Chilcotin Rafting
In June 2014 we went on a rafting trip with Big Canyon Rafting. We went a beautiful overnight trip on the Chilcotin River just outside of Williams Lake, BC. The area has pristine wilderness, amazing wildlife, and has some fascinating history.
For anyone interested in exploring this area there is no better way than hoping on a raft and drifting downstream.

The Great Darkening: Who were The Chilcotin Chiefs?
The Great Darkening describes the experience of many British Columbia First Nations during, and in the aftermath of, several horrific smallpox epidemics that took place over about 12 months beginning in mid-1862.
Not only can the death toll be estimated as perhaps 100,000, including more than 75 percent of some whole nations (!), this massive depopulation allowed the British Colonies on the Pacific Shelf to deprive survivors of their rights of citizenship, to dispossess them of their lands and to begin suppressing their cultures...all with little other violence.
While Canadian historians explain this tragic event as a natural disaster, based on the first hand accounts of survivors, native elders have always taught that settlers purposefully introduced and spread smallpox to take possession of native land without paying or making treaties. Both sides of this story cannot be true.
Tom Swanky's book, The True Story of Canada's 'War' of Extermination on the Pacific is the first attempt to reconcile the native tradition with the colonial written record to uncover the truth. The results of this investigation have many modern day implications and are relevant to all Canadians. To buy the book, or learn more about Tom's research, visit: ShawnSwanky.com.

Jill and Ray's Backroads Adventure to the Chilko River for some great Trout Fishing
We travelled from Big Bar Lake to Gang Ranch - then followed a road that was not much more than a cart trail. Then onto logging roads to Big Creek and Lee's Corner. Through Alexis Creek and Tatla Lake and then, finally, 60 kilometres of gravel road to the head of the Chilko River. We stayed at Chilko River Lodge but fished from Chilko Lake Lodge (where we met Travis - who is just as passionate a fly fisherman as Ray is!). Lots of good fishing and beautiful scenery. We will definitely go back.
