Hiking & Hermits in El Valle and Carrascoy Regional Park Murcia
El Valle and Carrascoy Regional Park is the ‘green lung’ of Murcia. Less than an hour’s drive from the busy beach resorts of Costa Calida, you will find cicadas rather than cocktails in a landscape brimming with opportunities to discover and connect with nature. And perhaps you might also discover yourself! With more than 600 species of plants to enjoy and shady caves to explore, El Valle is a great part of Spain for hiking and contemplating life. In this guest video, Fiona Steggles took her family to experience the silence of the 5th century hermits on an early morning hike in the park, and shares a little of her experience…..

The Regional Park El Valle and Carrascoy is a Protected Natural Area of the Region of Murcia whose mountain ranges constitute a natural and historical border between the Guadalentín Valley, through which the famous Huerta de Murcia extends, and the Campo de Cartagena, with the Mar Menor as a backdrop.
Its natural values are characterized by housing a Mediterranean forest repopulated in the 50's in the Valley area and preserved naturally in Carrascoy, where plant diversity is high, especially among shrub plants, and the presence of protected animals, such as raptors .
Its strategic location has favored for centuries an important human and cultural occupation, which is manifested in various constructions and archaeological sites.
This is my second attempt to climb up the mountain to visit this ruined castle but from a different approach.

Murcia (/ˈmʊərsiə/, also US: /ˈmɜːrʃ(i)ə/,[3][4][5] Spanish: [ˈmuɾθja] (About this soundlisten)) is a city in south-eastern Spain, the capital and most populous city of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, and the seventh largest city in the country, with a population of 447,182 inhabitants in 2018 (about one third of the total population of the Region). The population of the metropolitan area was 689,591 in 2010. It is located on the Segura River, in the Southeast of the Iberian Peninsula, noted by a climate with hot summers, mild winters, and relatively low precipitation.
Murcia was founded by the emir of Cordoba Abd ar-Rahman II in 825 with the name Mursiyah (Arabic: مرسية). It is now mainly a services city and a university town. Highlights for visitors include the Cathedral of Murcia and a number of baroque buildings, renowned local cuisine, Holy Week procession works of art by the famous Murcian sculptor Francisco Salzillo, and the Fiestas de Primavera (Spring Festival).
The city, as the capital of the comarca Huerta de Murcia is called Europe's orchard due to its long agricultural tradition and its fruit, vegetable, and flower production and exports.
Murcia is located near the center of a low-lying fertile plain known as the huerta (orchard or vineyard) of Murcia. The Segura River and its right-hand tributary, the Guadalentín, run through the area. The city has an elevation of 43 metres (141 ft) above sea level and its municipality covers approximately 882 square kilometres (341 sq mi).
The best known and most dominant aspect of the municipal area's landscape is the orchard. In addition to the orchard and urban zones, the great expanse of the municipal area is made up of different landscapes: badlands, groves of Carrasco pine trees in the precoastal mountain ranges and, towards the south, a semi-steppe region. A large natural park, the Parque Regional de Carrascoy y el Valle, lies just to the south of the city.

Murcia on kaupunki Kaakkois-Espanjassa ja Murcian itsehallintoalueen pääkaupunki. Kaupungin väkiluku on noin 441 000 Metropolialueen (Murcia–Cartagena) väkiluku on noin 730 000. Murcia sijaitsee Segurajoen varrella.
Murciassa järjestetään vuosittain monia eri juhlallisuuksia, joista tunnetuin on Murcian katolinen pääsiäisviikko. Murcian pääsiäisviikko on tunnettu kautta Espanjan.
Real Casino de Murcia on kuitenkin vaikuttava nähtävyys sisätilojensa arkkitehtuurin takia. Murcia on maurien perustama. Myöhemmin Alfonso X liitti sen Kastiliaan.

SIERRA ESPUÑA
WALKS IN SPAIN
Sierra Espuña Murcia Spain.
There are many footpaths in the Espuña but not clearly marked. At the visitor center you can pick up a map but very basic. In the car park there are some notice boards with three routes to walk. We parked at one of the many viewpoints and set off following the markings on the rocks. We passed many people while on the walk, some running, with dogs and families. The higher we walked the cooler it got and the path was patchy. Once at the summit, we took photographs and video and returned back to the car. We didn’t see any wild animals on this walk but you can see mountain goats and wild boar. I added some photographs of the goats from another walk.
