Kayaking in Wellington Harbour - New Zealand | Fergs Kayaks
You can't beat Wellington on a good day! Or so they say. Certainly, it was a stunning day when Shirena and I went kayaking in Wellington Harbour. In a summer that had been mostly cold and wet, we were spoiled with warm sun, no wind, blue skies and fluffy white clouds. Everyone was about, enjoying the good weather, swimming in the sea and soaking up the sun rays on the beach.
We hired the kayaks from Fergs Kayaks ( which was started by legendary New Zealand Sportsman - Ian Ferguson.
Along the way we saw a man sneeze while on his paddle board. He immediately fell into the sea much to the delight of bystanders. Poor guy!
On the waterfront at Frank Kitts park, the Wellington Gorilla Man was dancing and posed for a photo with a little girl. There were lots of kids out in the Whairepo Lagoon cycling hard in their pedal boats. Kids and teenagers were jumping off the plank to cool off.
As we neared Te Papa & Chaffers Dock, two young lads battled it out on their standup paddleboards (SUP), trying to knock each other off their boards. While people strolled by and rode on their crocodile bikes looking amused by the boys.
Finally we made it to Freyburg Beach and Oriental Bay. Before turning around to head back to Fergs Kayaks, we charged twice around the Carter Fountain getting soaked in the process!
On the way back from our delightful kayak trip in the Wellington Harbour, I spotted a horde of cheeky seagulls. I couldn't help myself, so I snuck up on them and chased the beautiful creatures into the air. Good fun!

A Stunning Spring Day At Oriental Bay, Wellington, New Zealand
Oriental Bay is a suburb of Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand. Located close to the CBD on Wellington Harbour, it has the closest beaches to the central city and is thus a popular spot both for living and for visiting.
Oriental Bay is situated against the northern slope of Mount Victoria, 1.5 kilometres southeast of the city centre, at the start of a coastal route which continues past Hataitai around Evans Bay. The suburb was named after one of the first ships to bring settlers to Wellington.
In the summer months, Oriental Bay becomes a hive of activity. The beach is consumed with swimmers, party goers and families. The Carter Fountain is a distinctive feature in the Bay, as is the wooden barge which is often covered in swimmers.

WELLINGTON Sculptures.
A short video on the beautiful sculptures around Wellington that has been built up over the last 50 years. The capital city of New Zealand is often known for it's vibrant creative culture full of art, good food and wine. It is definitely the art capital of the country; you can find a sculpture around any corner of the city.
Thanks to sculptures.org.nz, you can take specialized tours by yourself or with your own group to see all the sculptures around the city. Depending on the area of Wellington you are in will depend on the tour/sculptures you will see. With only 68 sculptures listed on the website itself, there is a lot to see and many more sculptures to come across while exploring (as they are not all listed on the website). The city tours don't take much more than an hour to walk however the coastal tour can be up to 2 hours of driving and 6 hours of walking if you’re up for an adventure.
Wellington is truly a magical city. There is so much to do when visiting our wonderful capital of the country. If you are interested in the arts, in particular sculptures, this is definitely something for you to enjoy on a lovely sunny day.

A fake 'iceberg' in Wellington's Oriental Bay the other day was made by special effects wizards Weta for a Climate change stunt.
The object, which appears to be made of polystyrene or a similar material, is between the Carter Fountain and the Overseas Passenger Terminal.
A plaque visible on the 'iceberg' reads: Press anonymous 2009.
A group of self-described anonymous artists claimed responsibility for the 'iceberg' via email. Distributed by Tubemogul.
