Carcross Desert
We took a trip out to Carcross for a few hours and stopped off at the Carcross Desert just outside of town. Great day to go for a drive, with blue sky's, sun, with a few clouds and a bit of wind to keep the bugs away.
Carcross and the Carcross Desert is about a 45 minutes drive down the #2 highway south of Whitehorse Yukon.
This tiny square mile of Canadian sand was once considered the world's smallest and most northern desert. The Carcross Desert was formerly the bed of a Pleistocene glacial lake, and remains arid due to the rain shadow effects of the mountains in Yukon’s southern lakes region.
Although the winds are harsh and inhibitory to most plant life, the dunes are home to a few unusual flora, even sporting the exceptionally rare Baikal Sedge (which is normally found only off the coast of Lake Baikal in Siberia). Ten or more species of insects found in the Carcross Dunes are found in few other places on earth. Scientists studying the dunes have found eight species of insects that may be new to science.
The Carcross Desert The Smallest Desert In The World
Carcross Desert is the smallest desert on earth which occupies an area of about 1 square mile. It is situated right outside the community of Carcross in Yukon, Canada. Carcross might not be the northernmost wilderness in the world, but it is the most remarkably contained desert. The climate of the surrounding region is too humid for it to be considered to be a desert.
Carcross Desert was created during the last glacial era when numerous big glacial lakes which were formed in the area deposited silt. The dunes were left behind after the lakes dried up. Currently, sand is blown by the wind from the nearby Lake Bennett. Even though the region is too dry for most plant life to grow, there are some few unusual crops like Yukon lupine and Baikal sedge which thrive in Carcross Desert.
The locals use the dunes for sandboarding in summer, and during winter they use the desert for snowboarding and cross-country skiing. Other summer activities which people enjoy on the desert include all-terrain vehicles, skydiving, and hiking. Numerous tourists groups use the desert for their off-road scenic visits. The nearby Yukon and White Pass Route is a top-rated tourist attraction which brings many visitors to the area every year.
