Franklin County Seafood Workers Meet in the Annex to Discuss the Bay and Oyster Hatchery Potential
Franklin County Seafood Workers Association members met on September 30th, 2013 to discuss various issues regarding the extremely marginal oyster harvesting conditions on Apalachicola Bay. An overwhelming majority of the 70+ harvesters report that their daily harvest is less than two 60 pound bags of oysters per day. David Barber, of Barber and Sons Seafood dealers in Eastpoint, FL. reports that his seafood house is only averaging 60 to 80 bags brought in per day. Although the Apalachicola Bay oyster harvest has been declared a Nation Fisheries Disaster, no funding assistance has been forthcoming to supplement harvesters income by reshelling the Bay, something that has been recommended by University of Florida researchers, among others. Nor has their been any assistance identified for oyster harvesters that would enable them to refrain from harvesting for a living, and request a full closure of the Bay. Gulf Coast Workforce Board is working on two grant applications that may help in this regard. A main topic of discussion was the focus by DACS (Florida Department of Agriculture) and others towards leasing the Bay for oyster aquaculture activities, something that has proven unsuccessful in the past, and would currently require a financial investment beyond the reach of most oyster harvesters. However, oyster hatcheries aquaculture, which has also been much discussed, drew broad support from the membership. They voted to bring the idea before the Franklin County Commission with consideration of the Lombardi Seafood Park as an operations site to be run by the FCSWA volunteers. Members were also encouraged to go to the State's Department of Employment Opportunity website and register as job seekers, since currently Franklin County ranks very low in unemployment. This is because a significant portion of the workforce in Franklin is self-employed, such as the oyster harvesters, so their unemployment is not reflected in the unemployment figures during periods of Bay closure, or lack of work.

In January 2015, RedRover Responders volunteers braved long hours and winter storms to help more than one hundred cats on St. George Island, off the coast of Florida. The group of volunteers, in partnership with other feral cat groups, trapped 103 cats, and provided them with vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery and basic care until they were later released.
