Casemates du Bock underground tunnels in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg
I look a walk through the Casemates du Bock in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg. They are a series of underground tunnels that are carved inside the rock cliffs surrounding the city. Not only do you get to explore the tunnel system but you also get some great views out over the city. Shot in September 2019.

Luxembourg: One day in Luxembourg - beating the heat at the Casemates du Bock
We took the four-hour train from Maastricht, the Netherlands to the small country of Luxembourg, where we spent most of the day exploring the Casemates du Bock. Along the way we also met up with two of our closest friends.
Luxembourg is tiny but beautiful. We were there in late August, and it was sweltering hot. We took refuge from the heat by ducking into the Casemates du Bock, which is a fascinating maze of underground tunnels looking out into the valley below it. The best thing was the views-- it seemed like there were dozens of little lookout points of the most picturesque villages. It really seemed like pages out of a fairy tale.
We liked what little we saw of Luxembourg and would love to stop by here again to see more!

도심 한가운데에 여행자들의 시선을 사로잡는 큰 다리가 있다. 바로 아돌프 다리다. 아돌프 대공작이 통치하던 시기인 1903년에 완공되었는데, 당시 세계에서 가장 규모가 큰 아치교로 이름을 날렸다고 한다. 최근에는 다리 밑으로 자전거와 사람들이 다닐 수 있도록 또 하나의 통로를 만들었는데 도로 교통을 위한 참 좋은 아이디어란 생각이 든다. 통로를 지나는 기분이 궁금하다. 첫인상은 ‘깨끗하다’였는데, 이내 시원한 기운이 밀려온다. 무엇보다 자동차가 없으니 안전해서 아이들과 함께 다니기 좋을 것 같다. 물론 그곳에서 바라보는 시내 경치 또한 일품이다. 아돌프 다리 밑, 성벽 아래에 자리한 마을 ‘그룬트’. 조용히 흐르는 알제트 강과 그 옆으로 옹기종기 지어진 집들이 평화로워 보인다. 하지만 아주 오래전에는 거대한 성벽으로부터 보호받지 못하는 가난한 자들의 땅이었다고 한다. “이게 ‘지슌투어’라고 불리는 타워인데 옛날에 프랑스 ‘보방’이라는 사람이 여기 왔을 때 만든 타워예요. 이게 어떻게 쓰였냐면 옛날에 아픈 사람들이 많았을 때 아픈 사람들은 이 밖에서 살았고, 안 아프고 건강한 사람들은 이 안쪽에서 보호받으면서 살았는데 그것을 가르는 게 이 타워의 역할이었다고 합니다.” 타워 안에는 당시에 아픈 사람들을 들어오지 못하게 막았던 흔적이 보인다. 사회 약자 중에 약자를 가르고 분리하던 시절이 처참하게 느껴진다. 그 참혹한 계급의 벽이 후대의 관광자원이 되고 이야깃거리가 된 상황이 아이러니다. 아랫마을 중에서 오래된 골목길을 찾아 발길을 옮겼다. 이 골목이 옛날에는 유명한 ‘생선시장’ 골목이었다고 한다. ‘큰 길’이라는 표지판과 달리 길이 차 한 대가 겨우 지나갈 정도로 좁다. 그 당시에는 여기가 마을에서 가장 큰 길이었단다. 그 옛날의 시끌벅적함은 사라졌지만 룩셈부르크 사람들은 아직도 추억을 떠올리며 이 골목을 찾는다. 이 벽에 쓰인 이 한 문장 때문이다. ‘우리는 우리대로 있고 싶다’ 누가 언제 썼는지도 모를 이 한 문장이 내게 큰 울림을 준다. 1,000년이라는 긴 시간 동안 인접한 강대국들의 침략에서 버티고 버텨 낸 셈부르크인들의 의지와 자존심이 느껴진다. 살아남기 위해 피와 눈물로 세웠을 거대한 성벽. 다른 나라에 지배되고 다시 독립할 때마다 성벽은 조금씩 더 높아지고 견고해졌다. 그리고 룩셈부르크는 강해져갔을 것이다. 룩셈부르크인들의 그 정신이 지금의 작지만 강한 나라 룩셈부르크를 만든 것 같다. “슬픈 역사를 가진 벽이에요. 저 벽안에서 많은 병사들이 싸우고 죽었으니까요. 안타까운 역사지만 그 투쟁이 있었기에 오늘날이 있는 거라 생각합니다.” 보크포대 속으로 직접 들어가 보기로 했다. 성벽 안쪽은 길들이 미로처럼 연결 되어있다. 총 길이가 20여 킬로미터 가량 된다고 하는데 안전상 개방된 코스는 2킬로미터. 이 동굴은 시대에 따라 포대로 쓰이기도 했고 감옥으로 쓰이기도 하고 연극 무대로 쓰이기도 했다고 한다. 그리고 지금은 이렇게 관광자원으로 쓰이고 있다. “바위도 멋있고, 여기서 보는 구시가지 풍경이 멋져요” “이곳 카체마츠(보크 포대)에 두 번째 왔습니다. 이번에는 친구들에게 룩셈부르크를 보여주려고 왔습니다. 성곽도 예쁘고 보시다시피 룩세부르크 시가지도 보이는데 꼭 한번 와봐야 하는 곳이죠.“ “룩셈부르크에서 좋은 시간 보내세요.” 보크포대 위로 올라가면 룩셈부르크에서 최고로 경치가 좋다고 소문난 장소가 나온다. 얼마나 좋은지 ‘유럽에서 가장 아름다운 발코니’라는 수식어가 붙었다. 역시나 사람들이 풍경을 배경 삼아 사진을 찍고 있다. 너무 멋져요 좋아요. 이런 풍경은 처음 봐요.” “기대 이상이에요. 작은 나라지만 정말 멋져요. 유럽에서 가장 아름다운 발코니라는 게 맞는 것 같아요. 보시면 알잖아요.” 그들의 말대로 직접 풍경을 감상해 본다. 유럽에서 가장 아름다운 발코니. 한 번이라도 룩셈부르크의 성벽 위에서 풍경을 본 사람이라면 아마 이 말을 부정할 수는 없을 것이다.

The Grand Ducal Palace (Luxembourgish: Groussherzogleche Palais, French: Palais grand-ducal, German: Großherzogliches Palais) is a palace in Luxembourg City, in southern Luxembourg. It is the official residence of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg, and where he performs most of his duties as head of state of the Grand Duchy.
Luxembourg (Luxembourgish: Lëtzebuerg, French: Luxembourg, German: Luxemburg), also known as Luxembourg City (Luxembourgish: Stad Lëtzebuerg or d'Stad, French: Ville de Luxembourg, German: Stadt Luxemburg, Luxemburg-Stadt)[pron 2], is the capital city of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg (also named Luxembourg), and the country's most populous commune.
