already been making progress towards their goals, included being invited to assist with the energy audit of Nantucket public buildings. They also encouraged youth representation to town meetings. They spoke at the Rotary Club on August 10. Selectmen Chair Rick Atherton and Whitey Willauer invited them to the Community Forum on August13.
What a gratifying experience to see students who have a passion for something, go out and learn more about it, return to the island and share their knowledge and experiences. The Students for Sustainability -- Will & Alex in particular -- have raised the bar for community engagement for all of us, said NHS Principal John Buckey.
The Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce is pleased to add its support. The Institute's goal of preparing youth to sustain the delicate balance of the economic, environmental and social issues of our Island is not only important but a necessary step to preserve our island for future generations. Youth come away with a broadened perspective, and a confidence that they can make a difference in their life, their island and their world. We look forward to the great impact the Institute can make in preparing young and emerging leaders! said P.J. Martin Smith
The Stone Soup Leadership Institute hosted the annual Youth Leadership Summits for Sustainable Development and has provided technical assistance and training to develop youth-community leadership initiatives on four different islands. The Institute's Executive Director, Marianne Larned attended the event.
Coast Guard stages dramatic rescue of Aussie father and son trapped on boat in Atlantic blizzard
An Australian father and his son were rescued by the United States Coast Guard after they experienced an equipment failure on their boat in the Atlantic Ocean during a snowstorm on Sunday.
Reg McGlashan and his son Jason were planning to sail in their 13-metre boat from Narragansett Bay off Rhode Island, through Bermuda and around South Africa to their home in Port Macquarie, Australia, according to the Newport Daily News.
We've never done anything like this. Dad's not even a sailor, but he's a quick study, Jason McGlashan told the Newport Daily News article. We've got plenty of food, plenty of booze, good sails and all the safety gear you could ever need, so we're going to be OK.
However, the engine of their boat failed and a snowstorm ripped the sails at 4 a.m. on Sunday, forcing them to issue a distress call when they were about 240 km south of Nantucket, Massachusetts, NBC News reported. They were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard four hours later.
Reg McGlashan will fly back to Australia, according to NBC News, while his son said he wants to see if it's possible to salvage the boat, which is currently floating somewhere off the coast of Delaware.

The Ocean Waves in Nantucket are so Cold, They're Rolling in as Slush
The unusually cold and snowy winter in southern New England has broken records and resulted in many indellible images, from collapsed roofs to massive snow farms and a frozen Hudson River in New York. Now, a new iconic image of the winter of 2014-15 can be added to the mix: slush waves. Nantucket-based photographer Jonathan Nimerfroh captured waves coming ashore that contained bits of ice, making them resemble a slurpee.

A Day On Nantucket Island - MY FAVOURITE MEMORY YET {Phantom 4 Drone}
On a tiny little island off of the coast of New York, THE most beautiful human beings flew in from all corners of the globe. We danced spontaneously, we swam in moonlit waters, we adventured endlessly, we road tripped willingly, we laughed continuously and we made memories we will never ever forget.
The truest reason I love to travel, found in the friendships I made with single one of these beautiful humans.
Here's 1 minute 50 seconds that only attempts to capture one of my absolute favourite travel memories so far.
I give you... Nantucket Island.
Thank you Jack Wills + The Yacht Week for hosting an incredible event + for bringing the most insane squad of adventurers and go-getters together for the best week of my life.
Forever grateful.
