[ENG]
nside the Castle of San Giusto, the 16th-century Bastione Lalio houses the 'Lapidario Tergestino'. This collection includes more than 130 items, mainly inscriptions and sculptures, which illustrate the history of Roman 'Tergeste': its monuments from the Capitoline hill, the sacred buildings, the Theatre and the necropoles.
The first room houses some of the better-known monuments, including the inscriptions which were affixed near the city gates to celebrate the building of the city walls and towers, whose construction had been commissioned by Octavian in 33-32 BC; and the base of the equestrian monument dedicated by the plebs tergestinorum to Lucius Fabius Severus, an eminent local citizen who became a Roman senator and thus managed to pass some laws that were beneficial for his native city. Additional items comprise an architrave dedicated to admiral Clodius Quirinalis, the base of an equestrian monument to Valerius Festus and two pyramidal altar tops bearing the symbols of Jupiter, Minerva and Juno.
The second room displays imperial inscriptions honouring the interventions of emperors Adrian, Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius in the construction of public buildings in the city. The room also houses material from the ancient Roman Basilica, whose monumental archaeological remains can still be seen today in the square at the foot of the castle.
The large upper room houses sepulchral monuments. These are divided according to their place of origin and comprise altars, steles, cippi, urns and sarcophagi bearing the names of ancient local citizens. The room also includes a sector devoted to places of worship and deities, with dedications to Jupiter, Cybele, Silvanus, Bona Dea, Hercules and Minerva. The exhibition continues with material found during the excavation of the Roman Theatre. This consists of an exceptional series of statues, which used to decorate its scene. They include Venus, Bacchus, Apollo, Minerva, Hygieia and Aesculapius.
The Lapidario Tergestino's last room is dedicated to the mosaics which were found in a lavish seaside villa in Barcola, on the outskirts of the city. These mosaics can be dated to between the end of the 1st century BC and the middle of the 1st century AD; they are characterised by the elegant taste of their rich owners and their attempt to imitate the villas of Augustus, Tiberius and Nero.
A fragmented marble statue of an athlete stands in the middle of the room. This is a copy from the time of Nero of the original bronze statue created by eminent Greek sculptor Polyclitus in the 5th century BC, and was also found in the villa. This statue itself shows how richly decorated the building must have been.

From Wikipedia
The castle of San Giusto is a fortress - museum located on the hill of the same name in Trieste .
As a historic residence, it was restored in the 2000s and used as a civic museum by the Municipality of Trieste, to which the building has belonged since 1930 . On the Bastione Lalio was inaugurated on April 4, 2001 the Lapidario Tergestino consisting of inscriptions , sculptures , bas-reliefs and fragments of architecture from the Roman era .
It can only be visited in part: in particular, in addition to the lapidary, the Chapel , the Caprin Room, the large inner courtyard - the venue for summer events - and the stands, from which you can enjoy a wide view of the city below, are accessible.
The first historical data concerning the presence of a fortress on the hill date back only to the fifteenth century .
Frederick III of the Habsburgs , under whose rule the city was then, did not support the Triestines in the war against the Venetians, which was a clear sign for the citizens: if they had to defend themselves, they were masters of themselves, and they disliked the imperial authority. It was a step too bold that the emperor could not tolerate and punished the city in an exemplary way.
The fortress walls
The year 1469 remains in history as the year of the destruction of Trieste. After the Austrian assault on the city and after the massacres, the looting and the plague that followed, the inhabitants of Trieste also had to submit to the formal punishment, that of building a fortress for the winners at their own expense.
The castle was built on the Capitoline hill, on the ruins of the Venetian castle. It was a two-story building with an adjacent square tower . It was not a beautiful building, nothing artistic or interesting. It was just a solid military post.
In the early 16th century , when the city passed temporarily under Venetian rule, this first construction was extended with a high semi-circular wall. After the return of the Empire the work continued, but without hurry. First, between 1551 and 1561 , the bastion was added to the southeast, called Lalio from the name of its first designer. The northern part, already planned by the Venetians, was completed in 1595 , and the last bastion, the Pomis bastion, dates back to 1630 .
As can be seen from the projects that still survive in Ljubljana , in the 17th century the fortress was rebuilt globally which seemed too small and inadequate for the defense of the city. An extension of the building was planned to include the entire summit of the hill, which would have even led to the demolition of the cathedral.
The bases of a fourth bastion of the fortress were found, buried beyond the basilica, but it was never erected. After the French bombing of the city in 1702 , it became clear that a huge fortress on the San Giusto hill no longer made sense.
Only in 1930 did the Italian authorities identify the tourist opportunity of the site. The fortress was restored, became a castle, and acquired its present appearance.
Throughout its history this fortress, built explicitly for war purposes, was used by the military only twice. The first time, in 1813 , by Napoleon's troops who for two weeks tried to resist the siege of the Austrian, English and Neapolitan fleets . The second time the fortress served the German soldiers who in 1945 surrendered to the liberation troops.
Enter the fortress passing a drawbridge of small proportions that was not the original medieval entrance, still clearly visible on the left. The castle is full of historical inscriptions and commemorative tombstones and at the entrance one can see among the military banners , the coats of arms of the patrician families of the city.
On the left there is a corridor leading to the ancient shooting positions, while the right corridor leads to the weapons museum and to the gatehouse.
A staircase leads to the panoramic terrace, from where one passes in the enormous courtyard, designed for piazza d'armi, and today the site of many cultural and entertainment events . From the margins of the courtyard you can climb the stands from where you can enjoy a spectacular view of those parts of the city that you couldn't see from the terrace.
Under the castle there are many tunnels and various environments that are not open to the public, as some are still being explored. One of the cellars, which can also be reached from the outside, has been home to the elegant high-class municipal restaurant for decades.
