Towering high above the Dee Valley and the bustling town of Llangollen, home of the International Eisteddfod, Castell Dinas Bran occupies one of Britain's most spectacular sites. A rugged, foreboding pinnacle, the hillock was the ideal spot to erect a castle. It seemed completely impenetrable, commanded views for miles around, and offered quick recognition of an approaching visitor, whether friend or foe. Yet, the native Welsh princes of Powys occupied the hilltop for only a few decades.
Today, that same site is open to exploration by the public. Forced to climb to the summit, modern visitors experience the struggle and the exhilaration that the castle's medieval inhabitants - and their Edwardian attackers - must have felt. Without a doubt, the walk is a breathtaking challenge. However, that climb heightens the allure of Dinas Bran. And, it demonstrates the stark reality of medieval castle life.
Dinas Bran is variously translated as Crow Castle, Crow City, Hill of the Crow, or Bran's Stronghold. The castle first appears in 12th century historical documents as part of a medieval piece entitled Fouke le Fitz Waryn,or The Romance of Fulk Fitzwarine. While this work claimed that the castle, known as Chastiel Bran, was in ruin as early as 1073, the remains we see today date to the occupation of the princes of Powys Fadog in the mid 13th century. Possibly, the Chastiel Bran mentioned in the romance was a Norman timber castle, but nothing of substance supports this conjecture. However, the encompassing ditch and earthen embankments, which enclose the southern and eastern portions of the stone fortress, do date to the Iron Age. They remind us that this hilltop had strategic value long before the princes of Powys, or the Normans, ventured into the region. Interestingly, the word, Dinas, has its origins in the Iron Age as well, and is found in the names of Iron Age hillforts throughout Wales.

A site of strategic significance since at least the 8th century, the first appearance in historical documents dates to the 12th century and was described as ruined as early as 1073. However, the stone castle that lies in ruin today was likely built in the mid 13th century by the princes of Powys Fadog (an area that encompasses the modern day Llangollen and Wrexham), most likely by Gruffydd Maelor II (son of Madog ap Gruffydd Maelor I) in the 1260s. The castle was inhabited by the Welsh princes for only a short time before it was sieged by Henry de Lacy, the Earl of Lincoln during King Edward I's first foray into Wales in 1277. de Lacy's forces captured and destroyed the castle.
The castle was back in Welsh hands in 1282, held by Dafydd ap Gruffydd, brother of Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, during the Welsh uprising. Dafydd was captured, taken to England, and executed.
It was still of strategic value in the early 15th century, when Owain Glyndwr attempted (unsuccessfully) to capture the site in 1402 from Thomas Fitzalan, Earl of Arundel.
By the reign of King Henry VIII (1509-1547), the castle was a total ruin and has been so ever since.

Stay at the Capel Pennant converted Chapel
You don't have to travel across the world to see amazing things. We had many plans for our trip to Wales, but ended up enjoying an amazing experience just in one town. The town of Llangollen.
We spent the morning in the softest feather bed ever at Capel Pennant converted Chapel Waking up feeling great we headed into town to get breakfast at Chatwins coffee and cakes, before heading down to the river Dee for a beautiful moment in the sunshine.
But the highlight moment of the day was when we headed to Castell Dinas Bran for an experience that made us remember that there is beauty all over the world. Even in a small Welsh town in November :-)

The distinctively shaped weir, which is 460 feet (140 m) long, helps create a pool of water that can enter the Llangollen Canal (via an adjacent valve house and flow meter). The canal is west of Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.

Took a hike to Castell Dinas Bran in Llangollen North Wales to show the beautiful scenery on a glorious spring morning, with the Phantom 3 standard. Had an interesting chat with a helicopter pilot on my way up, asked if he would let me have a go of his if i let him have a go of mine :-) Thumbs up pal if you are watching!

Westons Wales Llangollen Canal and Dinas Bran Castle Circular Walk
A fresh and very cold morning with a cold biting breeze,and an early start,there is snow forecast....not a lot though,and off to Llangollen we go for a nice easy 5/6 mile walk along the canal and up to Dinas Bran Castle.Llangollen is a little quieter this time of year but in the summer sometimes you can not move for visitors coming in to view this fantastic little town with its full size steam railway sitting on the banks of The River Dee,and not forgetting the canals running through the town.The walk we did took in a small part of the canal tow-paths leading us up to the Castle.Llangollen is also home to The National Eisteddfod in July which is held at the Pavilion.There are plenty of places to eat and drink in town so if you fancy a break from what ever you are doing you will be spoilt for choice.

Not far from the Ponderosa Cafe and the Horseshoe Pass in North Wales.
We take a little look at the ruins of this once mighty castle and trek all the way to the top of it's steep climb.
Not much here now except the sheep and the stunning views in what was once the Kingdom of Powys.
We go for a little bonus footage, but that doesn't work out as expected...
