Another great cycle today. We started in Carlingford and went all the way to Newry in NorthernIreland
It was a lot uphill but we made it and finished the last stretch on the Greenway which was just full of stunning views. After 57.7km we arrived back in Carlingford.

Greenway Carlingford - Omeath
a wee video to show the Greenway which used to be the old train line between Carlingford and Omeath.
Song written and performed by Andy O D
Carlingford Co Louth Ireland.
In this video I give you a quick look around Carlingford village in the Northeast of southern Ireland, the village is a 10min drive from the border with Northern Ireland. I go walking here and in summer I head up the back of the village hill walking. Hope you enjoy, it's not a detailed video and there is lots more to see and do.

Carlingford Lough Greenway
The Carlingford Lough Greenway will provide a world class cross-border green travel route running parallel to the A1/N1 Newry to Carlingford Road which is narrow and unsuitable for cyclists. The project extends for approximately 25km from Newry City through the villages of Omeath and Carlingford to Greenore, providing a much needed recreational facility for this area. When completed, this Greenway will link with the existing Newry/Portadown Cycleway/Towpath resulting in a total length of 52km of Greenway along the east coast of Ireland enabling walkers and cyclists to travel off-road between Belfast and Dublin using Sustrans Route 9 (The Great Eastern Greenway).
Phase 1 of the project was funded by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council through the Landfill Communities Fund administered by Ulster Wildlife.
Louth County Council has already constructed 6.2km of Greenway from Omeath to Carlingford Marina and this has proved very popular with the public since it opened in 2014. The two Councils, working in partnership have agreed to develop a Cross-border Greenway to extend the Newry section from the Weir on Middlebank to Victoria Lock and across the border to link up with the existing Greenway in Omeath. This scheme when completed shall be known as the Carlingford Lough Greenway.
Further funding has been secured from INTEREGG Va to deliver phase 2 of the project from the Weir to Omeath and from Carlingford Marina to Carlingford. This is a wonderful example of effective Cross Border cooperation to deliver a world-class outdoor recreational facility for everyone to use and enjoy.
This is a wonderful example of effective Cross Border cooperation to deliver a world class outdoor recreational facility for everyone to use and enjoy.
When the Greenway is completed it will be the only totally off-road pedestrian link between Newry and Carlingford as such has the potential to be developed as a safe access for locals and visitors to use. It will provide immediate benefits to people living adjacent to the greenway, improving the living environment and providing opportunities for leisure, exercise, recreation and supporting healthier lifestyles.

The long anticipated 5.7km stretch of the New Carlingford Lough Greenway opened for use on Friday 4 May.
Phase 1 of the Greenway from Newry to the Weir on the Middlebank was funded by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council through the Landfill Communities Fund administered by Ulster Wildlife.
The Council, in partnership with Louth County Council, secured funding of 3.46 million euros from the European Union’s INTEREGG VA, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB), to deliver Phase 2 of the Carlingford Lough Greenway from the Weir on the Middlebank to Omeath, and from Carlingford Marina to Carlingford. Phase 2 will build on the recently completed, and already popular, Carlingford Marina to Omeath Greenway and is scheduled to be completed in 2020. Once open it will be known as the Carlingford Lough Greenway.

Ghan House, Carlingford
About us
Built in 1727, Ghan House is a 4* AA rated, fully restored, family run Georgian House now in its 23rd year of continuous business with 17 years of awards and nominations (see bottom of page).
We are one of the oldest private houses of its type in Ireland, a tree length from Medieval Carlingford with 3 acres of walled mature gardens.
All of Carlingford's ancient buildings dating as far back at 1210; from King John's Castle, the Dominican Friary, the Mint and Taaffe's Castle are within a 2 minute walk from our front door. The Tholsel, Medieval Carlingford's old town gate, is just 30 metres from our walls.
We are in a wonderful location just one hour from both Dublin and Belfast and two of Ireland’s three World Heritage sites are within easy driving distance - just 45 minutes to Newgrange and a 120 minute drive to the stunning Giant's Causeway.
In addition the Titanic museum in Belfast and the Dublin Convention Centre are both just a one hour drive from our gates.
Ghan House is an oasis of Georgian ambience, gardens and fine dining with beautiful views from every room of Carlingford Lough, The Mourne mountains or Slieve Foy . We have 12 bedrooms in total ~ 4 in the Main House (1 single and 3 double) and 8 Garden bedrooms located 10 yards to the side of the Main House. The combination of old world charm allayed with modern requirements seamlessly dovetail together to give a thoroughly unique experience. We offer free wi-fi throughout the entire house and all of the bedrooms.
The individuality of the house lends itself to weddings, usually on an exclusive use basis, private dining for special birthdays & hen nights and corporate hospitality - all enjoying the comforts of a private bar, log fires & candlelight. We also have private parking, charging point for electric cars, a lockable shed for bicycles and 2 little homes in the stable for dogs (pets are not allowed in the house or bedrooms, sorry).
We have a small dedicated team - Orla & Sarahs 1 & 2 in the office, Olavi front of house, Dara serving breakfast and of course our multi-award winning kitchen team led by Head Chef, Stephane le Sourne. All of this is overseen by Paul Carroll. His mother Joyce Carroll is semi-retired ~ she attends to the herb & vegetable gardens, the flowers in the house, some cookery demonstrations and visits to approximately 14 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
