Mill Race Cottage is ideally situated on the edge of the Peak District National Park in the popular village of Bonsall.
In an ideal area for a romantic holiday, the gardens extend to approximately two acres, the main feature of which is a delightful mill stream which cascades through the gardens over a series of waterfalls, with several small bridges criss crossing the waterway.
Bonsall is a delightful historic village nestling in the Derbyshire Hills surrounded by wooded hillside with pleasant walks and fine views. There are two pubs in Bonsall, only a 10-minute walk up the hill from the property. As you approach Loneacre, the main house is set well back from the road. Sitting proudly in beautiful, plush landscaped gardens, the view of the property is obscured by a variety of established, well maintained trees and shrubs set behind a traditional dry stone wall. At first glance, it's clear that this property is going to be something special and as you enter the front gardens through the single wooden gate, the full extent of the charm and character of this unique property will become evident. You're greeted by an attractive, traditional Limestone cottage which blends seamlessly into the surroundings.
Enveloped by various shaped lawns separated by stone pathways, the surrounding beds and rockeries to the front are home to a colourful and varied selection of plants and shrubs which bring the property to life. It's no surprise that these wonderful gardens have been opened up to the public in the past and have also been featured in the Bonsall Open Gardens publication.
The location is very private, with no overlooking neighbours and a well screened frontage, you'd be forgiven for thinking that the property was stood on its own with no other surrounding properties for miles. The only sound which disturbs the complete peacefulness is the gentle trickling of water from the mini waterfall which cascades into a small feature pond.
The reception hallway is everything you would expect of a traditional Derbyshire cottage and more. Warm, welcoming, cosy and quirky, the exposed stone walls on either side, adjoined by a superb Cathedral style vaulted ceiling, are a note back to earlier times when these were the original exterior walls of the house and barn, now incorporated into one to provide excellent sized living space. There's also a large separate office to the first floor with a separate entrance which could be utilised in a variety of different manners. At the end of the Hallway is a large feature window. This provides the first glimpse of one of the most appealing features of Loneacre as it allows for simply stunning, panoramic views across the unspoilt countryside to the rear of the property.
Bear left and you'll enter a fabulous living room. An attractive cast iron, live fuel burning stove set upon a stone hearth provides a fantastic ambience and the exposed ceiling beams and joists are one of the many focal points of the room. This is just one of the four reception rooms inside Loneacre. On the other side of the hallway is the dining room.
A pretty bay picture window with a window seat overlooks the front gardens and the exposed beams and joists, paired with the feature part tiled wall and hearth ooze original charm and character. A medium sized breakfast table occupies the centre of the room but there's still plenty of space for free standing dressers and cabinets.
The dining room leads into a second captivating sitting room. Another attractive, excellent sized reception room which stays true to the cottage feel of the property. In the top corner, you'll notice a feature full length window with detailed carved wood...(view the rest at

Derbyshire Property For Sale - Hollybank, The Dale, Bonsall, DE4 2AY

This particular spot in Bonsall is exactly what you would expect of a traditional village on the edge of the peak district. As you proceed along The Dale you're surrounded by pleasant countryside views and traditional dry stone walls. You'll pass by all types of unique and individually designed properties which add a wonderful character and village feel to the surroundings. A perfect location for Hollybank...
From the outside, Hollybank is simply beautiful. Comfortably tucked away behind a dry stone wall and double gates, it seems to blend in effortlessly with the rural surroundings. Clearly when this property was designed and built, the aim was not to build an ultra-contemporary residence with little sympathy for the surroundings. Instead, they made the wise decision to create a most attractive, cottage style family home which complements the peaceful settings.
The attention to detail on the exterior is remarkable. Built to a superior standard using natural and reclaimed materials, the property is constructed of Limestone with gritstone quoins, heads and sills to the windows, all set under a traditional slate roof. With an exterior so aesthetically pleasing and such a huge amount of kerbside appeal, you'll be excited just thinking about what the accommodation inside will reveal...
When most think of a Cottage, the phrases welcoming, warm and friendly are usually associated. All of which can be said of Hollybank. Most will also think of small, but this is far from the case. Whilst the property may look a pleasing size from the outside, you'll be stunned at just how much room there is on the inside. It's almost like you've walked into a tardis with huge reception rooms and excellent sized double bedrooms spanned across three floors.
You'll also be delighted to discover that the extraordinary attention to detail on the exterior has been carried on, if not bettered, from top to bottom inside. Without seeing Hollybank for yourself, it's almost impossible to comprehend the superior quality of the internal accommodation. There are so many impressive individual features, fixtures and fittings that it would take hours just to go through those on the ground floor.
One would struggle to choose a favourite aspect of Hollybank because the whole property is of such a high standard. However, particular highlights include a marvellous reception hallway. Separating the guest accommodation from the rest of the house, this is an entrance to behold. With a stone flagged floor, exposed beams, lintels and timber work, a double height ceiling and a carved wooden staircase leading to an outstanding mezzanine dining area. There is also a reclaimed timber column which rises to the first floor.
The lounge is also a quite extraordinary living space. Inset a rustic brick fireplace, flames flicker from a feature wood burning stove, exuding warmth and adding to a wonderfully cosy atmosphere. The
solid oak flooring which is found throughout most of the property is a pleasing accompaniment to the rest of the timber work on display and the windows to three elevations allow for views across the un-spoilt surrounding countryside. Who needs a TV when you can view such wonderful scenery from the comfort of your own lounge..?
The second floor also provides a further reception room, bespoke fitted kitchen with hand crafted units and a lobby with a staircase to the second floor.
The second floor has been skilfully converted to provide three double bedrooms. Each adhering to the same excellent standards found throughout the rest of the property, the master features an en suite shower room and there is a further family bathroom.
A feature I have yet to mention is the versatility of the Hollybank. For those with Holiday let/Bed & Breakfast interests or for those that require separate accommodation for relatives or guests, the layout has been well planned to accommodate such interests. Awarded four diamonds by VisitBritain Quality in Tourism, the property has been successfully run as a popular holiday let with the ground floor double bedrooms (each having their own en suite facilities) being used as guest accommodation...

Well Dressings, Bonsall, Derbyshire
A combination of video footage and photos (all with audio recorded in situ) of a magical day out at Bonsall in Derbyshire when the wells were being blessed (29 July 2012). After a short ceremony in the Parish Church, we progressed through the village, stopping at 5 separate wells, which had all been beautifully decorated with flower petals etc.. An explanation was given of the meaning of each picture and the beneficiaries chosen for donations, then (after a short prayer) a hymn was sung, before moving on to the next location. We ended up at the Wesleyan Reform Chapel, where tea and cake were served amidst beautiful floral decorations - before finally moving on to the park, where a brass band was playing, whilst cream teas were on offer in the marquee, A superb day out - and highly recommended - congratulations to the people of Bonsall for putting on such a wonderful show!
