Main Street Carmel through the Arts and Design District
Ryan Dorman walks you from the library to the arts and design district.
Located in the heart of Old Town Carmel, Indiana, the Arts & Design District is the Midwest’s premier arts and design destination. It is home to interior designers, art galleries, showrooms, restaurants, antique stores and a variety of specialty retail shops.

Background:
This area has been part of the redevelopment plan of Mayor Jim Brainard to work with the Carmel Redevelopment Commission to transform Old Town Carmel from a run down and very neglected part of town into the vibrant and thriving Carmel Arts & Design District, while maintaining the area's historic charm. Before the real work could begin on the District, Mayor Brainard invested more than $10 million on adding storm sewers, curbs, sidewalks with brick accents, historic-style street lighting, improved streets and water mains to ensure that the Old Town neighborhood was brought up to Carmel standards. After those upgrades were complete, the redevelopment efforts intensified to bring galleries, unique shops, restaurants and the Indiana Design Center to the Arts & Design District.
To show their commitment to identifying the Old Town area as the Arts & Design District, the City installed archways over the main entrances to the district. The newly created district logo was added to street lights further branding the area and reminding visitors they were enjoying the Carmel Arts & Design District. Eventually, flower baskets, flower boxes at windows, benches, out door sculptures and bump out curb dining complemented the experience in the district.
Throughout the redevelopment of this area, the City has used public private partnerships to encourage investment by the private sector in the area. The City identified the best areas for redevelopment, purchased and combined small lots and combined them and made them ready for development, and created a plan for the area so that the private sector could come in and begin work more easily.
Today, the Carmel Arts & Design District is home to more that 11 distinct galleries, unique shops, boutiques, antique dealers, and restaurants for every palate. The vibrant night life in the District includes a wine tasting experience, live music, neighborhood pubs and even comedy nights.
Residential Options:
While the neighborhood in and around the Arts & Design District continues to thrive, additional residential options have added to the constant vibrancy of the area including condos and apartments above some of the commercial space and along the Monon Greenway, which runs through the heart of the District.
A Sound Investment:
The Arts & Design District continues to grow and offer more and more amenities for residents and visitors. We hope you enjoy this area that has truly been transformed into one of Carmel's most successful redevelopment projects.
Carmel, Indiana
Located directly North of Indianapolis is CNN Money Magazine’s 2012 Best Places to Live in the United States; Carmel, Indiana. This once sleepy town has been revitalized in the past 20 years. Originally founded by Quakers in 1837, Carmel exudes charm. Neighborhoods boast an eclectic range of architecture. Its residents include noteworthy sports team owners, CEO’s, and, at one point, the Vice President of the United States. With one of the highest per-capita incomes in the country, residents are also attracted to Carmel’s school systems, ranked one of the best in the state. It has excellent schools, safe neighborhoods, low taxes and easy commutes. With over 80 roundabouts, the most in any American city, commutes are quick and efficient. The Arts and Design District within Carmel is the Midwest’s premier arts and design destination and a host to interior designers, art galleries, antique stores, restaurants, and unique retail shops. The District presents a multitude of family friendly events throughout the year, making it a great place to play and work. Upscale retailers and restaurants are found throughout the city in addition to attractions such as The Carmel Civic Square, The Carmel Symphony Orchestra, The Palladium, and Clay Terrace Outdoor Mall. Carmel is also a stop on the Monon Trail. What used to be railroad tracks is now a bike trail that is over 15 miles long and runs through downtown Indianapolis.

