The Galty Mountains - Na Gaibhlte
A day out on the Galty Mountains from the Glen of Aherlow side. Beginning at Clydagh Bridge and cross the forest at Drumleagh to Knocknanuss. Follow the spur up to Slievecushnabinnia until you hit the dry stone wall [red sandstone]. The wall is the Limerick/Tipperary border. Turn left and follow the wall up onto Galtymore Mountain - a double peak with a white celtic cross on the second peak from this side. There are great views from here to the south into Cork and across to the Knockmealdown Mountains and the Waterford border. Looking north you have the Glen of Aherlow and Lough Curra directly below. Your next target is the coll below Galtybeg. From here you can take in Galtybeg if the weather is clear or contour around Galtybeg to the north side heading for a coll below Glenhabinnia. If you do climb Galtybeg the views east a spectacular and well worth it. Cush is a last climb thrown in for good measure and it also avoids the steep descent into the valley and the hassle of private land. After Cush you will come to a forest boundary. Turn left and on down to the road and back to the car park - well worth waiting for good weather - took me three years to get a day like this!! Dunboy Castle deadly siege 1603 and Beara brutality (history bite)
Dunboy castle the setting of a deadly siege in 1603 where Crown's forces commenced a campaign of utter brutality throughout the Beara peninsula to rid the world of Gaelic Ireland.
It was also a land the English Crown were keen to subjugate as they looked to stamp out all resistance after the siege of Kinsale. In order to do this, the Crown's forces unleashed slaughter and mayhem in a campaign of terror against not just the soldiers but also the Gaelic people's of Beara.
Donal Cam O'Sullivan Beara was a big threat and was one of the top priorities to be eradicated and Dunboy castle was the number one target. Join me as I talk about the horrible events leading up to the epic march of Donal Cam and his followers.

Barley Lake - Glengarriff
Barley Lake is a glacial corrie lake just outside Glengarriff. It is well worth a visit and can be accessed by road or as an exhilarating cycle or walk! A very steep and winding road brings you up above all but the highest parts of the mountains where you can park your car and head across the countryside till you get to the lake. It is a very impressive sight to behold.
