Carlow County Museum Launch of Irish Exhibition Part 1.
A bilingual video of the launch of ‘Scéal na Gaeilge I gCeatharlach 1899- 2014’, the story of the Irish language in Carlow from 1899 – 2014.
Part 2:
A sense of history and pride was palpable in Carlow County Museum on Thursday, 5th June 2014 when the legendary Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh was in town to launch an exhibition tracing the history of over 100 years of the Irish language in Carlow Town. Although no longer a regular on the airwaves as GAA commentator, Ó Muircheartaigh still maintains his popularity and charismatic appeal. A capacity crowd including many from various sporting circles as well as a host of Irish language enthusiasts of all ages turned out for the opening.
Also in attendance at the launch was Nora Welby, national manager of Glór na nGael, who recalled Carlow’s great strides and huge success in the promotion of Irish in the community and thus making the language more popular and more accessible to all regardless of competency or fluency. She noted the town’s annual success since 1970 when Carlow received its first certificate of commendation as well as landing the Glór na nGael national award on two occasions.
Finally and to the traditional strains of the local anthem Follow Me Up To Carlow played by young musicians from the Gaelscoil, Mícheál cut the red, yellow and green ribbons to launch the exhibition entitled “The Story of the Irish language in Carlow for over 100 years”.
The exhibition was compiled by Carlow County Museum in association with Glór Cheatharlach.

Is iomaí cuairt atá tugtha ag an Muircheartach ar Cheatharlach chuig ócáidí a bhain leis an teanga ó labhair sé ag an gcéad chruinniú poiblí a reachtáladh in 1981 chun bunú scoil lánghaeilge a phlé. Mar chomhartha buíochais as a thacaíocht leanúnach bronnadh pictiúir air maisithe le grianghrafanna dá chuairteanna éagsúla ar an mbaile thar na mblianta.
I láthair chomh maith ag an seoladh bhí Nóra Welby, bainisteoir náisiúnta Ghlór na nGael a labhair faoin rath a bhí ar Cheatharlach le blianta fada anuas agus iarrachtaí á chruthú i gcónaí chun an teanga agus cultúr na Gaeilge a chothú, a chaomhnú agus a chur chun cinn i measc an phobail. Dúirt sí go bhfuil ardmheas ar an nGaeilge sa cheantar i láthair na huaire agus go mbaineann sí leis an daonra i gcoitinn cuma cén cumas nó caighdeán líofachta atá acu. Dúirt sí go raibh an t-uafás duaiseanna bainte amach ag Ceatharlach sa chomórtas Ghlór na nGael bliain i ndiaidh bliana agus bhronn sí gradam ar Ghlór Cheatharlach as an tríú háit sa tír do 2013 a ghnothú do phobail lasmuigh den Ghaeltacht. Bhronn sí teastas aitheantais ar an nuachtán Nationalist as poiblíocht leanúnach a thabhairt don Ghaeilge i gCeatharlach.
Ar deireadh agus ceol traidisiúnta á chasadh ag daltaí na Gaelscoile, do ghearr Mícheál an ribín chun an taispeántas a cheiliúrann scéal na Gaeilge i gCeatharlach a sheoladh go hoifigiúil. Beidh an taispeántas ar siúl sa mhúsaem ar Shráid an Choláiste go dti an fómhar. Cead isteach saor agus fáilte roimh chách.

Carlow County Museum 40th Anniversary Part 3
On Wednesday 28th of May 2014 Carlow County Museum officially unveiled a plaque commemorating 40 years since the foundation of Carlow County Museum. It was originally set up by nine members of the Carlow Historical & Archaeological Society (then called the Old Carlow Society) as a community Museum. The nine founder members were: Alec Burns, Michael Dooley, Bill Kelly, Kevin Kennedy, Eddie McDonald, Jim Moran, Seamus Murphy, Brendan Nolan and Pat Purcell. Three of the founder members are alive today.
Carlow County Museum first opened to the public on afternoon of Sunday 2nd December in 1973; this was performed by John Moriarty, Chairman of Carlow County Council who was also an active member of the Society.
In 1979 the Museum moved to the former theatre room of the Town Hall, a space provided by Carlow Town Council.
In 2002 Carlow Town Council took over the operations of the Museum and working in partnership with Carlow Historical & Archaeological Society it undertook the re-development of the Museum. The Carlow County Museum has its new permanent home in the former Presentation Convent on College Street.
The front of the building houses the Carlow Central Library and the Museum is entered through the Carlow Tourist Office. Carlow County Museum has four exhibition galleries; the two largest galleries house the permanent exhibitions of the Museum while the smaller galleries are used for temporary exhibitions.
Carlow County Museum has free admission and is open all year round.

From the foundation of the Gaelic League in 1899 by Michael O’Hanrahan to the Pan Celtic Festivals of 2012 & ’13 the Irish language has grown from strength to strength in Carlow. Boasting two national Glór na nGael wins and 35 years of Eigse - the Carlow Arts Festival, the Irish language is increasingly part of Carlow daily life.

'Mike the man of the Rás '73' by Carlow County Museum
In 2013 Carlow County Museum celebrated the 40th anniversary of Carlow man Mike O'Donaghue winning Ireland's premier race the Rás Tailteann (now An Post Rás) in 1973 by holding a special exhibition in honour of this achievement. Mike is the only Carlow man to have won the Rás and he was the first cyclist from the South East to do so. With his distinctive Carlow tri-colour jersey Mike was one of the most recognisable cyclists of his era. Mike was the first Irish cyclist to have a sponsor, Carlow's famous mineral water company Corcoran & Co. Ltd.
The exhibition was officially launched on Friday May 24th 2013 by Mel Christle, son of Joe Christle, the founder of the Rás. The exhibition launch coincided with Stage 6 of the 2013 An Post Rás stage finish in Carlow Town which was won by Rico Rogers of the Azerbaijan Synergy Baku Cycling Team. This video gives a flavour of the exhibition.

Carlow 1916 Commemorative Stained Glass by Peadar Lamb
Peadar Lamb Documentary on the creation of his 'Carlow 1916 Commemorative Stained Glass' which was unveiled in Carlow County Museum on Thursday 21st July 2016. This piece serves as a lasting legacy of the Carlow Ireland 2016 commemorations and was commissioned by Carlow County Council through its Public Art Working Group and coordinated through the Carlow Ireland 2016 Committee. This innovative and unique contemporary stained glass panel illustrates a Carlow narrative showing some of the key Carlow figures and the role they played in 1916. The piece can be viewed in Carlow County Museum, College St, Carlow town. #Carlow2016

First Day in Carlow, Ireland
Merchant by the Abbey in Carlow
At the opening ceili of the 2015 Follow Me up to Carlow weekend the Abbey Ceili Band played this Corofin Plain Set. MC Syl Bell filled all the gaps in the sets and then called the moves of the dance. The weekend was held in the Seven Oaks Hotel, Carlow town.
