The 41st Galway International Arts Festival came to a close on Sunday 29th July 2018 following its biggest Festival to date. 252,748 attended over 200 events across the 14 days, while 145,000 people passed through the inaugural Festival Garden, making it the biggest Festival yet. See
Over 600 participating artists enthralled audiences attending performances, talks, concerts, street events and exhibitions. Attendance was up by 20% on 2017 and early estimates suggest that the two-week event will have an economic impact of at least €29.5 million.
In what was a new and very welcome development at this year’s Festival, 145,000 flocked to the new Festival Garden on Eyre Square. The Garden was a huge hit with locals, visitors and young and old alike who enjoyed al-fresco dining with delicious food as well as occasional pop-up performances with guest artists.
Rave reviews flooded in for the world premiere of the Festival’s production of Incantata by Paul Muldoon, co-produced with Jen Coppinger. Described as ‘a remarkable piece of theatre’ (The Irish Examiner) and ‘visually stunning’ (The Guardian), Stanley Townsend’s outstanding performance was lauded as ‘electrifying’ (The Sunday Independent) and ‘compelling’ (The Guardian).
Thousands of visitors from Ireland and across the world travelled to Galway to take part in the Festival. In 2017, 37% of the Festival’s visitors were from outside of Ireland with 18% visiting from around Ireland and 45% from Galway.
Galway International Arts Festival would like to acknowledge the support of its principal funding agencies the Arts Council and Fáilte Ireland, Leadership Partner Ulster Bank, Drinks Partner Heineken and Education Partner NUI Galway.

Galway International Arts Festival 2018
Ireland’s most charming city comes alive every July, as extraordinary descends on its medieval streets. Known as the City of the Tribes, the home of Galway International Arts Festival is renowned for its welcome and has been voted the ‘World’s Friendliest City’ by Condé Nast Traveler Magazine. For more information, see:
A vibrant university city, a UNESCO City of Film, Galway hosts the European Region of Gastronomy in 2018 and will become the European Capital of Culture in 2020.
Easily accessible from Dublin and Shannon Airports, visitors to Galway can explore the city’s rich heritage, enjoy spectacular views of Galway Bay, take cruises on the River Corrib or tour out along the Wild Atlantic Way. They can soak up the scenery in Connemara, enter another world on the Aran islands or take in the Cliffs of Moher.
But for two packed weeks every year, over 210,000 visitors and locals enjoy the key cultural event on Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way. Named by The Guardian as ‘One of the Top Five Summer Festivals in Europe’ in 2017, Galway International Arts Festival includes music, theatre, street, dance, opera, the visual arts and an extensive talks programme.
Visitors can hear Ireland’s finest traditional musicians and experience exhibitions by internationally renowned and emerging visual artists who have taken up residency in festival galleries.
They can come face-to-face with fire-breathing dragons, hear giant, soprano-singing divas on cobblestone streets, watch the curtain rise and fall on international world premieres, catch new Irish theatre before it goes on to tour the globe, see world-class dance acts, genre bending opera and top international music acts.
By night, they can eat in top-rated restaurants (including Michelin starred restaurants), an array of quirky local eateries and enjoy a fire-side drink in Galway’s cosy city centre bars.
They can then retire to a wide offering of accommodation options around the city and wake up to do it all over again.
