The Cougars were formed in 1986 as the East Kent Cougars but did not play in a league until 87 when they joined the newly formed B.G.F.L. The team was placed in the Eastern Conference where they faced strong opposition .The Cougars achieved a 7-3 record and went on to the semi final where they lost to the bowl winners Mersey centurions in a hard game.
In 1988 the Cougars stayed with the extended B.G.F.L. and were placed in the Thames Conference which they won with an unbeaten 10-0 record. The team went on to the Play Offs but lost in the quarter finals again to the eventual Bowl winners the Woking Generals.
1989 saw the B.G.F.L. merge with the N.G.L. to form the British National Gridiron League. The Cougars were placed in the Southern Conference for what proved to be an exciting season. By the end of the season the Cougars posted a 7-2-1 record and were beaten in the Play Offs by the eventual bowl winners the Norwich Devils.
1990 saw the Cougars matched with Kent rivals the Medway Mustangs. A season fill of promise turned sour due to a never ending injury list. The end result was a record of 2-8. By the end of the season steps were already under way to secure a brighter future for the club. The East Kent Cougars Management approached the highly successful local youth team the Maidstone Pumas with the aim of setting up a truly Kent based American Football Club.
The 1991 season saw the Kent Cougars produce an unbeaten 9-0 record in the South Eastern Conference of the Premier Division. In the first round of Play Offs they entertained old rivals the LA Panthers and lost a tight game.
1992 saw the Cougars moving base from Mote Park, Maidstone to the Anchorians Rugby Club Gillingham. The opposition this season was strong and the Cougars found a place in the Play Offs with a 7-0-3 record. Drawn against Plymouth Admirals in the quarter finals meant a long journey across the country only made better by a last minute defensive stand gaining the Cougars a position in the semi final against the Delonghi Knights, where unfortunately they were unsuccessful in winning a place in the final.ription
