Brew master becomes founder of Jordan's first microbrewery
A 29-year-old brew master has founded the first microbrewery in Jordan.
It's the dream of Yazan Karadsheh to gain worldwide recognition for his Carakale beer, that's while putting Jordan on the brewing map.
Jordan's first microbrewery fizzing with action.
This was the aim of Carakale's founder Yazan Karadsheh; to bring the tradition of beer back to its roots here in Mesopotamia.
Beer was discovered here over seven centuries ago.
Now, it's not the most likely place to find such a business.
While alcohol is allowed here, being a Muslim country means it's not truly accepted in public.
It took Karadsheh two years to get permission to build this factory.
He quit his job at US energy and services conglomerate, Halliburton, to get a job at a brew store in Colorado, US, in order to study the science of brewing.
But when he read a book about beers from all round the world, he couldn't find Jordan on the map. Jordanian beer is produced under the license of Dutch brewer Amstel.
How the project started was a series of fortunate events, he says.
I was in Barnes and Nobles, a world beer book fell upon me, I looked for our brewery, the one that I grew up on, drinking as I was growing up, and I couldn't find it in the book, I was looking for Jordan, furiously I couldn't find it, and I looked for the brewery and it turns out it was in Netherlands, so that's when the light bulb clicked in my head and I said we should have our own beer, our national beer, so I started working on this project about 8 years ago.
Karadesh now aims to revolutionise the way people taste, smell and treat beer in Jordan.
He's re-introducing flavour, richness, aroma and even a slightly bitter taste.
He says the biggest obstacle is transforming tastes and habits in a market long accustomed to watered-down, light beer.
When we talk about beer in Jordan, we talk about one style, one specific style of beer which is Pilsner, he says.
It's underneath the lager yeast. Pilsner is an amazing beer, I have no quarrel with it, I'm just bored of it, the entire world is actually bored of it. There's a huge beer revolution happening all over the planet, people are sick and tired of the mass-produced, volumetric, very monolithic beer, they want different styles, different flavours, different aromas, different colours.
To produce the best quality beer, Karadsheh imports ingredients from Germany, the UK and the United States.
And to achieve the best possible taste they pay attention to the three main enemies of beer; light, heat and oxygen.
He says his microbrewery was started with two very clear aims.
The different beers, different styles, different situations in life, you have the options of getting it in the liquor store here, he says.
So, what we're trying to do is a beer culture, so it's one of our big mission statements in our company. Our second mission statement is to have international recognised brewery, to have Carakale just like you have RJ as an international recognised airline, everybody knows it's a Jordanian airline, we want to have an internationally recognised beer, something for a flagship, for our home town, for Jordan.
Karadsheh is currently concentrating on the local market, but also plans to expand to an export market as well.
He wants to export beer to create brand awareness and cause international markets to sit up and take notice of Jordan as a beer-brewing country.
That means impressing people like these tourists visiting Jordan from Spain.
Super beer, because it's local and I think it's strong. In Spain we like this kind of beer, strong and really refreshing and it's super, says Maria Jose Gomez.
The Carakale brewery can produce 6 million bottles annually.

SUMMARY
=======
Beer in Jordan has existed since its first introduction in the region thousands of years ago in ancient Iraq and ancient Egypt; today the country has several companies producing beer. In 1958, General Investment Company (GIC) was the first Amstel beer factory outside The Netherlands, established in Zarqa. In 1964, GIC introduced Petra the oldest beer of Jordan and available in 3 different varieties; Lager, Weizen and Amber.
Several other local companies took the lead in producing beer; however, the country had no microbreweries. In 2012 Jordan's first microbrewery was established called Carakale Brewery.
