Places to see in ( Pompei - Italy ) Casa del Fauno
The House of the Faun, built during the 2nd century BC, was one of the largest and most impressive private residences in Pompeii, Italy, and housed many great pieces of art. It is one of the most luxurious aristocratic houses from the Roman republic, and reflects this period better than most archaeological evidence found even in Rome itself.
The House of the Faun was built in the 2nd century BC during the Samnite period (80 BC). There is evidence, most notably in the eastern walls of the tetrastyle atrium, that after the great earthquake in AD 62, the House of the Faun was rebuilt and/or repaired; yet, the building was only used again until AD 79, ultimately rendered unusable by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Although the eruption was devastating, the layers of ash covering the city preserved artworks, like the mosaics of the House of the Faun, which would have otherwise been likely destroyed or decayed due to the passage of time.
The House of the Faun was named for the bronze statue of the dancing faun located, originally, on the lip of the impluvium, a basin for catching rainwater; it has been moved to the center of the impluvium, as seen in the adjacent picture. Fauns are spirits of untamed woodland, which literate and Hellenized Romans often connected to Pan and Greek satyrs, or wild followers of the Greek god of wine and agriculture, Dionysus. It is purely decorative sculpture of a high order: the pose is light and graceful, Sir Kenneth Clark observed, the modeling well understood, the general sense of movement admirably sustained, though he missed in its suavity the stimulus of sharper contrasts to be found in Renaissance nudes.
Archaeologists discovered an inscription bearing the cognomen Saturninus, suggesting that the dwelling was owned by the important gens, or clan, Satria; a ring bearing the family name Cassius was also found, indicating that someone of the Cassii family married into the gens Satria and lived in the House of the Faun. The House of the Faun was initially excavated in 1830 by the German archeological institute.
The House of the Faun contained the Alexander Mosaic, depicting the Battle of Issus in 333 BC between Alexander the Great and Darius III of Persia. This mosaic may be inspired by or copied from a Greek painting finished in the late fourth century BC, probably by the artist Philoxenus of Eretria. Unlike most Pompeian pavements of the late second and early first centuries, this mosaic is made of tesserae, and not the more common opus signinum, or other kinds of stone chips set in mortar.
The House of the Faun covers nearly 3000 square meters and occupies an entire city block, or insula. The house can be divided into five major parts: the Tuscan atrium, peristyle atrium, service rooms and corridors, first, or Ionic, peristyle, and second, or Doric, peristyle, and their corresponding dependent rooms. Like many ancient Roman houses, the House of the Faun had tabernae, or storefront shops, and a highly sophisticated building plan, which details the many rooms. The entrance is decorated by the Latin message “HAVE”, a greeting both for meeting and parting.

House of Sallust, Pompeii, Italy
The House of Sallust at Pompeii (Region VI, Insula 2, Building 4) is a house that dates back to the 3rd century BC. It retains a lot of First Style paintings and is dominated by its vast atrium. The garden was accessed through the tablinum and was a strange, narrow trapezoidal shape which filed the gap between the back of the house and the east wall of the insula. A small garden with peristyle was added to the right (south) of the entrance in the 1st century BC. One theory is that the house had, by then, been converted into a hotel and that this new garden and surrounding chambers were the owner's private quarters. The house was better preserved originally - but it was hit by Allied bombs in 1943 during WW2.

Pompei - Casa del Menandro - The house of Menandro Pompeii

POMPEII (source Wikipedia):
Pompeii was an ancient Roman town-city near modern Naples, in the Campania region of Italy, in the territory of the comune of Pompei. Pompeii, along with Herculaneum and many villas in the surrounding area, was mostly destroyed and buried under 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft) of volcanic ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79.
Archaeologists believe that the town was founded in the 7th or 6th century BC by the Osci or Oscans. It came under the domination of Rome in the 4th century BC, and was conquered and became a Roman colony in 80 BC after it joined an unsuccessful rebellion against the Roman Republic. By the time of its destruction, 160 years later, its population was estimated at 11,000 people, and the city had a complex water system, an amphitheatre, a gymnasium, and a port.
The eruption destroyed the city, killing its inhabitants and burying it under tons of ash. Evidence for the destruction originally came from a surviving letter by Pliny the Younger, who saw the eruption from a distance and described the death of his uncle Pliny the Elder, an admiral of the Roman fleet, who tried to rescue citizens. The site was lost for about 1,500 years until its initial rediscovery in 1599 and broader rediscovery almost 150 years later by Spanish engineer Rocque Joaquin de Alcubierre in 1748. The objects that lay beneath the city have been preserved for more than a millennium because of the long lack of air and moisture. These artefacts provide an extraordinarily detailed insight into the life of a city during the Pax Romana. During the excavation, plaster was used to fill in the voids in the ash layers that once held human bodies. This allowed archaeologists to see the exact position the person was in when he or she died.
Pompeii has been a tourist destination for over 250 years. Today it has UNESCO World Heritage Site status and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Italy, with approximately 2.5 million visitors every year.
House of Menander - Casa Del Menandro, Scavi di Pompei - family home of Poppaea Sabina
Let me show you around Casa Del Menandro/ House of Menander, a 2000 year old well preserved Roman villa which lay buried under volcanic ash for many centuries.
Historians believe that this was the family home of Poppaea Sabina who was Emperor Nero's second wife.
Following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79, the town of Pompeii was buried under many feet of volcanic ash. The ash preserved Pompeii and the Casa Del Menandro for 1700 years until the first excavations (Scavi) began.
Inside the columns stand and the frescoes remain on the walls of the house, giving the visitor a clear indication of how the citizens of the ancient Roman Empire had once lived.
It's apparent that the occupants of this house had a better quality of life during those Biblical times than some of the people living on the planet today!!

Places to see in ( Pompei - Italy ) Casa del Menandro
The Casa del Menandro is a house in Pompeii, Italy. It is located in Region I, Insula 10, Entrance 4. It covers an area of about 1,800 square metres. The house was excavated between November 1926 and June 1932.
Della Corte thought the owner could be Quintus Poppaeus Sabinus due to a seal and a graffito in the entrance corridor mentioning 'Quintus' and other graffiti in the house referring to 'Sabinus'. The house may have belonged to a local magistrate.
The nationality of the owner is more in dispute than their economic status. Pompeii’s Mediterranean climate enticed many Romans to invest in holiday villas there, so it is possible that the owner at the time of Vesuvius’ eruption in 79 AD was a wealthy tourist, not a local.
The estate is referred to as “The House of Menander” because there is a well-preserved fresco of the ancient Greek Dramatist Menander in a small room off the peristyle. Some speculate the painting is not actually of Menander but rather of the owner of the house or another person reading works by Menander. The house included other frescoes, including one depicting the death of Laocoon.
The large columns in the peristyle of the Casa del Menandro are representative of the Doric style of architecture, an offshoot of the Classical Style, which also stems from Greece. The emphasis on Greek culture in Pompeian architecture is not surprising since Greek sailors had been using the port as a trading post before the Oscans founded the city in the 6th century BC.
