Cascade Mountain is a mountain located in the Bow River Valley of Banff National Park, adjacent to the town of Banff. The mountain was named in 1858 by James Hector after the waterfall or cascade on the southern flanks of the peak. The mountain has also been called Stoney Chief, which is related to the name of the smaller neighbouring mountain Stoney Squaw, which is still in use. Cascade is the highest mountain adjacent to the townsite.
The mountain can be climbed starting from the Norquay Ski Area base. The first portion is a fairly moderate hike, up to the Cascade Amphitheatre. Continuing upwards, the route ascends along the ridge edge until it reaches the crest where it dips before it rises to the false summit. While the false summit can be descended at its end, it is much easier to follow a trail around the western side along the exposed foot. Snow typically blocks this route almost until mid July and attempting it while snowy can entail considerable avalanche risk due to the slabby terrain and exposure. A long window of clear weather - full day - should be anticipated before attempting this climb, as many climbers have gotten into trouble and needed rescue (or died) when a storm suddenly blows in. The ascent normally takes 3 to 4 hours while the descent along the same path takes 2 to 3 hours.

HIKING in the CANADIAN ROCKIES: CASCADE MOUNTAIN
SKIP INTRO: 0:35
Banff, Alberta has a few big name mountains in close proximity to the town and none stands out more than Cascade Mountain. Rising just short of 3,000m, it makes for an epic hike and one long day.
Cascade is the mountain you'll see in many iconic photos from Banff avenue and it doesn't disappoint. Give yourself a day and make it a reality to see the amazing views from above.
I've created this video with the intent to aid others with knowledge of the hike from Bow Falls up to the summit.

Cascade Mountain, Banff - 2012 Solo
I started this scramble at 11:00 and wasn't sure if I would make it. 7.5 hours later I was back at the car with Cascade under my belt. A very long hike just to the ridge. Another longer hike up the ridge to the summit.

Cascade Mountain near Banff
It turned out to be a little bit harder than estimated - I kind of thought it would be easy. We walked along the ski road past the very last ski lift and then turned onto the trail that was marked amphitheater. From there we climbed a long forested trail into the bowl of the amphitheater. Then we climbed a ridge looking down into the bowl, and then behind a small mountain across a huge scree slope, and then up to the big goal - where we could see Banff. We chilled for a while and headed down. Mistakenly we tried to descend via the bowl but that was a mistake, it was too sketchy, and after some scary incidents including a massive boulder literally almost crushing me, we bailed, reconnoitered and got the hell out of there. We didn't bring quite enough water - overall underestimating things a bit. And I did not have my water filtration system or pills. Nature was very instructive basically. Of note the forest fires made things very misty, and it did spatter rain on us - but we had gear.
