Naxxar cart ruts, Malta
Walking along a long, continuous pair of Malta's mysterious prehistoric cart ruts in Naxxar, 13th March, 2016. Cart ruts are common in areas of exposed rock in Malta and are thought to date back to Roman or even Punic times. Their true source or purpose is unknown.
Malta's 'Cart-Ruts' - a New Theory
A substantial part of the surface of the Maltese islands (Malta and Gozo) is covered by two strata of exposed hard coralline limestone that formed under the sea around 30 and 5 million years ago, before the islands were raised up by colliding intercontinental plates. Much of this limestone is covered by strange man-made double channels with a gauge of around 1.4 metres - so-called ‘Cart-Ruts’. The purpose and age of these has been much-discussed, with many falling back on the default position that they were indeed caused by the passage of carts. David Anderson went to Malta on holiday with his wife in September 2019, and visited and filmed at two of the major and still relatively intact such sites. In this film he demonstrates what he found at Naxxar Gap, which led him to propose a new theory. This is that they were deliberately carved in order to catch (scarce) rainwater and divert it down to settlements below, with an important supplementary role. This was to provide basins or ponds in which to grow suitable vegetables aquaponically, fertilised by cow dung and rotting waste. He suggests these were developed to grow vines of the Cucurbit family, such as melons, cucumbers and pumpkins; this would have converted otherwise useless barren ground into a special form of aquaponic arable land for growing both summer and winter vegetables.
Dr Anderson suggests that they were cut by neolithic Man using a ‘slide car’ hauled by a bullock. A slide car consists of two long sturdy poles kept parallel by a halter over the animal’s neck, and cross-struts lower down, weighted down with heavy stones, with sharp rock cutters fixed to their ends. Dragged along by the bovine he suggests they were used first to cut through the hard weathered limestone surface, to the softer unweathered limestone below. He suggests that in successive passages individual ruts were reamed out to different depths according to the complementary needs of water drainage to the villages and fields below, and with one of a pair leading into hydroponic culture basins or 'pondlets' in which the cucurbit vines, fertilised by dung, could grow and spread out over the adjacent limestone surface. The fact that at least one pair of ruts in Malta extends below the current sea level suggests that they may even extend back to the time of the last ice age.

The Lost Cart-Ruts of Ancient Malta and Gozo - Ta' Cenc, Gozo
Explore ancient Malta and Gozo in March 2020 with Megalithomania visiting Ħaġar Qim and many other temples, cart ruts, hypogeums and much more. We will have private access to many sites and will witness the Equinox Sunrise at Mnajdra Temple. Details here: Hugh Newman investigates the mysterious cart-ruts on the Mediterranean island of Gozo that probably date to the neolithic period. They are parallel grooves that often continue for great distances and sometimes go in to the sea. Their purpose is still unclear, but this video looks at two of the sites on the island and some of the theories that surround them.

Cart Ruts Explored
In 2013 we toured the islands of Malta and Gozo videoing the temples, the various megaliths and the main topic of this film, the mysterious cart ruts. Little is known about why they are spread all over Malta, in this film we show you why the mainstream theories are pretty weak and give some alternative explanations.
They are also found in many places around the world, from Mexico, India, Brazil, Turkey and sites all over Europe so they could be evidence of an ancient and global civilization in our past.

Mysterious Malta Cart Ruts – up in the hills!
Exploring the mysterious cart ruts of Malta. These ones are at Naxxar Gap, where the Victoria Lines (a wall the British built across the north end of Malta in the 1870s) pass near the town of Mgarr. What is going on with these ancient tracks so far up in the hills, at practically the highest point on the island? (Sorry about the wind noise. There was a stiff breeze blowing.)
Mysterious Malta Cart Ruts – running into the sea!
Exploring the mysterious cart ruts of Malta. These ones, at the town of Marsaxlokk, run into the sea, suggesting that they were created long, long ago, before the last ice age. I stumbled on some other ruts as well (at the end of the video) around the other side of the bay.

Enigma Variations - Clapham Junction Cart Ruts (Roman Malta 6)
An Enigma with many variations. Cart ruts are long parallel grooves cut into the rock that abound on rocky surfaces on the island of Malta. It is difficult to establish when and why this phenomenon originated. Archaeologists do not agree on their provenance. Some say that most of the cart ruts originated in Roman times, others contend that they are earlier and pre-date even the Phoenicians, going back to the Bronze Age. All schools of thought cite compelling reasons for their case. The largest concentration of cart ruts can be found in the area that has meanwhile been dubbed 'Clapham Junction', on the Rabat-Dingli plateau, about half way between Verdala Palace and Dingli Cliffs.
In the same area one can find extensive Roman quarries and also the complex of caves called Għar il-Kbir. These caves may have been inhabited by local farmers since prehistoric times. The residents were forced to take up more appropriate accommodation in the village of Siggiewi as late as 1835.

Malta. Carts ruts. Hjulspor i klipperne. St. Pouls Bay.

A stroll through Naxxar - September 2019
Starting in Labour Avenue we walk up the tree-lined street to the Parish Church dedicated to the Nativity of Our Lady. From there we turn left into Santa Lucia Street and walk past the twin chapels dedicated to Our Lady of Victory and St. Lucy. We continue onward to the northern edge of Naxxar where we walk along some of the prehistoric cart ruts that criss-cross the rocky ground. We re-enter the town via San Pawl tat-Tarġa passing by The Captain's Tower (Torri tal-Kaptan) that was built by the Knights of St. John around 1548. Further up the road we encounter Torri Gauci, a defensive tower built by the family Gauci some time before 1548. The road leads back to the narrow winding streets in the centre of Naxxar, where we end our walk.
Malta 'Cart Ruts' – Proof of Advanced Ancient Civilization?
The Malta and Gozo islands in the Maltese archipelago have surfaces filled with hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of parallel lines carved deep into the stony ground. These ancient Maltese tracks – or what some refer to as “cart ruts” – have been found in obvious locations as well as the most unusual places – at cliff edges, along the coast, and even under the sea. Therefore, many believe these grooves in Malta’s bedrock are prehistoric and unique remaining an unsolved mystery today.
Do you believe in advanced ancient civilizations?
