The Svevo cello of Trani was built in 1233 , under the reign of Frederick II of Swabia. The construction was begun in 1233 and the fortification works were completed in 1249 , according to the project of Filippo Cinardo , count of Acquaviva and Conversano , great constable and military engineer of the emperor, and by Stefano di Romoaldo Carabarese, with fortifications in front of and around the castle.
The castle was built on a rocky bank located in the center of the Trani bay, in a shallow area, which protected it from possible attacks by the sea. On the same site a modest tower ( X - XI century) had been built , whose remains have been found under the entrance of the current castle. Under the Angevin rule , additions and modifications were made by the French military architect Pierre d'Angicourt . In 1268 the marriage between Charles I of Anjou and Margaret of Burgundy was held in the castle and in 1271 those of the second son of Charles, Philip ( 1254 - 1277 ), with Isabelle de Villehardouin ( 1263 - 1312 ), princess of Achaia .
Passed under the Spanish dominion , under Carlo V , in 1533 , it underwent considerable transformations, to adapt it to the new defensive needs that arose following the invention of gunpowder. The intervention foresaw the strengthening of the southern side, towards the mainland, and the construction of two bastions starting from two of the angular towers: quadrangular to the north-east and spear-shaped to the south-west. In the period between 1586 and 1677 it was the seat of the royal court for the province of the Land of Bari (Sacred Royal Hearing).
Starting from 1832 it underwent a series of works for the transformation in the central provincial prison, opened in 1844; maintained this function until 1974 and in 1976 it was handed over to the Superintendency for environmental and artistic heritage of Puglia. It was subsequently subjected to restoration work starting in 1979 and was opened to the public on 5 June 1998 .

Places to see in ( Trani - Italy )
Places to see in ( Trani - Italy )
Known as the 'Pearl of Puglia', beautiful Trani has a sophisticated feel, particularly in summer when well-heeled visitors pack the array of marina-side bars. The marina is the place to promenade and watch the white yachts and fishing boats in the harbour, while the historic centre, with its medieval churches, glossy limestone streets, historic Jewish quarter and faded yet charming palazzi is an enchanting area to explore. But it's the cathedral, pale against the deep-blue sea, that is the town's most arresting sight.
The town dates to about 1000 AD and became an important port city. Frederick II fortified it with a castle and protective walls, and it had a large, active Jewish population in the Middle Ages, at one time boasting four synagogues. Today, two remain; one, Scola Nova, dates to about 1240 has been reopened and functions as an active synagogue. The other, Scola Grande, had been converted to the church of St. Anna when the Jews were expelled, but now that church is home to the Diocesan Museum, which offers a Jewish art section. Trani had a bustling giudeca district, a Jewish neighborhood (not to be confused with a Jewish ghetto, which was a closed section.) Traces of the once-rich culture can be seen in those sights, as well as places that bear names, like Piazza del Sinagoga and Via Giudeca.
The cathedral is the focal point and primary landmark of Trani, a pink-hued stone structure that sits right on the waterfront. It is built in a distinct Pugliese version of Romanesque style, with intricately-carved portals, doors and window settings. Don't miss the lower level, which is surprisingly more ornately decorated than the main sanctuary. The town's park, called Villa Comunale, is a nice green space with a promenade along the sea and a beautiful view of the cathedral from the quay (called il Fortino).
Trani is still an active port, with pleasure boats and a fishing fleet -which means super-fresh seafood on the tables! Don't miss a chance to sample the delicacies that Puglia is famous for. It has about 56,000 residents, so there is plenty of cafes and restaurants and shops to enjoy, too. Trani is north of Bari and near the fascinating castle built by Frederick II, Castel del Monte.
Near the cathedral is the church museum, the Museo Diocesano, which exhibits a collection of sculpture and archaeological finds from Trani's churches. Trani's defensive fortress, the Castello Svevo, is on the shore just beyond the cathedral. It dates to 1249 and is one of the many castles built in southern Italy by the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II, one of the area's most interesting historical figures. For a long period (until the 1970s) the building was used as a prison; nowadays it's open as a tourist attraction, although there isn't that much to see. There is an admission charge, although tickets are reduced for 18-25s and free to under-18s and over-65s. The castle houses occasional exhibitions and special events.
On the low headland behind the cathedral is the oldest part of Trani's historic centre. Exploring the lanes here, the visitors comes across picturesque corners and interesting sights like the roadside bas-reliefs pictured on the left. The most famed of Trani's historic dwellings is the fifteenth-century Palazzo Caccetta on Via Ognissanti, which belongs to the council. Nearby is a twelfth-century church built by the Knights Templar, the Chiesa di Ognissanti. Trani was on a route used by crusaders heading to and from the Holy Land, and there was a hospital here for the sick and wounded. You can see the exterior of the church from the harbourside (the curved apse) or from the lane the other side of the building; unfortunately it is not usually open to the public.
Inland towards the railway station the streets are more modern but despite the traffic which runs along them, there is still a rather old-worldly air to the wide pavements and shops. It's a promenading kind of town, and some of the lanes and squares probably haven't changed since the nineteenth century. In one mellow piazza a sign advertises: Trani: Città Slow; in the midday lull the description couldn't have been more apt: other than a bird singing we were the only life.

