TURKEY: Hiking The Сarian Trail
In ancient times, on the territory of the present Turkish provinces, Mugla and Aydin, was the state of Caria. In the north, it bordered with Lydia, in the northeast — with Phrygia and Pisidia. In the east — with Lycia.
Caria — one of the most picturesque regions of Turkey. There is everything here. Ancient ruins, paved stone caravan roads, hillsides, goat tracks, godforsaken villages, pine woods, olive and almond trees, vineyards and sea beaches.
In 2013, across Caria's territory, was laid a 820-kilometer long walking tourist route.
The Сarian Trail, or in Turkish, Karia Yolu, is marked by standard red-white marks. It is possible to travel on it without a guide. It is enough to acquire the detailed guide with the map.
Yunus Ozdemir, was the ideological inspirer of the Сarian Trail. He personally participated in its creation and description. He is one of the coauthors of the Carian Trail guide. And precisely knows which sites are the most interesting. And which ones, if need be, can be passed.
The Сarian Trail is presently, poorly known. There are no tourists traveling on it. Absolutely none. There are no tourists infrastructures as well. Guesthouses and restaurants are rare. Nevertheless, it is possible to count on the hospitality of locals. But it is better to be autonomous. To travel with a reliable tent and to cook food on a fire.
There is a lot of water. Springs and wells can often be encountered.
Finding firewood is not a problem. It is not forbidden to kindle fires.
It is only necessary to observe the safety measures for fire.
The trail is divided into four sites, differing on their geographical features and landscapes: the Bozburun Peninsula , the Datcha Peninsula, the Ceramic Gulf and Carian remote place.
The Сarian Trail begins near Marmaris. In the resort settlement of Icmeler. And immediately dives into the maze of trails, running through the overgrown slopes covered with pines.
The city of Labranda was part of Caria. In 545 BC, it was captured by the Persians. And in 334 BC - by Alexander The Great's army.
The ruins of Labranda are protected. But security guards almost don't speak English. They don't get enough practice. Foreign tourists rarely pass by here.
All of the Bafa Lake area is declared a Natural Park, and is taken under state protection. Fishing is still allowed. But it is already strictly forbidden to hunt.
In ancient times, on the bank of the Latmos Gulf of the Aegean Sea, was the city of Heraclea on Latm. Later the gulf became shallow. And after an earthquake, the level of the land rised, and it turned into a lake.
The Сarian Trail runs along on the scattered sections of the ancient road, which have been preserved up to now. It led from the internal regions of Caria, to the seaport of Heraclea.
Near the town of Karpuzla, ruins of the ancient city of Alinda have remained. In the 14th century BC, Hittites lived here. Back then, the city was known under the name Ialanta. Later, already under the name Alinda, it belonged to the famous tsar, Mausolus of Caria.
Near Alinda, there is one more ancient city — Alabanda.

Hiking in Turkey, from Dalyan to Ekincik (section C4 of the EcoTrails)
The walk from Dalyan to Ekincik is a great one and has been marked for many years. At the moment most sections of it are part of both the CarianTrail and the EcoTrails. In this video I take the classic path to Ekincik where I will be picked up by a boat to return to Dalyan. As a foreigner living in Turkey life is one big adventure.

Кария — один из самых живописных регионов Турции. Здесь есть все. Древние руины, мощёные камнем караванные дороги, горные склоны, козьи тропы, забытые Богом деревеньки, сосновые леса, оливковые и миндальные деревья, виноградники и морские пляжи.
В 2013 году по территории Карии проложили 820-километровый пешеходный туристический маршрут.
Карийская тропа или по-турецки Кария Йолу маркирована стандартными красно-белыми метками. Пройти по ней можно и без гида. Достаточно приобрести подробный путеводитель с картой. А еще лучше лично пообщаться с один из соавторов этого путеводителя.
Юнус Оздемир был идейным вдохновителем Карийской тропы. И лично участвовал в ее создании и описании. Он один из соавторов путеводителя по тропе. И точно знает, какие участки самые интересные. А какие, в случае необходимости, можно и пропустить.
Карийская тропа еще мало известна. Туристов на ней нет. Совсем. Нет и туристической инфраструктуры. Пансионы и рестораны встречаются редко. Можно рассчитывать на гостеприимство местных жителей. Но лучше настраиваться на автономный поход. Взять с собой надежную палатку и готовить еду на костре.
Воды много. Часто попадаются родники и колодцы. С дровами тоже проблем нет. Костры разжигать не запрещено. Нужно только соблюдать меры противопожарной безопасности.
Ходить по тропе можно в любое время год. Но лучше это делать осенью или весной.
Тропа разделяется на несколько участков, различающихся по своим географическим особенностям и пейзажам: Полуостров Бозбурн, Полуостров Датча, Керамический залив и Карийская глубинка.

