Today we head to Lake Atitlan one of the most beautiful lakes in the world! It took us 3 hours to drive from Guatemala City to Lake Atitlan. On the way we passed through Solola and hopped on a quick boat ride from Panajachel to San Juan La Laguna.
San Juan La Laguna is famous for its painters, coffee and it's maya textiles. We first stopped at Cafe San Juan to drink a few different coffee roast. Maya coffee in San Juan La Laguna is unreal!
Then we made our way through the town admiring the murals and galleries. We saw a vendor selling some incredible Guatemalan snow cones and I had to try it. They put roasted corn and lime mixed with a few other flavors and its so good!
Lastly we stopped at Casa Flor Ixcaco to see how these Maya women weave these beautiful textiles. From scarfs, to t-shirts to even some incredible baby shoes. A must visit and you have to buy!!
Next time you head to Guatemala I recommend working with my friends at A La Carta Tours:

Guatemala Handspun Cotton & Backstrap Weaving - Yoga Retreat
See for our latest yoga retreat in Guatemala.
In the highlands of Guatemala, the Casa Flor Ixcaco is a women's weaving cooperative dedicated to preserving the art of cotton spinning and weaving. They make 100% natural products from organic cotton and natural dyes, using methods passed down from their ancestors over many generations.
On our yoga retreats, we always choose eco-resorts and excursions who support the local communities, making a positive difference.
At this co-op in San Juan La Laguna, on Lake Atitlán, Guatemala, watch how a handful of fluffy natural cotton becomes an exquisite handwoven shawl, through these ancient cotton spinning, dyeing and weaving techniques.
Many of the artisans we met in the villages of Lake Atitlán are single mothers, proud of their handcraft and grateful for the opportunity to create a better future for their children. You can support them by buying products through Fair Trade co-ops such as Casa Flor Ixcaco, who foster education and scholarships.

Casa Flor Ixcaco, Hand Spun Cotton Yarn
Rosa, a member of Casa Flor Ixcaco, a women's weaving cooperative in San Juan La Laguna Guatemala, demonstrates the art of hand spinning cotton. In this video she also speaks about the three types of cotton traditionally grown by the Mayan people. Casa Flor Ixcaco is the only co-op in San Juan dedicated to preserving the art of hand-spinning cotton yarn. They make 100% natural products from start to finish.
I have volunteered with Casa Flor Ixcaco for 4 years now, and continue to be impressed by their work and process. After over a decade working in the textile and apparel industry in various positions, I have decided to start my own business, a fair trade women's wear company. Casa Flor Ixcaco will by my first partner, and I hope to continue our relationship for many more years to come.
