Cascadia Free State
A group of Cascadia Earth First!ers and Rising Tide members took action against the continued liquidation and destruction of Oregons Elliott State Forest. Using sky pods, bipods, road blockades, overturned cargo vans, lock downs and many other beautiful installations, the road to Umpcoos Ridge timber sale has been occupied, held and reclaimed for the forest, the people and future generations.

Earthquakes of Cascadia: 1979 - 2019
The widely-felt M6.3 earthquake of August 29, 2019 on the Blanco Fracture Zone was only the most recent of many moderate-size earthquakes to strike this region off of the Oregon coast. As this animation shows, such earthquakes are common along the boundaries of the Juan de Fuca plate with the Pacific Plate, which also includes the Juan de Fuca Ridge, the Gorda Ridge, and the Mendocino Fracture Zone. Fortunately these events rarely pose a tsunami hazard since the largest of these earthquakes tend to have strike-slip mechanisms that move the seafloor mostly sideways with little disruption to the ocean above.
The Juan de Fuca Plate meets the North American Plate, however, with a very different sort of plate boundary: a subduction zone. This plate boundary can produce megathrust earthquakes with large vertical motions that cause devastating tsunamis. It has been more than 300 years since the last time the Cascadia Subduction Zone generated such destruction, on January 26, 1700. This subduction zone also created the volcanoes of the High Cascades, stretching from northern California into southern British Columbia.
To put the recent earthquake in context this animation begins 40 years earlier, in 1979. In that time frame 10 earthquake of M6.0 or larger occurred on the Blanco FZ and more than a dozen along the Mendocino FZ, some with M7.0 or larger. The fracture zones off of Vancouver Island have also produced numerous earthquakes larger the M6.0, with one as large at M6.8. The largest earthquake on the Cascadia Subduction Zone in the last 40 years was the M6.8 Nisqually Earthquake in southern Puget Sound on February 28, 2001. The volcanic activity of Mt. St. Helens is also visible in 1980-1982 and 2004-2008. As the area covered by the animation extends over North America, it also includes activity unrelated to Cascadia, such as the October 28, 1983, M6.9 southern Idaho earthquake and numerous small events associated with the Yellowstone Caldera.
Please note that this animation shows every earthquake in the USGS/NEIC catalog for this region. As the animation moves forward in time so too does the science of seismology with the continual addition of newer and better instruments. As the animation approaches the present day these instrument networks are able to detect smaller and smaller earthquakes, creating the illusion of increasing activity. In reality these smaller earthquakes have always been there, but the technology has only recently been able to detect them.

Trees Across Oregon: The Western Hemlock Zone
Nowhere else in the world does a single tree species dominate the landscape over such a vast area, as Douglas-fir does in Oregon's Western Hemlock Zone. This zone is the most extensive forest zone in Oregon and includes most of the Coast Range as well as the Cascade Mountains below about 3,500 feet in elevation. In this half-hour video--written and narrated by Whitey Lueck, a Eugene-based naturalist and an instructor at the University of Oregon--you'll learn how this zone's different forest types function, from old-growth stands of fir and hemlock, to sites dominated by western redcedar or red alder. Whitey also discusses the landscape history of these forests, which developed quite recently despite being sometimes referred to as ancient forests. All of the film footage was made in the McKenzie River watershed of Oregon's central West Cascades, within just a few miles of McKenzie Bridge.

USGS: Devastating Megaquake, Tsunami, To Hit West Coast Of US
Is The Big One imminent? Famed USGS scientist Jim Berkland, the man who predicted the Loma Prieta World Series Earthquake, has a terrifying warning for the West Coast of the US in the wake of massive earthquakes in Ecuador and Japan that have left hundreds dead, awakened volcanoes around the Pacific Ocean's Ring of Fire, and kicked off earthquake swarms in Hawaii, Arizona, and Yellowstone National Park.
Beware the new and full moons, Berkland says in this exclusive interview. The maverick geologist says that 20 of the last 25 megaquakes have occurred on the dates of new and full moons, the result of equinoctal tides, extreme gravitational forces that cause solid earth to expand and contract much as ocean tides rise and fall.
Berkland says that he is particularly worried about the San Andreas Fault in the LA Basin and the Cascadia Subduction Zone along the coast of Oregon and Washington State, where a long overdue earthquake would undoubtedly be accompanied by a massive tsunami that could kill thousands and cause billions of dollars in property damage.

For millennia, the Cascade Mountains have stood watch over the Pacific Northwest. Millions of people, attracted by their grandeur, have settled in their shadows. But the slumber of these majestic sentinels is a fitful one and geologists are monitoring their ominous rumblings. Could what they are hearing be a muted warning?
The Cascades are actually a chain of volcanoes part of the infamous Ring of Fire that encircles the Pacific Rim. When Mt. St. Helen's erupted, the Pacific Northwest experienced first hand the staggering power that loomed over them...could it happen again?
Journey with us to the Philippines, Japan and Mexico to discover how other people have survived and suffered alongside their volatile neighbors. As our own mountains rumble and growl from deep within, now is the time to ask: what will we do when our Sleeping Giants Wake?

Ron Tyler has been involved in First Response and in the Preparedness arena for years. Since the early 1980’s Ron Tyler has been working to make sure people are prepared for whatever comes there way. He assisted his parents doing survival dinners at a local church and talked about why people need to be prepared. He has lived in earthquake country.. Quite a few large earthquakes hit San Diego and the state of California. He was a First Responder, and went to those areas to help serve, rescue and train people. Ron has set up emergency command posts during fire seasons in the mountains of southern California and in Colorado.. Having been a volunteer fireman and then a Police Officer, Ron knows what needs to be done and has done it. Ron and the crews have saved many people’s lives. Ron has spoken to hundreds of community groups, helped organize Emergency Preparedness Fairs where he has lived. Through his travels Ron has met hundreds of people and is valued in those communities and continues to work and lecture people on the complex work of Emergency/Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management.
Ron has spent 24 years in Law Enforcement, and has an extensive background in Law Enforcement and tactics. Ron’ career was spent in homicide, traffic accident investigation and weapons and tactics and personal/executive protection.

Geologists have found anomalies and mantel Rising under the Cascadia fault line off the West coast
#anomalies #mantel #risingmantel #cascadiafaultline
Geologists have found anomalies under the Cascadia fault line off the West coast of the United States. Scientists say pieces of mantel have been discovered “rising up” from underneath the underwater fault line.
New data from the seismometers monitoring the Cascadia fault line helped University of Oregon researchers identify seismic anomalies at both ends of the fault where they believe pieces of the upper mantle are rising and modulating earthquake activity. According to Sci-Tech Daily, these anomalies may influence the location, frequency, and strength of earthquake events along the U.S. Pacific Northwest.
