Final day for one of Morpeth’s oldest shops
A FAMILY business in Morpeth, Northumberland, closes for the last time today, bringing an end to 120 years of tradition.
And the couple who have run Varley’s Fruit Shop for the last 35 years have warned that small traders must pull together to resist out of town retail development if the high street is to survive.
Michael and Christine Ogle say they can no longer compete against supermarket price wars.
Although the shop is closing, the couple will continue to run Christine’s Lavenders Blue floristry business, which specialises in weddings, from home. They can be contacted by e-mail at dillidilli25@gmail.com

Morpeth, situated on the River Wansbeck about 1.25 miles (2 km) from the A1, is the county town] of Northumberland in northeast of England. Since 1981, it has been the administrative centre of the County of Northumberland.] Nearby villages include Mitford and Pegswood. Historical landmarks in the town include a free-standing 17th-century clock tower, a grand town hall, originally designed by Sir John Vanbrugh (rebuilt 1869); Collingwood House, the Georgian home of Admiral Lord Collingwood; and Morpeth Chantry, a 13th-century chapel that now houses the town's tourist information centre and the Morpeth Chantry Bagpipe Museum.
Morpeth
Morpeth castle was built in the 14th century by Ranulph de Merlay on the site of an earlier fortress, only the gatehouse and parts of the ruined walls remain.

Hope you enjoy the walk with me.
Mitford Castle is an English castle dating from the end of the 11th century and located at Mitford, Northumberland. It is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and a Grade I listed building. The castle is also officially on the Buildings at Risk Register. The Norman motte and bailey castle stands on a small prominence, a somewhat elliptical mound above the River Wansbeck. The selected building site allowed for it to be natural hill scarped and ditched, producing the motte.
Mitford Castle was the first of three seats for the main line of the Mitford family constructed on manor lands. Following the destruction of Mitford Castle, Mitford Old Manor House (nearby and to the northwest) was used from the 16th century until the construction of Mitford Hall in 1828. Mitford Hall stands in an 85-acre (340,000 m2) park to the west of the castle ruins.
This castle has had a very interesting History, further information can be seen here :-
