L'imponente Castello di Ivrea, situato nella parte alta della città è chiamato da Giosuè Carducci castello “dalle rossi torri”.
Il poderoso edificio - a pianta quadrata con vasto cortile e rafforzata agli angoli da slanciate torri cilindriche, di cui la maggiore fu gravemente danneggiata nel 1676 da un fulmine - fu costruito nel 1358 su committenza di Amedeo VI di Savoia per scopi difensivi.
Il complesso in cui fu inserito comprendeva le sedi principi del potere politico e religioso di stampo medioevale: Il Comune, il Capitolo vescovile e la Chiesa.
Sensibilmente modificato negli anni successivi, dal 1750 al 1970 l’intera struttura è stata usata come carcere ed è stata completamente spogliata di tutti i preziosi arredi interni.
Oggi il castello appartiene al Demanio ed è affidato al Comune di Ivrea che, a sua volta, è supportato dall’Associazione “Castello di Ivrea”, fondata nel 1994.

Ivrea (Ĕpŏrĕdĭa in latino, Ivréa in piemontese, Ivreja in dialetto canavesano) è un comune italiano di 23.658 abitanti (detti eporediesi) nella Città metropolitana di Torino in Piemonte. Per ragioni storiche e demografiche viene considerata il capoluogo del Canavese .Ivrea si trova ad una latitudine 45° 27' 44 Nord e longitudine 7° 52' 29 Est, con un'altitudine di 267 m s.l.m.
Bagnata dal fiume Dora Baltea, un affluente del Po, è collocata in un'area formatasi da un grande ghiacciaio del Pleistocene, il quale trasportò nel tempo numerosi detriti che andarono a formare una serie di rilievi morenici, tra cui la cosiddetta Serra Morenica, considerata la collina più lunga, massiccia e dritta d'Europa[5], circa 25 km, e che separa il Canavese settentrionale dal Biellese. La particolare disposizione delle strutture moreniche infatti, tende a formare un vero e proprio anfiteatro geologico, nel quale Ivrea è collocata al centro.
In seguito al ritiro dell'ultima glaciazione (9700 a.C. circa), la zona si arricchì di numerosi laghi morenici, che ancor oggi circondano la città.
Essi sono principalmente cinque, il Lago Sirio, il Lago San Michele (verso Chiaverano), il Lago Pistono a Montalto Dora, il Lago Nero (tra Montalto Dora e Borgofranco) e il Lago di Campagna a Cascinette. Poco più lontano si trovano anche il Lago di Viverone (al confine con la Provincia di Biella) e il Lago di Candia (nel basso Canavese), oltre ad altri vari piccoli specchi d'acqua sparsi.
Strategico crocevia viario già in tempi remoti, ad ovest di Ivrea è possibile raggiungere la Valchiusella, mentre a nord la regione Val d'Aosta. A nord-est, nonostante la vicinanza con Biella (20 km in linea d'aria, 35 km su strada), Ivrea fa ancora parte della provincia di Torino, a circa 57 km dal capoluogo di regione.
Il centro storico di Ivrea si inerpica su una collina che porta al Castello sabaudo ed al Duomo, mentre la parte moderna si estende in piano, occupando entrambe le sponde della Dora Baltea ed i territori circostanti.
Verso sud, si accede invece al Canavese, verso Torino. Nel 1468, per volere di Jolanda di Francia, venne costruito il cosiddetto Naviglio di Ivrea, un canale irriguo destinato a rifornire di acqua le risaie del vercellese e che, essendo in origine navigabile, permetteva il collegamento tra Ivrea e Vercelli.canavese

