Mayan Ruins ~ Caracol, Cayo, Belize
Located in the Cayo District of Belize, the Mayan site given the name Caracol is very impressive. The ancient name is Ux Witz Ajaw, or “Three Hills Lord”. Though the ruins aren't as well known as other Mayan sites, LIDAR imaging done in the last decade has revealed a large Mayan city covered by the jungle. Link below.

Caracol Mayan Ruins in Belize
Caracol Mayan Ruins in Pine Ridge Preserve, Belize. Hidden deep in the rainforest, these ancient ruins were only discovered in 1937, making them the most recent city discovered from Maya. It houses several buildings and pyramids which were set up as residence in a class system; the higher class was the closer to the top of the pyramids, so you were closer to the Gods. Our guide said that Caracol was abandoned after several years of drought, so the mayan's left for easier to farm land. Back in its hay-day, it covered about 112 square miles (180km)! A breathtaking site!
No drones allowed though, so I had to make due with GoPro & phone footage.

Amazing adventures - Belize - Caracol Archaeological Reserve - Maya archaeological site in Belize
Caracol Archaeological Reserve.
The Caracol area was occupied as early as 1200 BC, yet occupation in the epicentral area was no earlier than 650 BC and lasted no later than AD 950.
Caracol boasts 53 carved stone monuments (25 stelae and 28 altars), and more than 250 burials and 200 caches.
By the Early Classic (between AD 250 and 550) Caracol was tied into extensive trade networks and pan-lowland ideological systems,[7] leading to a unified regional economy [16] The Caracol was officially founded in AD 331 (8.14.13.10.4) by Te’ K’ab Chaak. Special Deposit C117F-1, a Teotihuacan style cremation of three individuals dates precisely to this period, indicating early influences from northern Mexico .

caracol belize special constable shot dead 2014
Just before midday September 25th, 2014, 20 year-
old Special Constable (SC) Danny Conorquie, assigned to the Tourism Police Unit was shot and killed in the line of duty at the Caracol Archaeological Site in the Cayo District. Initial reports reveal that SC Conorquie approached two men of Hispanic descent who were on horseback. The two men opened fire, mortally wounding SC Conorquie, and then fled the scene retreating into the dense cover of the jungle. SC Conorquie was rushed to the San Ignacio Town hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. A special constable in Belize is not a full police officer, but rather a low ranking officer receiving two weeks basic training aimed at assisting police officers in the execution of their duties. Caracol is a highly visited tourism site. It is believed that Belizean soldiers in the area had stolen or confiscated 5 horses from peasants in the area, and the peasants retaliated. This is the first time a Belizean has been killed in the area by suspected nationals from Guatemala. Over the past decade some 11 Guatemalan peasants have been shot dead by Belize's security forces.

Caracol Mayan Ruins Tour - Pacz Tours San Ignacio Belize
Read on below or Book Tour here:
Tour Guide Bruce of Pacz Tours, explains about Caracol and its link to the demise of the Mayan Civilization.
Welcome to Caracol.
We will start off by going to some of the residential structures and then we'll go to some of the bigger ones. We won't have enough time to go around the entire site as Caracol covers 55 square miles, with sub 36,000 structures. We'll do the epic center which contains about 79 structures two and a half kilometers.
We are at the South Acropolis group, which is a small residential complex for the extended families of the ruler. The first excavation done here was by Linton sorrow, back in the 1950s. They uncovered two burials of members of the royal family. Four more burials were also dogged by the University of Central Florida in the 90s. All four of them were proven to be members of the Royal.
Up until 1100s they were small groups but were the final abandonment. Our evidence suggests rapid abandonment. We from human remains on structures. Large numbers of Pattories in rooms buildings are working on and they never finish. Usually, they bury their dead and if you're planning to move you're supposed to take care of pots and pans. In this case, it looks like they never had time to do that, they were running for their life. At the same time what we found out is the increase of sacrifices in the cave. Between nine and eleven hundred AD. It got to the point where a lot more children or being sacrificed and even members of the royal family.
Caracol Archeological Site - Belize Mayan Ruins Tour.
Caracol Mayan Ruins Tour is unlike any other site in Belize. Because it’s so secluded, there’s more wildlife that calls it home–like the ocellated turkey, the keel-billed toucan, and the legendary mot-mot. And like the famous buried city of Cumae in Italy, most of the city still lies sleeping underground. But even the small fraction of buildings exposed to the air offer testament to the city’s majesty.
In addition to these extraordinary ruins, PACZ offers two stops on the way there or back: first, the breathtaking Rio Frio cave, with its eerie subterranean beach and ceilings high enough to fit a cathedral. You can try capturing it all in one camera shot, but no one’s ever succeeded!
Price: $95USD - Included: Professional Guide, Lunch, Entrance fees & Taxes.
Duration: Approx. 8hrs
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Departure: 7:30AM Meet in-front of Pacz Office or pick up at hotels – in or around San Ignacio Town
What to Bring: Hiking shoes, Bug spray, Hat, Backpack for carrying Swimwear, towel.
