Skiing starts from the middle of the village, while those who want to go further afield can purchase the Three Valleys area ski pass offering access to the network of runs around Val Thorens, Les Menuires, Méribel, Mottaret, Courchevel and La Tania.
The new funitel Le Bouquetin carries 2,000 skiers per hour between Val Thorens and the Belleville valley. HOW MUCH? - Ski Val Thorens in France on a Budget - Ultimate Family Holiday Planning Guide
Located in the Three Valleys ski area, at an altitude of 2,300 metres above sea level, Val Thorens is the highest ski resort in Europe. It has 600 Kilometers of connected Ski Runs, the Three Valleys ski area is considered the best in the world. I've heard that it has outstanding night life and après ski scene, but we travelled as a family so this aspect of #ValThorens isn't really relevant.
In this #SkiReviews video, I'll show you how much I paid for each aspect of the trip including the journey out there.
The closest airports to Val Thorens are Chambery, Lyon And Geneva, with transfer times of 2 hours, 2 hours and 45 minutes, and 3 hours and 15 minutes respectively. We drove directly from Geneva to Val Thorens as for four people it's generally a cheaper and more convenient option than the group transfers. Easyjet fly multiple daily flights whereas Chambery flights to the South West of the UK are only on twice per week, so a lot less flexibility and certainly more expensive if you want to go #Skiing
There are 9 black runs, 30 red runs, 35 blue runs, and 11 green runs in the ski area of Val Thorens.
We have been skiing as a family many times before but only in Les Arcs, France. This resort is outstanding in all areas, but we felt that we needed to see what other ski resorts have to offer and decided on Val Thorens after much research.
Our criteria is very simple, Ski in / Ski out. With two young children it makes perfect sense to take this option. Although it may seem more expensive, you get the most out of the holiday with having many skiing sessions throughout the say. With younger children, when they get tired, it's game over and you may find yourself travelling back to the foot of the mountain and unlikely to venture out again that day. At a ski in / ski out resort you can relax at the hotel and then when you have recharged you batteries, you can go back out. This definitely works well with kids.
My overall impression is that we prefer Les Arcs over Val Thorens. Val Thorens demographic is a lot younger with many teenagers, naturally wanting to have a good time and go drinking and enjoy the aprés ski. Also, Val Thorens is a lot busier than Les Arcs on the piste. Let's be frank, it's much better to ski on wide empty slopes than congested ones.
Overall we spent around £4,000 for the trip. There were four days skiing and two days travelling. Base cost (as described in the video) was around £2,900. The additional money was spent on lunch and evening meal costs, drinks and other entertainments and treats. As you'd expect, the prices are high in all ski resorts.

Val Thorens 2300 Les 3 Vallées Fafalafrite
Vive le ski à Val Thorens 2300 Les 3 Vallées
COURCHEVEL - SKI RESORT FRANCE (TOUGHEST AND LONGEST VALLEY)
Courchevel is at one end of the world’s largest lift-linked ski area, the Trois Vallées, which has 600km of pistes and 166 lifts. With many north-facing slopes, the snow in the Courchevel valley is usually some of the best in the whole ski area, and there’s terrain to suit everyone from beginner to expert.
The local slopes comprise 150km of runs, of which 23 are green, 35 blue, 32 red and 10 black. There are also free lifts for beginners at most of the resort villages. The whole Trois Vallées lift system has lots of fast gondolas and chairlifts, for speeding around the huge area, which while catering for all standards is particularly good for mileage-hungry intermediates.
Courchevel’s six distinctly separate resort villages are linked by lifts, pistes and a road which winds its way up through Saint Bon, Courchevel Le Praz and Courchevel Moriond to the highest base, simply known as Courchevel. On the way it bypasses roads leading to Courchevel Village and Courchevel La Tania. All villages are also linked by an efficient and frequent free bus service.
Courchevel Le Praz is an old, rustic village at heart. The main landmark is the ski jumping hill, built for the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics and still used today, in summer as well as winter. A gondola and a fast chairlift ascend from here to different parts of the slopes. The base area has been remodelled for 2019/20, with a new 10 person gondola replacing the old four-seater, and a two-level 500-place underground car park. The new lift connects Le Praz to Courchevel 1850 in under six minutes.
Next in altitude comes Courchevel La Tania, a good-value, family-friendly base from which to explore the slopes of its higher Trois Vallées neighbours. The resort was built for the 1992 Winter Olympics, and at 1,400m is about the lowest purpose-built French resort there is. Its wood-clad buildings sit comfortably in a pretty woodland setting – quite a contrast to the bleakness of many higher-altitude French ski stations.
