Sears Nanaimo (Simpson Sears)
Simpson-Sears, Nanaimo opened its doors to the general public on 17th June 1954. The new store was built by G. H. Wheaton Ltd., of Victoria and Polson and Siddall, architects of Vancouver, designed it. Excavation for the building located at the present casino at Port Place shopping mall, began in August 1953, which was then known as the central sports ground. In May 1990, Sears moved to the larger location at Rutherford Mall. Sears Canada declared bankruptcy in October 2017, and was subsequently taken over by a liquidation company named Hill Co. The doors officially closed on 8 Jan. 2018.