Kone EcoSpace? Traction Elevator at 26344 Carmel Rancho Blvd. in Carmel, CA
Kone KSS 370 California code compliant fixtures. There was some electrical interference sounds coming from the elevator speakers. This is the first time I have heard electrical interference sounds coming from an elevator. It might have been happening partly because this elevator has a phone. The Call Answered light on the indicator was slightly lit. That might have been why, though it is also possible that it was slightly lit because the light for the capacity text was not perfectly shielded behind the indicator. I am guessing that this is an EcoSpace, but I am not sure if it is an EcoSpace, or a MonoSpace or EcoSystem MR. If this was installed in 2007 or later, this is an EcoSpace. This building looks older, I think this elevator was added on. This building most likely originally had no elevator. I was not expecting a traction elevator here. Year installed: Circa 2007
Carmel-by-the-Sea, Girlfriends Getaway
The sun rose without you this morning. Not to worry; you're on the ultimate women's weekend in Carmel-by-the-Sea. Besides, you've heard the sunsets are spectacular. So ease into it. Toss on the sweats you picked up when you pulled into town, grab the girls and wander down to that white stretch of sand known as Carmel Beach for a friendly fitness stroll. It's a good warm-up before your appointment at one of the day spas in town for a rejuvenating morning of massages, facials and maybe even a mani-pedi before lunch, overlooking the gardens at La Playa Hotel.
After a little more shopping at the Aspen-style Carmel Plaza, you wander out onto Carmel's main shopping street, which rolls through the middle of town. Styled in a most Bavarian tradition, with its gingerbread architecture and floral window boxes, cobbled passages and café dining, this is Ocean Ave., a legendary street the locals once resisted paving.
Today, Ocean Ave. is home to many of some 90 art galleries, as well as clothing boutiques, cafés and bistros, specialty and souvenir shops. Locals and visitors alike know that an entire day can be quickly ransomed by shopping one's way down one side of the long, downhill slope and looping around to the other before it reaches the sand and spills into the ocean.
The ocean-bound boulevard invites beachcombers to take a break from the sun and walk uptown for a snack or change of scenery. But don't forget to cover up; a century-old covenant still restricts bikini-clad shoppers from shocking the streets of Carmel.
While Ocean Ave. has much to offer, a myopic shopper would spend all her time on Main Street, missing out on the labyrinth of side streets and passageways whose offerings are equally rewarding. Such as Dolores St., which bisects Ocean Ave. and has become a haven for art galleries and antique shops of all genres, as well as its own eclectic array of clothing boutiques, bistros and specialty shops. Another artery is Sixth Avenue, whose three-block expanse parallels Ocean Ave. to offer yet another vein of interesting art galleries and restaurants.
Along a valley road that wanders some 15 miles through the verdant terrain, you will encounter three 18-hole golf courses, among them Rancho Cañada, Quail Lodge and the Carmel Valley Ranch. Characterized by warm days and cool nights, the climate, coupled with a course, gravely soil that challenges vines but enhances the flavor in the fruit, creates an ideal environment for growing grapes in what has become one of the finest wine regions in the world.
Not everybody knows that.
Renowned for its coastal splendor, the Monterey County landscape is also dedicated to nearly 40,000 acres of wine grapes and some 75 wineries and growers, whose tasting rooms clustered throughout the valley and in Carmel-by-the-Sea provide testament to the quality of the crush.
With great golf, fine wine and a wonderland of extreme sports and outdoor activities, it's also a great getaway for the guys. Maybe next time.

Main Street Antiques
Main Street Antiques was founded by Melvin and Carla Crockett at 105-A Main Street in Historic downtown Como Mississippi.
Melvin always had an interest in antiques so upon his retirement he set about making his dreams a reality. No matter what period you're looking for, you are likely to find it at Main Street Antiques.
When we were setting up our cameras I had the opportunity to browse the store and many of the gems he had in there brought back memories from my childhood. There were antique toys I could remember playing with, Tonka trucks built with actual metal, old Premium saltine cracker tins, and so much more.
The history alone, just walking through the store, you could feel, see, and almost hear the past. One of the coolest things to me was an old 1949 television set in perfect condition, knobs and all. He also had a sign that came from a store with the two digit switch board phone number!
Antiques are not the only thing that Mr. Crockett sells in Main Street Antiques. He has a number of items from vendors all over Mississippi and Arkansas. There were some beautiful crafts, books from local authors, food items, and candles...all from our beautiful creative state.
Where do you get such beautiful antiques?
Melvin told us that he finds his antiques at estate sells, word of mouth, customers bringing in items. He also said that they have found a lot of their items right there in Como Mississippi.
The fun part of it is the find, looking for stuff and finding different things that people like. - Melvin Crockett.
Mr. Crockett shared with us that they are thinking about expanding into another building for the larger items which well allow them to bring in more vendors.
There was one item in particular that hung up in Melvin's store that held the most fascination for me. It was a tricycle that was at least 70 years old. Mr. Crockett told us the story behind it: It was brought brand new for my brother and was handed down to me. We rode that thing many a mile. It's not for sale. I just wanted to keep it out of the weather. Every time I look at it I think of him.
If you love antiques, history, or items made in Mississippi then head down to see Melvin Crockett at Main Street Antiques in beautiful Como Mississippi.

Karen Brown's Lincoln Green Inn, Carmel, California
Once you happen upon (discovered) the adorable English cottages of the Lincoln Green Inn you won't want to leave. This adorable inn has no public buildings; it is simply comprised of four perfectly charming white cottages with green trim tucked in a beautiful English garden. You feel like you have your own private home in the Cotswold's of England. There is a Shakespearian theme which transcends throughout the inn as each cottage is aptly named Friar Tuck, Robin Hood, Maid Marian and Little John and each is decorated in a traditional English style with cozy antiques and floral patterns on the bedspreads and curtains. The cottages are fully equipped with everything you need from kitchenettes and flat panel TVs, to warm fireplaces and continental breakfast delivered to your door each morning. Three of the cottages have one bedroom and Robin Hood is larger with two bedrooms. Come stay for a few days or a few weeks as the cottages are also for rent by the month. A lovely wine and cheese service is offered in the afternoons in the garden. Lincoln Green Inn has a great quiet location on Carmel Point, walking distance to the gorgeous River Beach and Carmel Beach and about 10 blocks from Ocean Avenue, Carmel's prime shopping street. Like many hotels and restaurants in Carmel, pets are welcome at this lovely Inn.
