Places to see in ( Olbia - Italy ) Pozzo Sacro Sa Testa
The sacred well of Sa Testa , is an archaeological monument located in the municipality of Olbia , in Sardinia . It is located near the industrial port along the road that leads from Olbia to the beach of Pittulongu. The sacred well of Sa Testa was discovered in the thirties along the coastal road from Olbia to Golfo Aranci , from shepherds in search of water. The excavation was carried out by Francesco Soldati in 1938 . The building was restored by Ercole Contu in 1969. The monument, built in blocks of granite and shale, is located in a slightly sloping saddle between low hills, oriented in an NNO-SSE axis. It has a total length of 17,47 m. Sa Testa includes a circular courtyard, a trapezoidal entrance, a staircase and a tholos , which contains the source.
Access is on the north side through four descending steps. The inner courtyard, 8.30 × 7.41 m wide was probably destined for rituals. It is bordered by a low circular temenos , whose residual height is 30 cm. The wall thickness of the complex is 94 cm. It is equipped with a drainage channel. From the courtyard leads to a staircase of 17 steps, whose width narrows progressively, which leads to the level of the source. The small trapezoidal environment measures 2.65 m in length, 2.62 in width and 1.87 m behind the front; it is also paved and crossed by a drainage channel
The source is covered for 5.25 by a tholos that narrows upwards and ends with a circular hole that originally communicated with a second tholos , at ground level, of which only a few rows of granite blocks remain. . Structural elements protect the good from the penetration of surface water. The fact that the second tholos has not arrived intact does not allow to affirm or deny that the sacred well of Sa Testa, as well as other sacred wells of the island, is astronomically associated with the minimum and maximum declination of the moon during its cycle of 18.6 years
The exact chronology of the monument is not detectable precisely because of its continued use until the Roman era. The dating of the oldest forms - still uncertain - seems to confirm their contemporaneity with the other examples of sacred wells found on the island ( Bronze Age , 1200-900 BC). The use of the structure at that time would be demonstrated by numerous fragments of a cup and some bronze objects . Among the latter there is a band bracelet, a small ring, a spiral needle and a small elsa gammata punch
The Phoenician-Punic period (850-238 BC) is testified by numerous fragments of cups, plates with black paint with decorations and figulina clay bricks . The discovery, in this layer, of a juniper wood statuette is important for its stylistic features, having recently been considered a xoanon depicting a greek-oriental kore datable between the end of the seventh and the middle of the sixth century BC. Of particular interest are three thymiateria , always attributable to this period.
