Healing Journey 4: Feeling a Wee Bit Blue in Little Bay
While in Little Bay Jamaica, I (daveo) deal with the blues despite being in an beautiful location, drinking fresh coconuts, merenge tea, and trying to heal and stay positive in light of this illness while sitting in front of a splendid backdrop of the Caribbean Sea and encouraging myself to stay positive despite the challenges.

A Message To Alva Suckoo And Anthony Eden
Transcript:
This message is primarily for Mr Alva Suckoo and Mr Anthony Eden but I believe the Cayman Islands Government as a whole could equally benefit from what I'm about to say.
While you may claim to have experienced discrimination yourself, Mr Suckoo—and you being a Caymanian and a person of colour, I can imagine you have—I sincerely doubt you've experienced the kind of trauma, violence, ostracism, depression, self-hatred and incredible struggle that so many of our LGBT people have. I understand that you can't empathise with us because of that. So, to you, our problems may be of little importance. A non-issue, so to speak. After all, there are far more pressing matters to tend to. But the mere fact that there are other wrongs to right does not erase our injustices nor invalidate our hardship.
In fact, the reality of the issue at hand is likely far more grim than you could ever comprehend.
LGBT people worldwide are statistically at far greater risk of discrimination, violence, rape or even murder. We are consistently denied service or forcibly removed from restaurants, bars and other public venues, because of our sexual orientation or gender identity. We may be fired or denied employment entirely, because of our sexual orientation or gender identity. In Jamaica, 2013, Human Rights Watch conducted studies that showed more than half of those who identified as LGBT said they had been victims of violence because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. In the US, LGBT teens and young adults have one of the highest rates of suicide attempts, with some studies suggesting that 40% of them have either attempted suicide or experienced suicidal ideation.
Of course, these numbers don't come from our own community because, near as I can tell, no one has ever thought to conduct this kind of research here. However, given the heterocentric culture and widespread, institutionalised homophobia so prevalent not just in our country but across the Caribbean, it's no stretch of the imagination to presume that incidents of bullying, violence, rape, murder and suicide are even more frequent here.
The only reason you don't hear of these stories within your community is because the people who have been at the centre of them have grown accustomed to living in the shadows out of fear. A fear that his marginalised us and driven us largely underground.
All of that aside, if only one person were to be the victim of domestic abuse or workplace harassment or denied medical care on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity, would you not aid them in their time of need, given the chance? Would you, instead, turn to them and apologise for your inaction because there were more important issues to address?
Now, I'm not suggesting you be the Good Samaritan to any and all who come to you with their problems but you have recently been given the opportunity to effect real change for that one person, plus countless more. And it saddens me that one such as yourself, with such political sway and prominence, could turn down that opportunity and, instead, take a stance that is not only highly offensive to the very people you've been elected to support but also impedes our progress in fighting for equality.
Personally, I see my recent appearances on public radio and television as my opportunity to do our country and its citizens, residents and visitors a great service, by being the face and voice that our people have been without for too long. I have made it my personal mission to be an advocate for our local LGBT community—of which I am a part—and its allies—of whom there are many. And I can assure you, this is by no means one man's political agenda. This is only but a small but significant part of a battle for human rights that is being fought the world over by billions.
And if even now, you and the other members of the Legislative Assembly who have taken the same stance, still hold firm to your belief that this is largely a non-issue that Caymanians care little about, then consider this the official beginning of our public outcry. Because I can confidently tell you that although I may be but one person, I represent a great many more. And we refuse to be silenced any longer.

Chelsey & Devon's Beach Wedding at the Hyatt Ziva, Montego Bay Jamaica
Please enjoy our wedding day in Montego Bay, Jamaica at the Hyatt Ziva in April 2017.
It was 95% DIY wedding where we asked our wedding party and family to fly all the decorations and party favours down! Thanks to everyone who came and made our day super special! We owe a lot to our awesome wedding party and family for helping with all the little details! We wanted to capture the day for us to remember and to share with everyone who couldn't make it.
Special thanks to our wedding co-ordinator: Julianne McIntosh who is an absolute rock star at the Hyatt Ziva who made sure we got the beach wedding of our dreams!
Crazy thanks to the makers of this video: Adrian and his team from Lexon Photography who went above and beyond to capture our dream beach wedding!! His DJ also killed the music!! It was everyone's jam that night. Haha. Love Chels & Dev xox

Jamaican Lionfish: A Delicious Solution
The stunning waters off the island of Jamaica are threatened by invasive venomous lionfish. Fortunately for the coastal ecosystem, local fisherman and chefs have teamed up to eliminate the lionfish, one delicious fillet at a time.
