Nagasaki, Japan: A Unique Slope Elevator and Sights
This is the last Nagasaki video - I promise. One form of access to Glover Gardens Open Air Museum is via Japan's first Slope Elevator which is also known as the Sky Road; think of it as a funicular elevator.
The area around Glover Gardens is filled with steep little streets, shops selling souvenirs and Castella cakes (a pound cake) which was originally brought by the Portuguese and the oldest remaining Gothic-style wooden church in Japan - Oura Catholic Church. A fun area...

iFly Little Secrets of Nagasaki, Japan with a European touch
Japanese temples, green mountains and western architecture: welcome to Nagasaki. A city with a rich history with the Netherlands and Portugal through trade. After the disastrous atomic bomb in 1945 Nagasaki was rebuilt, remaining a port city to this day. Expat Richard de Boer takes you to the most beautiful places of his city, from its cultural treasures to the friendly inhabitants.
Oura Church - Nagasaki, Japan
Oura Church is a Roman Catholic church in Nagasaki, Japan. Built in 1864, Oura Church is said to be the oldest church in Japan. Oura Church was built in honor of the 26 martyrs who were crucified under the rule of Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1597.
Oura Church was designated as a National Treasure in 1933, making this the first Western-styled structure in Japan to receive this title.

Nagasaki - Sofukuji Temple, 26 Martyrs of Japan statues and Meganebashi
Day 15 - Sofukuji Temple, and Meganebashi
After the Peace Park, we decided to visit some of the temples which Nagasaki is famous for. Unfortunately we were running behind time, so Sofukuji Temple was the only one we managed to see before closing time. The temple itself had a strong chinese influence, as with many others in Nagasaki. The graves at the back however was the most memorial part of Nagasaki. I was not sure if it was because of the gloomy weather, but there was a mysterious atmosphere when walking among the grave stones.
After visiting the temple, we wanted to go to the JR Nagasaki station to have dinner. While there, we decided to make a quick detour to the 26 Martyrs of Japan statue to have a look. The nearby church was the only church we visited in the whole trip to Japan.
When we returned to our accommodation, we did our laundry at a nearby store. We decided to kill some time by going to the nearby Meganebashi bridge (literally Spectacles Bridge). It is given that nickname as the reflection of the bridge in the water makes it look like Spectacles...I'll leave your imagine to run wild on this.

Japan 2018 - Spring Trip to NAGASAKI

HIROSHIMA MEMORIAL PEACE PARK & MUSEUM (広島) ????????

The Sakuradamon Incident was the assassination of Japanese Chief Minister (Tairō) Ii Naosuke (1815–1860) on 24 March 1860 by rōnin samurai of the Mito Domain, outside the Sakurada Gate of Edo Castle, because he signing the 1858 Treaty of Amity and Commerce with the United States Consul Townsend Harris and, soon afterwards, with similar treaties (1859), the ports of Nagasaki, Hakodate and Yokohama was open to foreign traders as a consequence of the Treaties.
Ii was also criticized for reinforcing the authority of the shogunate against regional daimyos through the Ansei Purge.Naosuke made strong enemies in the dispute for the succession of Shogun Tokugawa Iesada, and because he forced retirement on his opponents, specifically the retainers of Mito, Hizen, Owari, Tosa, Satsuma and Uwajima.
(from Tobu ga gotoku, 1990)
