This is a private museum in the Montparnasse area of Paris, France. It is not cheap, but there are some museum subscription arrangements for the you-pay ones. I do NOT recommend tourist attraction/transit deals for a visit here. They are never actually a bargain, by any means.
This is never a cheap visit, but I've liked every one I've made here. I believe it's on Boulevard Raspail. This show, the spouse INSISTED we see, and it was my first time being invited to go out with him in two months of being in the doghouse, so I went. In fact, I liked the 30-year retrospective of their acquisitions. He hated it. So it goes, ha ha ha ha!!
It's contemporary art here, with a strong educational aspect -- films, videos -- I usually find it educational. The small boutique has some really hard to find books and videos on DVD (most in French, but many of the DVDs have subtitles you can choose in many languages) and there are, of course, cute gifts, things for children, et c. Once, they were having a sale in the boutique and I was frustrated a bit. Why didn't I need to buy a lot of gifts? I could have gotten some wonderful, zesty, pretty cool Paris/art/different things for as little as one euro each! I could have had Christmas covered for 100 euros for 100 people, ha ha ha ha!!!! (I don't buy unless I want something myself very much or I really need to.)
These gardens are not huge and you are not supposed to have an all-out picnic here, but you could certainly, um, borrow a table, get a soda or something at the kiosk, and um, sit right down. Relax, read, refresh, play a game, et c. You paid the high price to get in. They just ask you to not run through the vegetation and stuff.
CHINA: BEIJING: CARTIER FOUNDATION UNVEIL CURIOUS MODERN ART OBJECT
Mandarin/Nat
The argument over what constitutes art is not limited to intellectuals in the hot-house environment of the Paris and New York art world.
In Beijing, the question was raised by the Cartier Foundation, an institute dedicated to the promotion of modern art -- even in the most unlikely settings.
It unveiled its curious modern art object in the ancient grounds of the Forbidden City.
The anticipation was building Wednesday morning as a crowd gathered in front of a large red box.
Local and foreign V-I-Ps invited by the prestigious Cartier Foundation, -- an institute created by Cartier jewellers to promote modern art -- waited patiently to see the highly- touted object unveiled.
Around them, the tall red walls and sloping tiled roofs of Beijing's Forbidden City, formerly the exclusive home of China's emperors and their court.
A Chinese military band played themes from French opera as the final preparations were made.
The Cartier Foundation billed the event as an artistic meeting of East and West.
Finally the moment arrived -- the red box slowly opened to the sounds of a rousing fanfare.
The serious tone of the ceremony could almost make one think that maybe now -- after centuries of misunderstanding between China and the outside world -- a new harmony could be struck.
And there it stood -- a golden flower pot.
Not an ordinary pot to be sure, but a 3-metre tall (12 feet), 5-ton, fiberglass and gold-leaf flower pot.
The French creator of the pot -- who, appropriately, started his career as a gardener -- seemed less concerned about a meeting of East and West than with the promotion of contemporary art.
SOUNDBITE: (French)
The Forbidden City is known worldwide but contemporary art is less famous and less tolerated by most people. To be able to have a meeting between this universal culture and the art of our time, this is the kind of task we want to work on.
SUPER CAPTION : Jean-Pierre Raynaud, Artist - Gold pot creator
There was certainly no shortage of curiosity from the local Chinese.
The question on many lips was simply: what is it?
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
It looks like a pot for an evergreen tree, or maybe a gigantic flower pot -- I really don't know what it is!
SUPER CAPTION: MA Li, visitor
Others simply took the gilded pot as a positive sign of China's new wealth.
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
Our country is now so rich, before we never had this kind of thing -- and now they just put it here! Even in the old imperial days there was never such a big one, and now we have this Super Pot, and it's made of gold!
SUPER CAPTION: Mr Lu, visitor.
One enthusiastic visitor was the American actor John Lone, who starred in the Forbidden-City epic The Last Emperor.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Look at this perfect pot, this gilded golden pot and with this very old faded color, thousands of years of history, motif carving, I think it's fantastic.
SUPER CAPTION : John Lone, actor - The Last Emperor
The gilded pot was created in 1985 for the grounds of the Cartier Foundation near Paris, and has since been displayed in Berlin and Tokyo.
It stays in Beijing until November 6, when the Forbidden City's experiment with modern art will end.
