The Convent of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (Portuguese: Convento da Ordem do Carmo) is a former-Roman Catholic convent located in Lisbon, Portugal. The medieval convent was ruined during the sequence of the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, and the destroyed Gothic Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (Portuguese: Igreja do Carmo) on the southern facade of the convent is the main trace of the great earthquake still visible in the old city.

The earthquake struck during mass on All Saints Day, causing stone and rubble to collapse on Carmo's congregates.
The roofless scaffolding over what was once the church's altar now arches over an archaeological ruins museum.
The Gothic architecture and Roman symbols such as the Latin cross, damaged rose window, and Muse carvings, add symbolic allure.
Among featured ruins are ancient South American mummies, Gothic tombstones, a Jasper carving of Holy Mary, and other ancient Roman relics.

Museu Arqueológico do Carmo
O Museu Arqueológico do Carmo é uma das Ruinas mais impressionantes de Portugal. Se trata de um antigo convento que sofreu fortes abalos no sismo de 1755, apesar dos grande danos sofrido pelo terremoto boa parte da estrutura permanceu de pé.
Alguns pequenso restauros foram realizados pelos monges logo depois da destruição, porém, a maioria foi interrompida e assim ficou o convento como um retrato da força do terremoto.
Hoje ele abriga um museu, na nave que não possui teto, ficaram algumas peças antigas que vieram de outros lugares de Portugal.
No interior do Museu tem múmia, o túmulo de D.fernando I que foi uma figura importantíssima para a História do País, enfim, é um passeio muito legal.

El Museo Nacional de Arqueología de Lisboa contiene la colección arqueológica más importante de Portugal. El museo se encuentra situado en el edificio contiguo al Monasterio de los Jerónimos. El museo fue fundado en 1893 por José Leite de Vasconcelos y tiene objetos que van desde el Paleolítico hasta la Edad Media. En sus inicios su nombre fue Museo Etnográfico Portugués.
Colecciones:
Entre las piedras, objetos de oro, monedas y vasijas a nosotros nos gustaron especialmente las salas dedicadas a Egipto y al Islam. Si habéis visitado Egipto estas salas os traerán muchos recuerdos. En ellas se puede ver desde momias reales de personas y animales hasta una colección de fotografías antiguas impresionantes.
¿Merece la pena?
Dado que se encuentra junto al Monasterio de los Jerónimos, si tenéis tiempo suficiente sí que es interesante entrar. Si es domingo por la mañana la entrada es gratis y sobran las razones.

In 1389 the convent of Our Lady of Carmen was founded in Lisbon.
In 1755, during the great earthquake, followed by a fire, the famous Carmelite temple is turned into ruins.
In 1834 several reconstruction attempts were completely frustrated when the liberals dissolved religious orders and all the catholic temples became government property.
Since 1864 an archaeological museum is exhibited among its ruins.