Ivrea,(in latino Eporedia,abitanti Eporediesi) non e' solo la citta' legata al nome della Olivetti,ma una bellissima localita' situata lungo l'antico percorso della Via Francigena e della Via Romea che conducevano i pellegrini del nord Europa a Roma. Attraversata dalla Dora Baltea,che dalle pendici del Monte Bianco confluisce dolcemente nel Po,Ivrea gode di bellezze naturali uniche,come l’Anfiteatro Morenico,che è un rilievo di origine glaciale creato dal trasporto di sedimenti nel bacino della Dora Baltea.Ivrea,capoluogo del Canavese e' circondata da numerosi laghi morenici ed il suo centro storico si inerpica sulla collina che porta al castello sabaudo dalle rossi torri e al duomo,mentre la parte moderna si estende in piano occupando entrambe le sponde della Dora Baltea.Da un sondaggio di Skyscanner e' stata giudicata tra le 20 citta' piu' belle italiane attraversate dal fiume.Canoa, equitazione, mountain bike e lunghe passeggiate sono solo alcune delle mille attività all’aria aperta praticabili in questi luoghi bellissimi, tra paesaggi mozzafiato e monumenti storici.Tra gli eventi, lo storico Carnevale, con la battaglia delle arance.Strategico crocevia viario,ad ovest di Ivrea è possibile raggiungere la Valchiusella,mentre a nord la regione Val d'Aosta. DRONE in Action al castello di Ivrea
La costruzione iniziò nel 1358 per volere di Amedeo VI di Savoia, detto il Conte Verde con incarico affidato all'architetto Ambrogio Cognon; si concluse tra il 1393 e 1395 impegnando una grande quantità di manodopera: si ritiene che in certe giornate vi lavorassero più di mille persone (si consideri che a quei tempi Ivrea aveva circa 3500 abitanti) con maestranze qualificate provenienti da Vercelli, Milano e Ginevra[1]. Con la scelta del sito Amedeo VI volle che il castello si ergesse a fianco delle sedi principali del potere politico e religioso medioevale: il Palazzo Vescovile ed il Comune (Palazzo della Credenza). Per far posto al nuovo edificio fu necessario abbattere diverse case e le mura della città verso nord.
Situato in posizione strategica dalla quale è possibile dominare la strada che conduce in Val d'Aosta, il castello fu costruito soprattutto con funzione difensive. Il castello fu concepito come costruzione massiccia a pianta quadrangolare, con torri cilindriche che si innalzano direttamente dal terreno; i locali e le stanze del castello si sviluppano su tre maniche, alte verosimilmente tre piani, che si affacciano sul cortile interno. L'accesso avviene attraverso un'antiporta ed un successivo ponte levatoio sospeso sopra un fossato. Lungo il perimetro delle mura con merlatura a coda di rondine corre il camminamento di ronda, sorretto da beccatelli aventi scopo difensivo. Nel cortile si notano ancora il pozzo ed la ghiacciaia (diametro di 6 m. e profondità di 4m).

l duomo di Ivrea, dedicato a Santa Maria Assunta, si erge su di un'altura, nella parte vecchia della città, a due passi dal Castello dalle rosse torri; la sua storia più che millenaria è testimoniata dalle parti conservatesi delle sue strutture romaniche e dalla serie di interventi successivi che ne ha mutato la fisionomia adeguandola via via ai gusti estetici emergenti, del barocco e del neoclassicismo.Il reperimento di cospicui resti di costruzioni romane rimpiegati nelle parti più antiche della chiesa o rinvenuti durante gli scavi ottocenteschi per l'edificazione della nuova facciata, fanno ritenere che sopra l'altura sulla quale oggi si erge il duomo, fosse già presente, fin dal I secolo a.C., un tempio romano in asse con il sottostante teatro (di cui sono ancora visibili alcune tracce). Tale tempio fu poi trasformato in chiesa cristiana tra la fine del IV e l'inizio del V secolo, quando venne istituita la diocesi di Ivrea, rendendola autonoma da quella di Vercelli[1]. Questa prima chiesa presentava una pianta basilicale a tre navate con due absidi contrapposte, secondo un modello piuttosto diffuso nelle chiese paleocristiane. A fianco della chiesa, a sud-est, trovava posto il battistero, oggi scomparso.

Iniciamos nossa jornada contemplando o Rio Dora, que passa pela cidade com muita força, depois uma agradável caminhada pelo seu centro histórico, que pouco a pouco se revela um berço histórico e cultural. Pelos seus feitos industriais com a família Olivetti, a cidade foi recém promovida a patrimônio mundial da Unesco. Mais uma para a conta da Itália, líder absoluta na lista mundial.

