Porto City Hall, Porto, Norte, Portugal, Europe
The current building of the City Hall of Porto, in Portugal, was designed by the Architect Correia da Silva and began to be built in 1920. The project came as a result of the plan of expansion of the civic center elaborated by the English architect Barry Parker, approved in 1916. The implementation of this plan led to the expansion north of the Liberdade Square, opening the Avenida dos Aliados and the current General Humberto Delgado Square. Although it was begun in 1920, the works of the building of the municipal districts suffered numerous interruptions, being introduced changes to the initial project, by Architect Carlos Ramos. The city services only settled in the new building in 1957. The building consists of six floors, a basement and two interior patios. The central tower, 70 meters high, with a chime clock, accessible by an inside staircase of 180 steps. The interiors, of marble and granite, are richly decorated. The façade of granite (removed from the quarries of S. Gens and Fafe in the early 20th century) is decorated with a dozen sculptures by José Sousa Caldas and Henrique Moreira representing the various activities that have always been linked to Porto, such as Viticulture, industry or shipping.
Porto Travel Guide - Portugal Happy Moments
Porto Travel Guide - Portugal Happy Moments
Porto is Portugal's second largest city and the capital of the Northern region. Porto is a busy industrial and commercial centre. The city itself isn't very populous (about 300,000 inhabitants), but the Porto metropolitan area (Greater Porto) has some 2,500,000 inhabitants in a 50km radius, with cities like Gaia, Matosinhos, Maia, and Gondomar.
The city was built along the hills overlooking the Douro river estuary, and its historical center was awarded World Heritage status by UNESCO in 1996. It has been continuously inhabited since at least the 4th Century, when the Romans referred to it as Portus Calle
Porto has a semi-Mediterranean climate, although it's strongly affected by the Atlantic ocean, which makes it cooler than other cities with this climate. However, temperatures can rise as high as 40ºC in August during occasional heat waves. Winters are mild and humid, with occasional cold nights where temperatures can drop below 0ºC.
Porto has always been a mercantile city, and this is evident in the style of the buildings lining the Avenida dos Aliados, the core of the downtown area. The center of town, unlike other major Portuguese cities, which tend towards the baroque, is granite and monumental. Residents of Porto are known as Tripeiros (tripe eaters) due to the fact that the city went without meat in order to provision the capital and the fleet that departed to Ceuta in 1415, had to subsist on tripe stew, still a speciality of the city.
Citizens of Porto hold themselves apart culturally from the South of the country, mainly Lisbon region, as is expressed in the often heard phrase o Porto é uma nação (Porto is a nation). This is due to the centralisation of government decisions in Lisbon, which the inhabitants understand it is not always fair for the North and Porto especially. They often say Porto works, Braga Prays, Coimbra studies, and Lisbon gets the money.
Outsiders used to often consider Porto to be more crass and mercantile than the rest of the country, due to the lack of rehabilitation the city urgently needed. Since the beginning of the century the city has been going through a major reconstruction and now has a more clean and pleasant feeling, attracting many new visitors.
The city is officially styled a muito nobre, sempre leal e invicta cidade do Porto (the very noble, always faithful, and invincible city of Porto). This is usually shortened to a Cidade Invicta (the invincible city) a title won because of Porto's resistance to the Cerco do Porto (Porto's Siege) during the 1832-34 civil war.
The city is quite varied architecturally, with medieval as well as modern living side by side. Porto's geography is hard on the feet, but pleasant to the eye. The city is extremely hilly, with many buildings built into a cliff face that overlooks the river. Stairs cut into the stone run up and down the cliff face and offer a laborious but rewarding walking tour. Across the river from Porto proper, in the suburb of Gaia, are located the warehouses of notable companies dealing with Port Wine, such as Cálem, Fonseca, Sandeman, Kopke, and others. If you speak in Spanish to a local, you will be largely understood and as a rule they will freely converse with you, but from time to time, more so with the older generation, you may be politely reminded that you are in Portugal and the native language is Portuguese.

When you visit Porto you have to see the historic centre, which was declared World Heritage Site by the Unesco. You can also visit the Tower of Clerigos, the House of the Music or Serralves Foundation, focused on Contemporary Art. Oporto has a great cultural offer.
Porto has a British air due to the arrival of British wine merchants, the reason why the city has a dispute with the country's capital, Lisbon. As it's full of beautiful aristocratic buildings and to visit all of them, Porto offers the longest metro of the country that covers the city and its surroundings.
Porto is the City of Bridges, due to the large number of bridges and the variety of construction and architectural styles. Of course, do not miss a tasting of wines from the area that a lot of wineries, scattered throughout the city, offers to tourists and locals.
One idea: Visit the city from the Duero River. Many companies offer cruises along the river from where you can contemplate the city from another perspective.

UNESCO World Heritage Site - is a
specific site that has been nominated for the international World Heritage program administered by UNESCO.
Um local denominado património mundial é reconhecido pela UNESCO (Organização das Nações Unidas para a Educação, a Ciência e a Cultura) como de mundial importância para a preservação dos patrimônios históricos e naturais de diversos países.
Porto (also Oporto; Portugal) is a city in northern Portugal and is the second largest city in Portugal, with a 2005 estimated population of 238,465 in the 15 parishes of Porto municipality, 1.6 million in the 14 Greater Metropolitan Area of Porto municipalities, which is an administrative and political entity, and 2.99 million people in the broader agglomeration of Porto Metropolitan Region.
One of Portugal's most internationally famous products, Port wine, was named after the city because it was originally shipped from the area or, more precisely, from Vila Nova de Gaia, a city just across the river which belongs to the same conurbation. The country was also named after the Latin name of this city, Portus Cale (English: Port of Gaia).
Due to its economic output and market size, Greater Porto area is one of the major financial and economic centers of the northwestern quarter of the Iberian Peninsula. Porto's municipality is the core of a large northern Atlantic conurbation, and Porto district is one of the most industrialized districts of Portugal.
The Oporto Cathedral (Portuguese: Sé do Porto), located in the historical centre of the city of Porto, Portugal, is one of the city's oldest monuments and one of the most important Romanesque monuments in Portugal.
The current Cathedral of Porto underwent construction around 1110 under the patronage of Bishop Hugo and was completed in the 13th century, but there is evidence that the city has been a bishopric seat since the Suevi domination in the 5th-6th centuries.
11 February 1387 (Oporto Cathedral)
Philippa of Lancaster:
Philippa of Lancaster, LG (31 March 1360 Leicester Castle -- July 19, 1415 Odivelas) was an English princess, daughter of John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster (a son of Edward III of England and Philippa of Hainault) by his wife and cousin Blanche of Lancaster. Blanche was the daughter of Henry of Grosmont, 1st Duke of Lancaster and Isabel de Beaumont.
Philippa became Queen consort of Portugal by her marriage with king John I, celebrated on 11 February 1387 in the city of Porto. This marriage was the final step in the Anglo-Portuguese alliance, against the France-Castile axis. Philippa is remembered for being a generous and loving queen.