LAKE BAFA
Once, Lake Bafa was connected to the Aegean Sea and was the remotest part of the deep Gulf of Miletus. Along this gulf lay the mighty city of Miletus (protecting the gulf entrance), Priene’s harbour (Nulochos) and smaller harbour towns like Myus, Phyrrh, Heracleia of Latmos and Ioniapolis. Ionaiapolis was established before Heracleia and its harbour was once used by Miletos and also Latmos, the small town bearing the mountain’s name. Beginning in Late Antiquity (around the 5th century), alluvial deposits of the Meander River gradually silted up the entrance of the Latmos Gulf so that by the end of the Middle Ages (around the 15th century) its connection with the sea was completely cut off.
Today, we know of 224 bird species living around Lake Bafa. On the slopes of Latmos Mountain (Beþparmak Daðý) twenty different orchids and endemic plants are to be found. Lake Bafa was declared a national park in 1989. The park covers 65 square kilometres and is home to birds like the Dalmatian pelican, fish eagle, common tern, pygmy cormorant and heron while the lake itself is populated by those famous eels, Bafa grey mullet, sea bass and sea bream. Wild boar, foxes, wildcats, hedgehogs and badgers all inhabit the surrounding Latmos Mountains. The unique flora and fauna of the lake and its surrounding attract birdwatchers, botanists, painters and nature lovers; the giant slabs of rock and the ancient walking trails are a paradise for hikers and boulder-climbing, and last but not least, the lake is perfect for boat trips.
A CARIAN TOWN IN THE LATMOS MOUNTAINS: HERACLEIA
The Beþparmak Mountain, or Latmos, to give it its ancient name, rises steeply from the shores of Lake Bafa and is considered one of Anatolia’s most sacred mountains. Tekerlek, the highest peak of Latmos, has, since prehistoric times, served as a cult site for rain, consequently for fertility. In ancient times, the Anatolian weather god and a local mountain god were worshipped here. Later on, Zeus and Endymion (lover of moon goddess Selene), took their place. During Pleistarchus’ era in Heracleia, a network of stone-paved roads crossing the Latmos was constructed, serving as trade routes for olives, olive oil, the famous Carian honey and wine.
PREHISTORIC CAVE PAINTINGS IN HERACLEIA OF LATMOS
Recently-discovered cave paintings dating from the 5th and 6th millennium BC have added a new dimension to the history of Latmos. So far, we know of 170 such paintings. In chronological order, Latmos was controlled by the Hittites, Carians, Hellenists, Romans and Byzantines before coming under Ottoman rule at the end of the 13th century. The large number of caves in the Latmos mountains provided refuge to ‘cloisterers’ (recluses) and eremites (hermits), driven out of Sinai and Southern Arabia in the 7th century to search refuge in the Latmos mountains. Perhaps the most well-known of these was St Paul the Younger, who lived in the 10th century and whose fame spread beyond the boundaries of those countries.
KAPIKIRI VILLAGE
Kapikiri has a population of 320 people. The villagers mostly make their living from animal husbandry, fishing, olives and beekeeping, while some families make a living from tourism. Our region is located in the most important (from a tourism point of view) culture- and nature-rich national park. Lake Bafa is surrounded by important ancient sites. This is the perfect starting point for excursions to Ephesus, Iasos, Labranda, Priene, Miletos, Bodrum (Halicarnassus), Kuþadasý, Pamukkale, Didyma, Euromos, Alinda and many other places.

Right at the beginning of the ECOtrails, this hike is a great one for lovers of Amber trees and rivers. Make sure to bring water shoes for the many water crossings. This trek is especially suitable for the warmer months. Plenty of water to cool down in and have fun with. As a foreigner living in Turkey life is one big adventure.

Family Bike Holidays, Boat Charters and the Carian Coast from Marmaris
Family holidays are well spent when you combine a fantastic bike trip and boat charter in Turkey. Other than the Lycian coast near Antalya; a wonderful alternative and one of the best biking trails found are along the Carian coast from Marmaris. Marmaris and its surrounding villages present full backdrops of bordering lush green pine and eucalyptus hilltops. It is amazing how much the Marmaris region offers in plenty of breathtaking scenery and nature paths, ideal for biking - as well as hiking.

#MarmarisKentKonseyi öncülüğünde Marmaris'teki sivil toplum dernek üyeleriyle, Turunç Mahallesi Kumlubük Bakla Bükü mevkiinde Milli Park sınırı içinde açılan yol ile ilgili protesto gösterisi yapıldı.
Başkan Beytekin: Dünyanın İncisi sıfatını sonuna kadar hak eden bir kentte yaşıyoruz. 1.5 km uzunluğunda ve 4 metre genişliğinde iki parça yol yapılmıştır. Arazi düzlenerek aralarında Çam, Zeytin ve Sandal ağacı gibi farklı türlerin olduğu çok sayıda ağaç kesilmiş veya kökten sökülmüş ve buradaki habitat da ağır zarar görmüştür.
