The Carlton Centre Top of Africa
If you want a bird’s-eye view of Johannesburg, the 50-storey Carlton Centre is the place to go. Visitors to the centre can enjoy a panoramic view of the City of Gold from the Top of Africa, as the topmost floor of the building is known: 360 degrees of dense cityscape and outwards towards the countryside and beyond.
The tallest building in Africa and once the tallest building in the southern hemisphere, the Carlton Centre stands 223m high – about 40m shy of featuring on the world’s top 100 skyscrapers list. However this feat of architecture makes the centre one of the must-see Johannesburg attractions. Construction was a lengthy process, beginning in 1967 and ending in 1974, although the centre officially opened in 1973.(Song Title Great Heart Johnny Clegg) Please Subscribe to my page and leave a comment

SOUTH AFRICA: THOUSANDS OF ZULUS MARCH THROUGH JOHANNESBURG
English/Nat
Gunfire and violence erupted Wednesday as thousands of Zulus marched through downtown Johannesburg to protest the unpunished killings of eight people during a similar demonstration three years ago.
Police reported at least three deaths as the Zulu nationalists travelled from black townships outside the city to take part in the march at the central library.
Thousands of Zulus descended on the centre of Johannesburg carrying spears, clubs and shields in Zulu tradition.
Tension between security forces and the demonstrators began to fray as the march reached its peak.
The Zulus were protesting the lack of judicial action following the killings three years ago outside A-N-C headquarters when security guards in the building opened fire on Zulu marchers approaching from the side.
And Wednesday's march wasn't to pass without violence flaring-up.
At the Carlton Centre, a hotel-shopping mall complex in the city centre, onlookers rushed into shops as marchers approached.
Shooting broke out as the rally ended, causing marchers, police and bystanders to dive for cover.
Two people were injured in the gunfire, some of it from automatic weapons, that echoed off the tall downtown buildings.
One man suffered a head wound and said marchers attacked him with a machete, and protesters reportedly knocked over stands set up by hawkers along the street.
There was little doubt that trouble was brewing. As Zulus left for the march from the townships, street barricades were built and burned in clear defiance of the authorities.
Wednesday's march was a relic of long standing animosity between the Zulu-nationalist Inkatha Freedom Party and President Nelson Mandela's African National Congress.
A-N-C officials, including Mandela, have said marchers involved in the March 1994 rally intended to attack the A-N-C building and blamed police for failing to keep them away.
But Inkatha leaders call the killings a massacre and complain that no arrests have been made.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
We shall commemorate this day for generations to come. Justice must be done and also be seen to be done.
SUPER CAPTION: Evans Soslbo, Member of Organising Committee
More than 50 people died during the March 28, 1994, march by Zulus opposing plans for the nation's first all-race election a month later. Most were killed in violence in black townships as marchers headed downtown or in clashes with police.
Zulu leaders want the traditional tribal kingdom in KwaZulu-Natal province to have autonomous powers free of ANC control. Inkatha boycotted the drafting and signing of a new national constitution that denies such autonomy to provincial governments.
