Torwood (Tappoch) Broch
This Iron Age dwelling was excavated from a large mound in 1864. It is one of the best examples of a lowland Broch, and dates from around 500 BC. It is situated on a now tree covered hill at Torwood, near Falkirk.
Broch`s were circular stone defensive dwellings which rose to several storys high.
The walls at ground level are 20 feet thick, and the surviving structure is about 7 feet high.
Sadly it has deteriorated greatly since excavation, and has not been cared for. This is sad for such an old surviving structure which is part of Scotland`s history.
Dun Telve Iron Age Broch Glenelg Scotland
Pictures taken at Dun Telve Iron Age Broch, Glenelg, Scotland in August. The Broch is in great condition considering its age, about the best on the mainland of Scotland, considering that its around 2000 years. Its in quite a remote location, but it is so worth the drive, noting that the views are excellent on the way too !

A Journey through Scotland's Past: The Age of Stone
Dr Ann MacSween and Dr Kirsty Millican, two of our experts in Neolithic archaeology, present a lecture on Scotland’s Age of Stone. This talk explores the different types of monuments which can still be found in northern and southern Scotland, how to recognise them, and how we use this archaeological evidence to build a picture of the life of early farming communities. They also talk about the work we do to protect such ancient monuments, and explain how you can get involved in looking after Scotland’s Neolithic archaeology.
This is the first in a series of talks we're holding in 2017 to mark the year of History, Heritage and Archaeology. Next up, on 23rd February, we'll be looking at Scotland's Age of Bronze. Find out more at

Friendly beep from overtaking car Strath Brora, Sutherland
Cycling on a rural road in the Scottish Highlands. A rare car overtakes me with a friendly beep. This is in Strath Brora between Rogart and Golspie in Sutherland.
Michael Ross and family walking in Hoy
This is Michael on a day out with his family at 15 years old, the age he was at the time of Shamsuddin Mahmood's murder. He's clearly not the tall man police were looking for, the crimewatch episode ( although despite the difference in descriptions by witnesses to two separate incidents, they depicted both with the same actor as if they did. This was inaccurate. Discussion on the case here is turned off, but you can share your thoughts respectfully here -