Il Castello, affacciato sull'ampia pianura del Canavese e immerso in un immenso parco romantico, sorge su una collina antistante la lunga barriera morenica della Serra di Ivrea.
Abitato dai conti Valperga per dieci secoli, narra la storia piemontese ed italiana attraverso le sue numerose stanze monumentali, come i saloni affrescati e riccamente arredati tra Seicento e Settecento, le camere per gli ambasciatori, gli appartati salotti e gli appartamenti di Madama Reale.
Tra le sale più affascinanti vi é il salone da ballo, con le ampie finestre, che creano una perfetta armonia tra il panorama esterno e gli interni affrescati. Non meno interessante é la ricca collezione di carrozze del XVIII e XIX secolo, per la maggior parte della famiglia Valperga, conservata nel Palazzo delle Carrozze.
Al pari del Castello, anche il parco ha subito numerosi mutamenti nel corso dei secoli. L'attuale configurazione deriva dalla sistemazione del parco secondo il modello all'inglese risalente alla prima metà dell'Ottocento, che portò alla realizzazione della strada dei 22 giri, straordinario percorso panoramico.
Il Castello comprende anche le scuderie settecentesche e il palazzo delle carrozze, contenuti nel cosiddetto Palazzo, un edificio a se stante alla base dell'entrata principale della residenza.
Le dodici carrozze, per lo più ottocentesche, comprendono tutte le tipologie del tempo, il coupé e il vis-à-vis, la carrozza di gala, il carrozzino per bambini con gli accessori e i preziosi tessuti di rivestimento. Sono presenti i nomi dei più famosi costruttori di carrozze italiani come i Goggia, Cesare Sala e Giuseppe Panigoni di Torino.

BATTLE OF THE ORANGES (source Wikipedia):
The festival's origins are somewhat unclear. A popular account has it that it commemorates the city's defiance against the city's tyrant, who is either a member of the Ranieri family or a conflation of the 12th-century Ranieri di Biandrate and the 13th-century Marquis William VII of Montferrat.
Every year the citizens remember their liberation with the Battle of the Oranges, where teams of aranceri (orange handlers) on foot throw oranges (representing old weapons and stones) against aranceri riding in carts (representing the tyrant's ranks). During the 19th-century French occupation of Italy, the Carnival of Ivrea was modified to add representatives of the French army. Another adaptation of the story has the oranges used to symbolize the removed testicles of the tyrant.
The core celebration is based on a locally famous Battle of the Oranges that involves some thousands of townspeople, divided into nine combat teams, who throw oranges at each other – with considerable violence – during the traditional carnival days: Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. The carnival takes place in February.
Originally beans were thrown, then apples. Later, in the 19th century, oranges came to represent the stones thrown at the king's castle in order to demolish it. The origin of the tradition of throwing oranges is not well understood, particularly as oranges do not grow in the foothills of the Italian Alps and must be imported from Sicily.
There are a handful of routes that are allowed for spectators. The first is to hide behind the nets that are draped around the buildings, this is by far the safest choice and is highly recommended for those planning to attend with children. For the more adventurous spectator you can simply stay on the battlefield throughout the whole battle. This choice has to be made with certain considerations the biggest of which rogue oranges that have missed their targets and are on a trajectory right towards the middle of the battle where the spectators are located. Despite what one may expect the armored palace guards are not the ones that you have to be wary of when spectating, but the throwers on the other side of the chariots who are attempting to hit the guards. Every spectator is encouraged to purchase and wear, at all times, the Berretto Frigio/Phrygian Cap/red hat for protection. Wearing the hat signifies that you are part of the revolutionaries and will protect you from getting oranges directly thrown at you; however, as previously mentioned, if you are in the battlefield the hazard of getting hit by oranges is still a very real and essentially guaranteed occurrence. Spectators are not allowed to throw oranges as long as they are wearing their Berretto Frigio.
