Hiroshima Castle || Travel Japan
#Hiroshimacastle in #Japan is a typical flat castle that was constructed by Mouri Terumoto, who was one of the most significant servants (Godairou) of Hideyoshi Toyotomi. Fukushima family and later Asano family lived there during the Edo era. This castle tower was designated as National Treasure in 1931 (Showa 6). It was destroyed by atomic bomb. Later, the exterior of the castle was renovated in 1958 (Showa 33). In 1989 (Heisei 1st), the inside was restored. Today, it has turned into a history museum featuring Samurai culture.
A castle that has seen tragedy and violence now offers tranquil views of Hiroshima
Although the castle that now overlooks Hiroshima City is a replica built in 1958, the original fortress has a history spanning centuries. Built in the late 1500s, it predates the city itself.
The castle is now a museum that records the history of the city prior to the atomic bombing and is a faithful representation of the structure it replaced.
Quick Facts
It is also known as Carp Castle
Hiroshima developed as a castle town, whereby the castle was both the physical and economical center of the city. Built in 1589 by the powerful feudal lord Mori Terumoto, Hiroshima Castle was an important seat of power in Western Japan. While it was spared the demolishment that many other castles met during the Meiji Restoration, like the rest of the city, Hiroshima Castle was destroyed by the atomic bomb in 1945.
The foundations of the castle are 12.4 meters high, and the castle itself is another 26.6 meters high
Hiroshima Castle is a relatively rare flat plains castle; most castles in Japan are built on high ground
The castle grounds are on the very edge of the blast area of the atomic bomb that fell on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. Although it did not feel the full force of the explosion, shockwaves destroyed the lower struts and supports of the castle, causing the building to collapse.
The style of the new castle stays close to the original, but it employs contemporary building techniques. The keep at the top has a balcony running outside, offering panoramic views of the city and surrounding area.
Three special trees
The castle did not survive the bombing, but three trees did. Inside the castle walls you can find a holly, eucalyptus, and willow tree, which were only between 740 and 910 meters from the center of the blast.
These iconic trees are now symbols of the city's strength and ability to survive and flourish even after a truly devastating event.
Great views, amazing history
The castle, which was built in a very strategic position, was once surrounded by two moats—one of which survives—fed by the nearby Ota River, which in turn surrounds the castle on three sides. The strategic location now gives tourists a great view of the city and surrounding area.

Japan Trip (2018) - Chapter 3: Hiroshima (4K 60FPS)
(As usual, you can follow my trip's progress on my blog ➡️
I have finally reached Hiroshima. I've waited a whole year for this! This was the most emotional moment of my whole trip. Years of history were showered at me at every moment, it was really hard to take it all in at once! I'm glad I got to see all of it with my own eyes!
The first area I visit is the Hiroshima Peace Park area. Many structures from the atomic bomb were destroyed, but the Atomic Bomb Dome still remains. It was an incredible sight to see, with rubbles still lying on the ground.
After that, I make my way to the Children's Peace Monument. This statue acts as a symbol for a peaceful future. Next to it is the Flame of Peace. This flame will continue to burn until all nuclear bombs have disappeared from the earth. People pray and drop flowers at the cenotaph for the A-bomb victims every day. The Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims is also close to this structure.
From the park, I decide to take a boat to Miyajima through the world heritage route. You can see many old roads that are still up even after the A-bomb dropped.
When I got to Miyajima, I went straight to the Itsukushima Shrine's torii gate. Usually, during low tide, you can walk to the gate. I was lucky and catched it during the medium-to-low tide. I got to walk close to the gate itself. There was water up to my knees and then it seemed as if it all just disappeared at one point! Words cannot describe the feeling, if you get the chance it is truly an experience to do at least once in a lifetime!
Another great activity to do at Miyajima is climbing Mt. Misen. Let me tell you, the climb up was a lot rougher compared to Mt. Wakakusa! The reward is that you get an incredible view of Miyajima and Hiroshima from the top!
Hiroshima was probably the most emotional place I've visited in Japan. Just watching the video again made me shed a few tears, not going to lie! Let me know what you think!
Enjoy the video!
Final stop: Osaka, the water city!
