UPDATE: Body of 9 Year old Boy Pulled From Buck Creek in Springfield
SPRINGFIELD -- After three hours of frantically searching Buck Creek, rescuers recovered the body of nine year old Colin Jenkins Monday.
A mother's ultimate pain: losing her child unexpectedly.
Colin was out on the water behind Carleton Davidson Stadium on Mitchell boulevard with his uncle and three brothers. Officials say the boys were sliding down a moss-covered dam into rolling water.
At the end of that low head dam the water turns over on itself, and if you get caught up in that you can't get out, Springfield Fire Captain Pat Casey explained Monday.
Officials say if Colin had been under water for even just 10 minutes, his chances of survival would've been slim.
Collin couldn't swim, but Captain Casey says even experienced swimmers are at risk.
Regardless of how good a swimmer you are, you can't get out. Even at this low current. It's very hazardous, Casey added solemnly. Its very unfortuante that this particular location is out of sight from everybody, so it's very hard to regulate restrictions in this area.
Safety officials depend on 'No Swiming' signs to deter people from braving the volatile waters.
It's not adventure you'll find in this water, but tragedy.
A very bad day all around. For the family and firefighters. The hardest part of our day is when we have the loss of a child, Casey added.
Officials say it's still unclear, but possible, that Collin's uncle could be charged as a result of his death.