Courchevel Village, set off the main road, is a quiet backwater, with a mixture of individual chalets and bigger block-like buildings and few facilities. It’s linked via the fast 10-seater Grangettes gondola or a fast chairlift to Courchevel 1850, and blue runs lead back into the village.
Although Courchevel Moriond is on the main road, the traffic isn’t intrusive and the village centre around the main lift base (a gondola reached by an escalator) has been attractively developed, and is lined with varied shops, restaurants and bars. Opposite the lift another much longer three-stage covered escalator serves a big area of chalets lower down the hill. There is a huge watersports centre, Aquamotion, just below here and a toboggan run, “Moriond Racing”. A new chairlift and blue run link this area, which includes a new hotel, L’Ecrin Blanc, to Courchevel 1850 for winter 2019/20.
The highest village, Courchevel – aka 1850 – is also by far the biggest, spreading a good way up the hillsides. It’s the prestige place to stay, where the rich Russians and Parisians head to be seen and to flash their cash. It's also the main lift hub with gondolas from the centre heading up in three different directions, and mainly easy pistes back down.

Val Thorens 2018 & 2019 Guide 4k
Located in the Three Valleys ski area, at an altitude of 2,300 metres above sea level, Val Thorens is the highest ski resort in Europe.
Thanks to its 600 Kilometers of connected Ski Runs, the Three Valleys ski area is considered the best in the world. Couple that with the outstanding night life and après ski scene, and Val Thorens is probably the best ski resort in the world.
In this video, I’ll show you the most important things you need to know before booking a vacation in Val Thorens,
And if you stick around until the end of the video, I’ll give you some great tips that will help you make better decisions and save money. How do you get to Val Thorens?
The closest airports to Val Thorens are Chambery, Lyon And Geneva, with transfer times of 2 hours, 2 hours and 45 minutes, and 3 hours and 15 minutes respectively.
But do be aware, French Holiday season kicks in on the Saturday of the 2nd week of February and 2nd week of March, and massive traffic jams may cause transfer times to extend to as long as eight hours, so planning ahead is vital!
If you’re coming on the train, the nearest train stop is in the town of Moutier, from where you’ll need to take a 1 hour bus journey to Val Thorens.
Overall, there are 9 black runs, 30 red runs, 35 blue runs, and 11 green runs in the ski area of Val Thorens.
For intermediate to advanced skiers, I recommend buying the 3 Valley skips which cost 300 euros for 6 days and are worth every penny.
Take note that the 3 Valleys ski area has a shorter ski season than Val Thorens, which spread from around December 10th to April 20th each year.
Val Thorens has one of the longest ski seasons around, beginning in mid-November, and lasting until early May, after the famous Dutch Week Festival.
This video was shot on April 15th.
So, before we wrap up, here are my ratings for Val Thorens:
For snowboarders, it’s a 9, Together with the 3 Valleys there are endless possibilities for snowboarders. The fact that along the snow park there is a drug lift, damages the otherwise amazing 10 score.
For skiers for all levels: it’s a 9. The fact that the runs in Val Thorens itself are above the tree line make the view a little boring.
For freestylers, also a 9, again just because of the drug lift in the snow park.
For free riders, a perfect 10. Together with the 3 valleys there is indeed the largest area of off-piste than anywhere else in the world.
For Night life: another 10. Many packed bars for every taste, where you can party in a packed place with energy from 4 pm ‘til 4 am, every night.
Après ski: it’s a 10. The Foley Douce is the best après ski bar in the world today
Resort Charm: 7.5. The absence of trees makes it a little bit boring, but the many chairlifts and little ski runs crossing the village, gives it a unique charm all of its own.
My total, overall score for Val Thorens sits at a 9, and for young people and party lovers it is probably the best ski resort in the world today.
My bonus tips for Val Thorens:
Because Val Thorens is so high, it takes time to the body to acclimate and you are likely to feel exhausted for the first 2 days.
My recommendation is not to party hard on these nights if at all because you will have little energy, and if you drink you will probably suffer quite a harsh hangover.
The reason you haven’t seen nightlife shots in this video is because
The 2nd tip is not to come to Val Thorens by car, as there are only 3 designated parking garages that cost 70 euros per week. Everything you need is within easy walking distance, and on-street parking will land you a ticket, so it’s unlikely you’ll need the car for the duration of your visit anyway.
If you liked this video you can watch my videos on Les Menuires and l'Alpe d'Huez and other ski resorts.
