I Casini d'Ardenza
A differenza di quanto il nome possa far credere, i Casini d'Ardenza non erano un luogo di piacere, ma semplicemente un residence estivo.

Places to see in ( Livorno - Italy ) Lungomare di Livorno
The seafront of Livorno is a promenade that runs for several kilometers along the coast of the Ligurian Sea , starting from the port area , until you reach the village of Antignano and ideally end in the coastal stretch of the Romito . The road takes the name of viale Italia, viale d'Antignano, via Pendola, viale Amerigo Vespucci, for a total length of about 7 k m , thus flowing into Via del Littorale towards the farthest fraction of Quercianella (see the road heading of Livorno ).
Originally the Labronica coast was characterized by a series of sighting towers, some of which survived to the present day, often integrated into larger structures, such as the Sonnino Castle . In 1835 the works were started for the extension of the coastal road that ran up to the then village of Ardenza ; at the same time, along the new road, numerous stately buildings were built, above all in the first section that led from Porta a Mare to the church of San Jacopo in Acquaviva .
The arrival point of the walk, at the Rotonda d'Ardenza , was instead characterized by numerous villas with large gardens; the most significant construction, however, remains that of the so-called Casini , a series of neoclassical housing units designed by Giuseppe Cappellini and which should have been leased to foreigners passing through Livorno. The Casini model was taken up around the middle of the nineteenth century , when work began on the Palazzo Caprilli, an imposing building characterized by a continuous front divided by columns of giant order , built to offer rental apartments to vacationers.
The various bathing establishments that sprang up along the coastal road contributed decisively to the development of the infrastructures linked to the promenade. The news of a first establishment dates back to 1781 : it was opened under a government concession by Paolo Baretti, consul of the Kingdom of Sardinia in Livorno; the bathrooms, however, were placed inside a wooden building with five small rooms, where the sea water was pushed through a mechanical system.
The walk to the sea has maintained its characteristics substantially unaltered until today. However, an important restoration has characterized the first part of the avenue to the sea, in the stretch between Piazza Mazzini and the Hotel Palazzo . The works, started in the late nineties of the twentieth century , have brought the Terrazza Mascagni back to its former splendor , making it the fulcrum of the entire seafront.
Other changes have been made to the pedestrian promenade that runs parallel to the avenue, with the construction of some commercial structures (bars and ice-cream parlors) designed by the architect Cristiano Toraldo di Francia ( Florence , 1941 ) and which, in their light contemporary architecture, recall to the ancient chalets that once stood along the promenade.
Finally, an important, as troubled, restoration, involved the historic Aquarium Diacinto Cestoni , whose expansion works have allowed to build a new semicircular body around the old structure; in 2004 the shipyard was visited by the then President of the Republic Carlo Azeglio Ciampi .

Nubifragio Livorno: Le strade diventano fiumi