Trani, Puglia, Italy
Video of the town of Trani which is located in the Puglia region of Italy.Trani has lost its old city walls and bastions, but the 13th-century fort has been extensively restored as a museum and performance venue and is open to the public. Some of the streets in and around the Ghetto area remain much as they were in the medieval period, and many of the houses display more or less of Norman decoration.
The main church is the Trani Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Nicholas the Pilgrim, a Greek who died in Trani in 1094 while on his way on pilgrimage to Rome, and some years later canonized by Urban II. It lies on a raised open site near the sea, and was consecrated, before its completion, in 1143. It is a basilica with three apses, built in the characteristic white local limestone. It has also a large crypt and a lofty tower, the latter erected in 1230-1239 by the architect whose name appears on the ambo in the cathedral of Bitonto, Nicolaus Sacerdos. It has an arch under it, being supported partly on the side wall of the church, and partly on a massive pillar. The arches of the Romanesque portal are beautifully ornamented, in a manner suggestive of Arab influence; the bronze doors, executed by Barisanus of Trani in 1175, rank among the best of their period in Southern Italy. The capitals of the pillars in the crypt are fine examples of the Romanesque. The interior of the cathedral has been widely modernized, but the crypt remains similar to the origins and was renowned repository of relics, among which indicates the body of the martyr St. Febronia of Nisibis that you can still Today enjoy a precious reliquary of the eighteenth century and an oval painting depicting the Saint at the Diocesan Museum.
Near the harbor is the Gothic Palace of the Doges of Venice, which is now used as a seminary. The Church of Ognissanti which at one stage was the chapel of a Knights Templar hospital has a Romanesque relief of the Annunciation over the door. San Giacomo and San Francesco also have Romanesque façades; the latter, together with Sant'Andrea, have Byzantine domes

Trani Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral dedicated to Saint Nicholas the Pilgrim in Trani, Apulia, Italy. Formerly the seat of the archbishop of Trani, it is now that of the archbishop of Trani-Barletta-Bisceglie. It is a great example of Apulian Romanesque architecture. Construction began in 1099, over the earlier church of Santa Maria della Scala, going back to the 4th century. The relics of Saint Leucius were kept here until the 8th century, when they were translated to Brindisi. The new church was intended to house the relics of Saint Nicholas the Pilgrim (who died in Trani in 1094).
The cathedral was dedicated as soon as they were installed, without waiting for the building to be completed. The decisive stage of construction probably took place between about 1159 and 1186 under the leadership of Bishop Bertrando II, and the building was complete by about 1200, except for the bell tower.
It was built using the local stone of Trani, a typical building stone of the region: a calcareous tuff, obtained from the caves of the city, characterised by its colour, an extremely light pink, almost white. The cathedral is distinguished by its showy transept and by its use of the high pointed arch in the passage beneath the bell tower, which is unusual in Romanesque architecture.
