Drastic cuts in cod fishing quota threaten industry

Facing steep cuts of up to 77% in allowable catch, New England fishermen are worried that most of their fleet will go out of business. Comments on the proposed cut levels are open to the public until April 15th. The decided cut quantity will go into effect May 1st, when the 2013 fishing season starts.
Senator Elizabeth Warren filed an amendment that would provide disaster relief funds for the Northeast Atlantic fishing industry. The US Department of Commerce officially declared the Northeast Fishery a disaster in September 2012, but funds to help the fishing industry didn't pass after unexpected costs incurred from Hurricane Sandy.
