Downtown Willemstad Curacao - Trolley Train Tour
Willemstad is the capital city of Curaçao, an island in the southern Caribbean Sea that forms a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Formerly the capital of the Netherlands Antilles prior to its dissolution in 2010, it has an estimated population of 150,000. The historic centre of the city consists of four quarters: the Punda and Otrobanda, which are separated by the Sint Anna Bay, an inlet that leads into the large natural harbour called the Schottegat, as well as the Scharloo and Pietermaai Smal quarters, which are across from each other on the smaller Waaigat harbour. Willemstad is home to the Curaçao synagogue, the oldest surviving synagogue in the Americas. The city centre, with its unique architecture and harbour entry, has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. ( Wikipedia )

Curacao (Willemstad) Cruise Port Guide: Tips and Overview
The Dutch Caribbean island of Curacao -- known for its centuries-old, brightly colored architecture -- is located in the Caribbean Sea, about 45 miles north of Venezuela. Cruise ships dock in the Capital city of Willemstad, which had its historic city center selected as a UNESCO world heritage site in 1997.
While some smaller ships dock in the harbor of St. Anna Bay, most dock at the Mega Pier. Both are within walking distance of the city’s shopping and tourist areas. In this video, we will explore Curacao by foot, starting from the Mega Pier.

TRANSCRIPT:
Next stop is Willemstad, Curaçao!
This was a great port to come into because of all of the colors of these buildings that you see in the downtown pier area. Every color of the rainbow, and all the architecture is different.
In fact, this was deemed a UNESCO World Heritage site because the downtown is so unique.
It is separated Willemstad by a water in land that goes about a mile or so into the oil refineries because Curaçao is one of the largest refineries, refining the oil from Venezuela.
There is extremely tall bridge allowing big ships with gigantic mass as we were there we saw a Dutch warship go through. But they also have oil tankers that come in and out and it will accommodate that.
There's also a walking bridge between the two sides of Willemstad. And instead of it being a drop bridge what happens, think of your arm moving all the way out to the side to the opposite side of the city to allow a ship to pass and then when it does it comes all the way back.
In fact, when the bridge is moving you can actually stand on it and it's a pretty fun thing thing to do.
Also another point of interest is one of the oldest synagogues built in 1674 is located also in Curaçao.
We stopped by and saw floating market.
Most all of the produce vegetables and fruits are brought in from Venezuela and very few things are grown on the island. But I do know that they have a certain type of corn that is grown.
It has wonderful beaches and we took a bus around tour and saw many of the beaches with the hotels and they have the beautiful white sandy beaches similar to what you see in Aruba.
It is also a great place for R & R, and also the old town was one of my highlights of the trip so far.
In closing, my wish for you is that you will love abundantly, protect your health, and be adventurous for life. You are beautiful. Let your light shine, Aloha!

A much-debated question is when and for whom the city of Willemstad was named. According to one historian, Willemstad was named after Stadhouder (stadtholder) William II. But a second historian, who made a very deep study of Willemstad, thinks that the city was named after Stadhouder William III, who occupied this position in 1672 and in 1688, became King of England.
The naming of Willemstad could have been related to the fact that in 1674, the new West Indian Company was instituted. In 1675 Willemstad was declared a free port in the hope this would stimulate the economy. The free port needed a suitable name that would attract people's attention. The first time the name Willemstad is mentioned in the archives was in 1680.
Willemstad, capital of Curaçao, is one of the world's richest cities in culture and diversity. The city itself is actually divided in two sections — Punda and Otrobanda — connected by the Queen Emma pontoon bridge. Both sections provide visitors with duty-free shopping. Willemstad has a population of 135,000, comprising 55 nationalities.
Like Havana (Cuba) and San Juan (Puerto Rico), Willemstad is a typical port town. However, it is one without a hinterland -- focused on trade with the surrounding colonies, mainly the Spanish colonies on the South American continental coast, but also with French and English colonies.
According to a comprehensive survey by the government monument bureau, there are 750 historic buildings in Willemstad alone, which merit preservation. New scaffolding goes up almost every month. Progress has been astonishing in just 10 years and it is likely that, in the very near future, regions of Willemstad will have regained their former splendor.

BEST FREE BEACH in Curaçao: Grote Knip
We asked all the locals and they all agreed - the best beach in Curacao is Grote Knip. We went to check it out on a sunny Saturday in mid-January.
There are better beaches in Curacao, but the best beaches all require a fee to enter (not much, usually around $5 per person). Only a few beaches are completely free on the island. Of those free ones, this is supposedly the best.
Many thanks to Cody and Marisa, my friends who currently live on the island, for driving and taking the time to play. You're great adventure buddies.
You'll need a car to get to Grote Knip (Playa Kenepa Grandi in Papiamentu). It's about a 45 minute drive from Willemstad, near Westpunt.
