Bog Oak Penal Cross by Kevin Casey
The Penal Cross sculpture in Bog Oak is approximately 20cm in length. The piece features a sculptured figure on the natural finished cross. The base is made from natural stone.
During the Penal Laws period in Ireland when a Catholic priest was forbidden to celebrate mass, it became common for the priest to say mass in remote areas on a rock, (later to be known as a mass rock). He carried a small cross hidden up his sleeve, which he placed on the rock.
My design has been taken from the Kilnacarrow Penal Cross (Longford). The date 1726 is carved into the back. It has been passed down in the McKenna Family through the generations.

Legend has it that Finn on his travels came to study art and poetry with Finneges, the wise man. On the day that he arrived at Finneges's house, they were cooking the red speckled Salmon of Knowledge, which was prophesied whoever ate one of those fish would possess understanding of everything in the world.
Finn was given the task of cooking the fish but forbidden to taste it.
While turning the fish Finn burned his thumb and to ease the pain put his finger in his mouth and so it was that eternal knowledge passed to Finn, who is often depicted with his thumb in his mouth.
