Carnarvon Gorge - Part 1
Part 1 of our Carnarvon Gorge trip in October 2018. Stayed at Takarakka Bush Resort for the first half of our trip. Hiked up to Big Bend and came back doing all the side trails except the lower gorge, we finished that part off the following day. In part 2 of the trip, we headed out to the Mt Moffat section of the gorge for some remote camping and 4 wheeling.

Carnarvon Gorge & Takarakka Bush Resort
After an estimated 15 years since our last visit, we headed back to Carnarvon Gorge, this time staying at the nearby Takarakka Bush Resort.
We generally don't do people too well, preferring the isolated camping that our wonderful country offers, but to get to experience something as magnificent as Carnarvon Gorge, sacrifices need to be made, thanks to the baffling decision by QPWS to throttle back their own camping support of such a magical destination, many years ago.
It was hardly an ordeal, with Takarakka being such a well run and organised campsite... still, being able to hear your neighbour fart in their tent is not really something we are used to... or plan to desensitise to.
There are some exquisite walks to do along the gorge, so sometimes you have to grin and bear it...put it on the list if you have never been there.

Carnarvon Gorge, Qld, Australia
One of Australia's best kept secrets, situated approx. 700kms NW of Brisbane (by road). Carnarvon National Park consists of many walks and features including Moss Garden, The Amphitheatre, The Art Gallery, Wards Canyon, Wurrumba Gorge, Mickey Creek Gorge and a great climb to Boolimba Bluff. Most of the walks are under 14km and include fun and interesting creek crossings.

Platypus and Wild Pigs!! - Carnarvon Gorge, Australia
Enjoy these playful Platypus in Carnarvon Gorge, Australia.
They are very hard to film, because they are so shy and wary of any different movement or shapes and things.
These wild pigs are also very wary of any strangers in their territory, as you will see!
Carnarvon Gorge - Part 2
Part 2 of our trip we headed from the lush area of the gorge mouth back to Injune and out to the remote Mt Moffat Section. Great spot. No one else around except our crew. More scenery and spectacular naturally sculpted sandstone formations. Bit of outlaw Aussie history rolled into it as well. Brilliant spot.

Australia Adventures - Outback Day 5 - Carnarvon National Park - Kangaroo
This was certainly one of our favourite days in the Outback.
We hiked the over 14 km around the Carnarvon Gorge. It was never treacherous, in fact it was splendid due to the flora, foliage, and fauna surrounding us.
We indulged in lunch when we finally made it back to the car.
Our thrilling adventure did not end there...
Next we jumped into an absolutely freezing rock pool at the Gorge, chancing to bump into a friendly eel. Truly, could it get any better?
Carnarvon Gorge National Park
Travel Video - Hiking and camping in Carnarvon Gorge located in Central Queensland, Australia. This national park is a pleasant oasis in an otherwise predominately barren landscape. The crystal clear Dawson river and Aboriginal artwork were definitely a highlight. Enjoy!
- Total length of hike: 25km roundtrip.
- Camping at Big Bend: $6 per. person/per. night.
- Tip: If you are only planning on doing a day trip, we would suggest to walk as far as you can or want to go along the main track. Then on the way back you will be able to allocate your time wisely to stop into all the beautiful side tracks. This is the best way to ensure you will see everything this spectacular park has to offer.
